Coming back to adventure gaming after a veeeery long absence, I'm looking for a bit of help.

Is it still possible to get the old-fashioned "text-only" games that will run under XP? If so, any recommended suppliers? (Ideally that will ship to the UK)

(I'm aware that I can get various emulators for thing like the old Commodore and the Sinclair Spectrum and download a lot of free stuff for them, but it would be more nicer and more convenient to just fire them up like any other XP app - I've used emulators in the past and some of them are a bit flakey. I could also use the DOSBOX, but again it's a question of where to get hold of the old DOS apps)

Thanks,

Rog

Actually, I was going to announce one yesterday and didn't think anyone would care. Let me find my info and I'll post it. It was a brand new one released yesterday.

EDIT: Here ya go!

Textfyre Releases: The Shadow in the Cathedral

A New Interactive Fiction Game

CHICAGO - November 16, 2009 - Today, Textfyre announces the general release of their second Interactive Fiction game, The Shadow in the Cathedral.

This is the first episode in the Klockwerk Series, designed by Ian Finley and Jon Ingold. Shadow represents an ambitious adventure set in an Edwardian world with Newtonian devices. Within the world of Klockwerk, you will be confronted by ornithopters, a Difference Engine, a tea machine, a perpetual motion machine, and the mysterious Shadow in Gray. Emily Short reviews Shadow on PlayThisThing.Com and says, "The Shadow in the Cathedral gave me seven or eight hours of solid play, and when I was done there were things I went back to try in different ways. There's some beautiful imagery."

Textfyre Interactive Fiction Games

Textfyre Interactive Fiction games are stories that play as a game. The player gets to decide how the story unfolds by entering natural language
commands. Textfyre has partnered with prominent Interactive Fiction authors Mike Gentry, Ian Finley, Jon Ingold, Paul O'Brian and Christopher Huang to create the best game designs and story-telling in any adventure on the market, without gratuitous sex or violence. These stories play well for middle-school aged students, as well as also for older children and adults.

Hi Urban Worrier, you may find this link of interest too:

Links to text AGs

I've tried one on my XP - I couldn't finish that particular one but as far as I know you don't need to download any other program to play a lot of them! smile

You're kidding? It's better than ever! It's called "Interactive Fiction" these days though. This link has an obscene amount of free text adventures to download:

If you own a Mac, you can download the best IF interpreter around:

And Gargoyle is a good choice for Windows:

Also, make sure to check out the annual IF Competition http://www.ifcomp.org/
There are always lots of excellent entries smile and you can participate in voting (or even writing your own!)
This years competition has ended, but you can still play all of them (and from previous years as well).

Thanks for the links, everyone - I'll check 'em all out!

I had a brief look at your link Ana and played the demo - like Rael said, things have certainly come on an awful lot since the last time I played seriously (mid-1980s) lol

Thanks again...
