Jen, did you click first on the Whitechapel area in the map (after you picked it up) and then the police station?

Have fun with this good game.

The police station is situated on the left side of the Whitechapel Street map, and is identified by a tiny round button - hover your cursor over the button and a label pops up.

Did you click on the board with strings, which is on the wall to the left of Holmes' worktable? That will take you into a close-up view of the board, and you should be able to select and use the documents then.

Holmes' worktable is at the corner of the room close to the window and yes - with microscope, etc...
So look left of that table on the wall as Rushes stated.
See a board with strings. Look close.
Then open your documents folder (try right click).

Okay, I got it. Now I just met Watson's friend in the hospital and I have the anatomy book. I need to do the heart puzzle but whenever I go to do it Watson says he's missing something. What is he missing?

Did you get the message from the trolley wheel?

Be sure to click on the blackboard with the drawing of the heart.

That message stated: The magnet is in the heart, use this board and erase it afterwards.

So you click on the board to verify that you read the board.
That drawing of the heart on the blackboard is a clue to help you when you follow the the message: The magnet is in the heart...

The cage with the tight mesh is on one of the cabinets to the left of the main door. You do need it to be able to secure the snake.

Did you select the two correct documents that will help you decode the message? Once selected, you'll see letters appear at the bottom of the screen, and you can begin the puzzle.

The message is in Roman Numerals, but the lower half of the numerals are missing to make things trickier.

Click on a letter on the red bar at the bottom and then click on the empty frame above the associated Roman numeral on the page.

I did select the 2 documents and they appear at the top of the codes. Also, what I see doesn't seem to be red but the same color as the desk. Is that it? I also don't have any letter appearing. I'm using the WT that MaGrRo put out to the letter. I don't know what I missed.

Jen,

I vaguely recall that another gamer has the same problem. It seems that her screen was too large.
It cut off the red part at the bottom when the 2 correct documents were selected.
See if selecting another screen resolution would work for you. It us under options- video at main menu.

Hi crc, welcome to GameBoomers.

Make sure to left-click on the footprints and spill stain while you're looking at them through the lens, so that Holmes will comment. Keep clicking & adjusting the position of the lens if Holmes doesn't comment straightaway.

Persevere with the measuring tape until Holmes says the shoe is a size 13. Left-click-hold and stretch the tape from the tip of the toe to the edge of the heel.

luck If you still have problems let us know.

Jen, did you manage to locate your folder with all your other game saves in it?

Once you've found that:

- Save the file e-mailed to you to your desktop.

- Make a note of the current last numbered save in your game folder, i.e. save_23.jpg

- Renumber the save file on your desktop to follow on from your current last save, i.e. save_24.jpg

- Place the renumbered file into your game folder along with all your other saves.

- Exit the folder, start up the game as usual and load the new save. You'll need to scroll back to the beginning of your saves to find the new one.

I thought my saved games were under the save choice in the main menu. I read what you wrote but I totally have no idea what this all means. My husband just says the saved game is in the picture of Watson. waa I'm really stupid. Is there an easier way to figure this out?

Yup, that's where your saves are when you're in-game. But when you want to place a save file that someone has sent to you into the game folder, then you have to access the folder on your hard drive.

Could we double-double-check the puzzle that you're having trouble with, to see if we can find out why you're not seeing the letters at the bottom of the screen?

Check that you have selected these two documents and that they appear onscreen as proof:

Document 1 - Plants and Spices
Document 2 - Animals

Both are pages from the Spartaca Encyclopaedia and have similar lettering.
Click on 'use this document as proof' at bottom of right page to select each document.

Then look to the bottom of the screen and see if the letters have appeared.

As mentioned in my original e-mail with the save, another member using Vista found their save folder here:

C:\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper

If you re-start the game you may only find yourself with the same problem when you reach the decoding puzzle again. Did you try all different screen resolutions? Did you try solving the puzzle again using the tips in my above post?

I just had a thought - make sure that your files and folders are showing, and not hidden.

To unhide all folders, here's the procedure which works for XP, hopefully is the same for Vista:

From Windows Explorer choose "Tools" from the menu, then "Folder Options" then click the middle tab "View". You may have to scroll down a bit, but look for "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and click the box.

Then look again for the save folder.

Try right-clicking the game shortcut on your desktop and choose "Launch as Administrator". See if that makes a difference. Also try the hidden folder tip in my last post.

Im having a problem with one of the puzzles, i need to choose letters to come up with an answer that Watson found at the hospital. this game is being run on Vista. I can't see any letters, I've right clicked the shortcut and chose "Run as Administrator" but the computer can't find the disc. I'm very bad at working out computer problems, so if anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it.

I think this is more of a Hints problem -- a matter of figuring out how to work the interface that lets you see the letters. I can't remember exactly how I did it when I played the game. I'll move this over to Hints.

Sorry for the trip around the forums.

Let's try working on making your resolution smaller - please play with the options to see if you can make the screen smaller.
Also best to replay that puzzle and be sure that you have selected the correct 2 documents. Verify by checking the tabs at top left page.

lol You weren't a pain. It's wonderful when a seemingly insolvable problem gets resolved eventually.

I haven't played this game in quite a while, but now I am and I'm trying to make the ellipse on the map but the compass isn't picking up for me. Is there a secret to pick it up that I don't know about?

Hi Jen,

Try using the wooden compass here rather than the metal one. The wooden one has a completely different shape. luck

You're not able to pick it up? Did Holmes ask you to draw the ellipsis yet? He will always confirm after each stage of the puzzle is completed correctly. What items are you able to pick up from bottom right? See if you are able to erase any of the connecting lines, or move any of the victim icons - if you can, then it is incorrectly placed.

He talked to me after I put the 2 lines on the map. I don't remember if he asked about the ellipsis. I have a hard time remembering things frown

No problem - Click on the question mark icon at top right of the map, that'll tell you what you need to do next. See if it mentions the ellipsis, or if it's still at an earlier stage of the puzzle. luck

The question mark just says to draw a line from Dutfields to Mitre's square and when I click on holmes, he says the same thing. What now?

Erase the line you currently have drawn connecting those two points, and carefully redraw it. Double check that you are connecting the correct areas - hover your cursor over each location to check that they are Dutfields Yard and Mitre Square. When the line is correctly drawn, Holmes will say so, then tell you what you have to do next.

You may need to click and drag the eraser down the drawn line to remove it. Simply clicking the eraser on the line might not be enough to do the job.

I'd suggest going back to a saved game before attempting the map puzzle, and replaying through. Hopefully that will unstick you. luck

I wrote the location in the mail for XP:

In XP the save folder is in: C:\Documents and Settings\computer's namer\Application Data\Games\sherlock holmes versus jack the ripper\save

As for other OS, you might need to do a search.

Jen, I'd suggest checking your settings to ensure that it shows hidden files & folders.

This is the procedure for XP, but hopefully it won't be too different for Vista:

Open your Documents folder. From the top toolbar, select "Tools".
Select "Folder Options", then "View".
You may then need to scroll down a little until you see "Hidden files and folders". Be sure that the box for "Show hidden files & folders" is checked.
Confirm and exit out.
Then try searching for the save folder again.

I decided to start all over again. I'm at the part where I am making a timeline with Long and Cardosh . I need to move Cardosh in his garden to a new time but it won't move. This is the second time this has happened. Why? What can I do?

Just to verify:

Do you have the testimonies of Long and Cadosch in documents?
If not, the paper might not have been pieced together completely.

Can you see the text at bottom right of the document page?

Also be sure that Holmes has actually prompted you to move Cadosch to his new timeslot. Everything needs to be moved in a precise order as instructed by Holmes, otherwise the problem of the type you are describing will occur. Double check if any other icon on the timeline will move.

Best to go back to a save game just before starting this puzzle and replay through, listening out each step of the way for Holmes' instructions. Leave as much room as you can around each of the icons you move on the timeline, so they don't become tangled up with one another. luck

Yes, but you can place them higher or lower on the bar so they are spaced out that way but still at their correct times. If you put them all on the same level then they overlap and it can be difficult to separate them when you need to.

Okay, I've started over but it's been quite a while so I've forgotten most of it. I'm at the point to determine the time of Annie Chapman't death and and have used the "use a proof' for some of the documents. Can someone tell me which ones are actually used "for proof" I have 2 that I don;t have. I hope you understand me

This is the "Select the proofs for analysis of the crime"?

In documents, select the Testimony of E. Long. Click the 'use this document as proof' at bottom of right page of the document.

In documents, select the Testimony of A. Cadosch. Click the 'use this document as proof' at bottom of right page of the document.

In dialogues, select the dialogues at the Police Station - Richardson's testimony. Click the 'use this document as proof' at bottom of right page.

Have fun.

I think the two you have left on the timeframe aren't related to documents or dialogues. If you have selected the correct 3 proofs as MaG listed above, you can now place the respective icons up on the timeline at the correct times. Once you've done that, you should then be able to complete the rest of the timeframe.

Do be sure that the icons you place on the top timeframe outline in green -- that is how you know you have placed them correctly.
