I checked the old posts, nothing about installing. I meet the specs on my vista computer and I can't get past fatal error on install. I tried it on my xp computer and it will install but not run... I can't find any patches. Any ideas? I turned off the anti virus, and the firewall. I am so tired of games that should run and don't. Thanks in advance.

Does it give you an error message when you try to install on the Vista computer?
Have you tried the usual things, like changing the Setup file to Win 2000 or Win XP compatibility mode before installing, disabling UAC, and making sure you don't have antivirus running in the background?

What video card do you have? (on both the XP and the Vista computers)

I get the error message as soon as you click install .Anti Virus off and the firewall too. And on the XP I just wanted to see if it was a bad disc. I know that machine falls short. But it would install just not run. I am in the process of upgrading my graphic card . That may be the problem. I have been holding off till I get a chance to download the new drivers. I only have dial up where I live. And want everthing in place before I do. 98MB is a large file. I will reserve any complaining until I do. I will let you know how I make out. Thanks for the reply. It's just time for the upgrade.

If you get the error as soon as you click "install," it sounds more like a Vista-related error than a video card error -- especially since it installs on the XP computer. What is the exact text of the error message? Have you tried right-clicking and running the Setup file on the game disc as Administrator?

Just Fatal Error has occurred. Yes to the part about the administrator. I also have a Vista lap top and the same error came up. I think the new card is a good idea ( I just needed an excuse lol) But I am open to sugestions to try and install. Thanx!

I haven't been able to find a patch. I tried to install in safe mode. And that means no Windows Installer running and can't install. The message I get is "Installation ended prematurely due to an error." The error you got sounds like the one I got on my XP computer, it would install but not launch. But I know that is an older graphic card and that is what I thought that issue was. Could it be the installer itself ? With the error that I get there isn't enough to go on to know where to look for help. There isn't even a "Read Me" on the disc.. I know that others are running this game on Vista, and there has to be a solution. Same thing happens on my Vista laptop. Help...

I agree with Dwn_force. That sounds like the error you'd get from your video card not being able to do what the game is asking it to.

Ugh! Not too informative is it.
If you look in the game folder, do you see any kind of log file? Maybe that would give a clue.

There's a fix for some types of errors in ***this thread***. But that seems to be a case where the game worked at first and then quit working.

Hi I will check the link. I went through every folder. Just mentions that run as Administrator is required. And that is not an issue. I tried to copy right to the drive and then install. No good. I can understand having to meet the requirements, but when they stick some stupid security or malware in the game it makes me crazy. hardwall I exceeded the specs for Trine, and when you open ( and are committed to the purchase) It gets into all the PhysX requirements. And it gave me fits! That is another one on the shelf. But I'm thinking that may have been the card, and that will be changed this week. The XP computer that Treasure Island will load on, is AGP, and I wasn't planning to throw any money that way with an upgrade. I don't even know what kind of upgrade would be available it's getting to be a dinosaur. But I like being able to run older software and games, so it's fine. Eventually someone has to stumble on a fix. I have faith in GameBoomers. I will be watching! Thanx.

See what happens when you get the new video card.
Usually PhysX can work in software without needing a separate PhysX card and all you have to do is install PhysX. But you may need at least a medium capability video card for it to work.

***This site*** is about a different game, but I wonder if it could be related to your Vista error. One of the posters says:

It sounds to me like there may be a window that's hidden somewhere that's actually waiting for your response to continue installation. I've dealt with games that asked me to continue, but I had to shift some menus and click around until I actually found the box. The flickering black box you mentioned leads me to believe that this may be the case. I'm not quite sure what to do, though. You could try pressing Alt+Tab. Also, you could try opening the task manager, right clicking on the installation program, and selecting either "Switch to" or "bring to front."

I wonder if there could be a window that isn't showing up because Vista is suppressing it.

That typically occurs when it's asking for permission - try running the game with administrator provides (Right click the shortcut, and select Run as Administrator.

As far as the PhysX, I had the drivers installed and it was recognized, but it wouldn't run. I really think the new card will resolve that issue with Trine. As far as the Treasure Island problem. The screen with install, load, exit will come up, and I accept the terms.. etc.. and that is when I get " install ended prematurely due to an error" and it closes. Like I said, it did it the same way on my lap top, and that too is Vista. The link wasn't the same issue, but I checked it out and thanks for the offering.

happydance I finally got Treasure Island to install and run on Vista! I disabled Defender just in case. Copied into documents. Opened file, opened program files, then opened dreamcatcher, found a file "ti application" opened and Bravo! the game opened. Whew, talk about the scenic route. And.... I have the new graphic card installed and Trine runs great. Just thought I'd let anyone that was interested have an update. And perhaps be of help . Who knows. wave

I'm not really sure if we had the same problem. I couldn't install at all. Just got the error message that I spoke of. So I by passed the installer by copying directly to my document folder. I kept opening and searching in folders until I got to the Dreamcatcher folder, in there was the ti application I xx clicked and the game ran. I have to go through the same six steps to access the game, but at least I can play it. What is the error message you get?
