I d/l WeGame and Taksi game recording software a few days ago from the site Inland pointed me to

I got WeGame installed on my host (the Asus Eee PC netbook with I'm going to play my Windows 95/98 games on) but it asks me to register online, and my netbook isn't connected to the internet.

So then I tried to install Taksi, but the installer says it cannot open the program - it asks me to either let windows find the appropriate program online, or "open this program with..."

What gives??

And if I want to use the software to record my gameplay for games that I'm playing in VPC/VMware Player under Win 98SE, do I have to have the software installed within the guest, or running in the host with the guest running in full screen mode?

As long as your connection is protected by a router, the router will protect you from unsolicited inbound connections and you might consider attaching your computer to the Internet for the time it takes to register.

Is it a zip file? You might need to unzip it. XP can unzip files, but Win 98 can't. However you can install 7-zip on Windows 98 and 7-zip is free.

I assume it wouldn't matter if the software is just recording what's being sent out your video card. But if it interfaces directly with the game, it would have to be installed on the same operating system as the game (i.e.- inside the Virtual Machine).

Yes, we have a router. I'll have to ask either our neighbor or my nephew to hook the netbook up to the net.

EDIT - on my netbook's host desktop, I see a balloon that says "wireless networks detected," and on the task bar on the right there's a little icon of a computer/monitor with a red "X" by it. I know nothing of how to set up my PC on the internet - isn't this difficult?

No, it's one of these "unknown" type of files - but I'll have check to make sure - as I didn't pay much attention to the file type.

EDIT - just checked the TaksiInstaller file type - it's a VDPROJ file.

If that's the case, will I have to register WeGame again on each guest even after I register it on the host? My guests aren't connected to the internet.

You will - remember they're isolated from the host (each in its own environment).

You won't be able to connect to the internet with a 9x guest under VMware (not easily anyway).

The red "X" is probably your (Ethernet) LAN connection - and will always display that way until you "hard wire" it to the internet (or disable it).

The balloon (wireless networks detected) message is prompting you to connect to a WLAN (router).

You need to connect to your router using its credentials (assuming it protected).

Oh brother! Isn't there any reliable, free gameplay recording software available that isn't as troublesome as WeGame?

Edit - have just d/l GameCam V2 and GC ExpressIt - will post back with the results.

I just connect an ethernet cable between the computer and the router.
***This kind of thing***.
One end goes in the router and the other end goes in the network port on the computer. The computer figures out the connection automatically. When you're done, just unplug it.

Wireless is more complicated and you sometimes have to adjust settings in both the router and the computer.

Ack! Try the .msi file here instead

Thanks, Jenny. But what about recording the earliest DirectX games and games that use Quick Time (from the earliest QT up to the latest)?

I'd like to be prepared so I won't have to end up with black screenshots as happened with several games when using XnView.

I d/l the Taksi that you found for me Jenny, and it installed with no problem. But the Game Cams (both the V2 and ExpressIt versions) tell me that I need a Div codec but I can still record games without it. Only I won't be able to play back the recorded video in order to capture still screenshots if I don't have the codec - help, please?

Do a google search and download the free divx movie player and it will install the codec you probably need. If that dosen't work just uninstall the divx player you installed.

Thanks, Cathy - I d/l the codecs, but where do I install them - directory/folder? Will GameCam find them automatically?

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Even after I got the codecs, including MS-CRAM, Taksi did not record the in-game movie from Theatre 1.

Neither did the 2 GameCams (V2 and ExpressIt).

I'm very frustrated with this.

Codec's are installed automatically, and should be found by whatever application requires them.

Are you running the game under the native OS, or under a VM? If you’re running them under a VM you'll need to install the application on the guest (not on your host).

I was trying to get Taksi to record the video in the free Theatre game I d/l (this is on my native XP host) and when this didn't work, I tried GameCam V2 and GameCam ExpressIt (again trying to record the video from Theatre on my host's native XP), but both of the GameCams did nothing at all.

I am running Theatre under the native OS (host XP) and running Taksi and the 2 GameCams under the native OS also.

How do I get Taksi and the GameCams to record the gameplay videos?

You're running the video capture programs from your XP host, and what Inland is saying is that you need to be running the capture programs from the guest OS inside the VM.

If you can't access the Internet from inside your VM, try burning the installers for those programs to a CDR. Then open your VM and access the CDR through the VM. You can run the installers from the CDR. (I'm assuming these are full installers that don't have to connect to the Internet)

Jenny - will do if (when) I ever have to record gameplay in a guest VM - but I was running Theatre (as well as both GameCams and Taksi) in the Win XP host.

Theatre is the free game that I d/l from the link Carla made in Discussions here at GB.
