Have you checked your drivers in the Device Manager?

If you are running XP, right click My Computer, click on Manage, click on Device Manager. If you see a yellow exclamation mark, it means you need to reinstall your sound card drivers.
Double-click the device that has the exclamation mark; right-click the specific device driver you want to update or change; click Update Driver to open the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the wizard instructions.
If you don't see one, post back here and maybe Jenny or Inland can help you.

It's not unheard of for your speakers to stop working too. Last time I had to work on a sound issue, nothing would work until I plugged in a spare set I had brought with me for trouble shooting. Do you have another set of speakers you could try? Or maybe some earbuds or headphones you could plug in to see if there is sound there?

first time i installed updates, there was also i for audigy. when i installed everything @ once,it "fatal error - drivers are stackked". so i restored, installed all the microsoft stuff... At that point did you have sound? In Device Manager do you see an option to revert to previous drivers for the sound card?

niteowl07, What do you see in device manager under "sound, video, and game controllers" ?
There should be an entry for your sound card, something like "Creative SB Audigy 2". If there, what does it say under properties?
You will also need to check the Creative Surround Mixer and EAX Console to make sure sound from specific sources are active.

thank you all for the help.
i will check what you have suggested, robert -
where do i find the surround mixer and eax console ? i know when i found computer sounds,it had been set to windows default, and was now listed "no sounds" - so i thought that was the problem - applied "windows default sounds" but apparently that wasn't it.
the sound icon on the bottom of my taskbar seems to shut itself off, with no help from me.
thank you also, donald. Try this - Display the volume control icon in the taskbar

i know when i found computer sounds,it had been set to windows default, and was now listed "no sounds" - so i thought that was the problem - applied "windows default sounds" but apparently that wasn't it. That control is only to tell Windows what sounds to play -- for example the crumpling-paper sound you get when you Empty the Recycle bin or the Windows Startup sound. It doesn't turn all sounds on or off. You should be able to find the surround mixer, etc. in your Start\Programs menu. Look for a "folder icon" for Creative or Soundblaster. But Donald and I seem to be in agreement that you'll probably have to get rid of those bad drivers and install the original drivers before you'll have success. The reason to uninstall them in Safe Mode is that if any are in use while booted to normal mode, they may not be uninstalled and may conflict with the drivers you're trying to install. In Safe Mode, this won't be a problem.

If this just occurred, you should try to restore the system to a state prior to installing the updates. How to restore Windows XP to a previous state Depending on your A/V Software, you may need to disable realtime protection while you do this.
