Have you checked your drivers in the Device Manager?

If you are running XP, right click My Computer, click on Manage, click on Device Manager. If you see a yellow exclamation mark, it means you need to reinstall your sound card drivers.

Double-click the device that has the exclamation mark; right-click the specific device driver you want to update or change; click Update Driver to open the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the wizard instructions.

If you don't see one, post back here and maybe Jenny or Inland can help you.

Have you checked to make sure your connection to your speakers is plugged in firmly?

Are you using onboard sound or do you have a separate video card?

It's not unheard of for your speakers to stop working too. Last time I had to work on a sound issue, nothing would work until I plugged in a spare set I had brought with me for trouble shooting. Do you have another set of speakers you could try? Or maybe some earbuds or headphones you could plug in to see if there is sound there?

At that point did you have sound?

In Device Manager do you see an option to revert to previous drivers for the sound card?

I guess you could try booting to safe mode, uninstalling the drivers, and then reinstalling the original drivers (if your sound card came with a driver CD).

niteowl07,
What do you see in device manager under
"sound, video, and game controllers" ?

There should be an entry for your sound card, something like "Creative SB Audigy 2". If there, what does it say under properties?

You will also need to check the Creative Surround Mixer and EAX Console to make sure sound from specific sources are active.

I have found that the drivers supplied by microsoft windows updates can cause alot of problems. When I see these driver updates in the update list I choose to hide them.
You can do this by choosing the update and then choosing to hide it.
You should be able to repair the problem by running the install disc that came with the sound card and reinstalling the softwarwe and drivers. You may have to go to add remove programs and uninstall the drivers and software for your sond card before you can reinstall. Make sure that you did not hit the mute button on your keyboard by mistake. If you pushed the mute button by mistake you should see a red mark through your speaker icon on the task bar.

thank you all for the help.

i will check what you have suggested, robert -

where do i find the surround mixer and eax console ? i know when i found computer sounds,it had been set to windows default, and was now listed "no sounds" - so i thought that was the problem - applied "windows default sounds" but apparently that wasn't it.

the sound icon on the bottom of my taskbar seems to shut itself off, with no help from me.

thank you also,donald.
