The first sentence will always contain a word that can be "anagrammed". The rest of the story will contain a hint for the required word. Try - "The bear looked in the cupboard. It was completely empty." Bear = Bare. The answer is then "bare."

-1.He took one last look at the ripples in the sand left by the retreating tide. Picking up the manuscript that he still needed to correct for publication, Tony sighed. It would be a long night. 4 letters

-2.He looked once again at the paper flier he had found announcing the gathering. He would definitely be at this meeting and this time he would be prepared. Ralph shouldered his gun and headed towards the grounds of the parliament. 5 letters

-3.She hated waiting for news of the battle and dread filled her as she tried to stay calm. To hear of his life ending would be more than she could bear. Kate shuddered. 5 letters

4.As usual no one would give him any credit, even though he had saved the little animal from the ravine. Peter knew if they were to believe his story this time, he would have to be straightforward and honest. 6 letters

-5.Isabel paused and turned her head to listen. It had been hours since she had managed to elude them but she was still cautious. Nothing. The forest was completely quiet. She rode on. 6 letters

-6.Ashley had spent hours in the old garret and her search was not without reward. Carefully she reached into the old box and unwrapped the delicate blue suspender. It would be perfect for one of her lace stockings. Now her wedding preparations were complete. 6 letters

-7.The candle flickered and Anne looked shaken as she tried to steady herself. The doctor glanced up and reached for the scalpel. The wound would have to be cut open and cleansed if the soldier stood any chance at all. 6 letters

8.Jack struggled to tread carefully as he made his way through the thick woods to the cabin. It was slippery and he stumbled. He needed to reach the dealer before the others or he would not be able to barter his grain for a good price. His foot slipped again and he cursed. It was beginning to rain. 5 letters

9. Pat stood back and tried to prise open the old trunk once more. He had very little time before the meeting and he needed the deeds. The sight of the top of the church steeple just beyond the window hardened his resolve. The papers would save the old stone chapel from the developers. The lid yielded just a little. 5 letters

10.Another unfair call like that and Jim knew an impure mix of anger and disbelief would need to be stifled. You're out! Jim shouldered his bat. He was not out and the crowd agreed. He glared at the referee as he headed from the field. 6 letters
