Yesterday I defragged my Win XP netbook. Here are some pics of the defragging -
Defragging for the 2nd time;
Defragging for the 3rd time,
and defragging for the 6th (and last time) that day

now here's my question: Why does a person have to defrag a PC several times before all files are consolidated - and why is there a thin blue line remaining in the white area following the 6th defragging session?

Why didn't that thin blue line become consolidated with the solid blue area on the left of my defrag window?

Err, maybe I shouldn't be asking this question here. Perhaps I should ask this at PC Guide.

The efficiency of defrag programs differ. Some take several passes to fully defrag while others can do it in one pass.
The WindowsXP degfrag program does not display the Master File Table. On your system the large white area probably is the MFT and the blue line on the right represents files that won't fit left of the MFT.

Defragging doesn't necessarily rewrite all your data from the first to the last track in a contiguous fashion - but it does do it's best to ensure that the individual files are contiguous (some are unmovable; others are too small to be considered).

I defrag all the drives on my WinXP about once a month - using a free programme "Auslogics Disk Defrag" that I downloaded from HERE

Someone at Gameboomers recommended it to me but I can't remeber who woozy

However, I like it and find it find it fast, efficient and easy to use !! thumbsup

The same as I use smile
It's really good - and has all the other windows features easy at hand too.

I use the windows defrag for years with no problems...Also make sure before you defrag use the disk cleanup first then defrag....Then restart your computer...

What you don't want to see is Red Lines..

Also Blues lines means you can't remove, move or defrag those files...

The only files that are Defrag is the Red Lines...
