Hi all,
I am eagerly anticipating Bracken Tor and Coven, and am wondering if there are any gems I can play in the meanwhile. Some of my favourites are:
All the Dark Falls
The Lost Crown
Barrow Hill
Rhiannon
Scratches
Darkness Within

I enjoy the feeling of isolation in the rural United Kingdom present in these games, as I like to visit country locales for a hobby

I enjoy the elements of nostalgia in those games, and the feel of the places, with the great atmosphere and creepy factor.

I also have a penchant for in-game museums. If a game has a museum, there is usually a high probability I will like it. Its cool to browse round the local exhibits and read the little guidebook and see the dioramas! lol

If you have any other suggestions for games that fit into this semi-niche genre of adventure games, I would be glad for the suggestions!

There are lots of games with museums or art galleries in them. Just off the top of my head -- Sherlock Holmes Nemesis (vs. Arsene Lupin), Memento Mori and Belief & Betrayal.

Thanks for suggestions. I've found Frogwares games a bit dull, and B+B doesn't behave on Windows 7 :-(

Perhaps I went a bit overboard with the museum thing, but its just something I really liked in the Dark Fall Lights Out & The Lost Crown.

Any more UK based games or creepy rural settings are my things!

More suggestions (and I know I'm probably missing a number of others that could be recommended):

Black Mirror, Dead Reefs, Darkness Within 1 (Loath Nolder), AGON Episode 1, the Broken Sword series and the Agatha Christie series.

I loved DW and can't wait for the new one!

Quickly of the top of my head (all are on BFG for $6.99 with playable demos to try) here are a few that really aren't "like" those you mentioned but have similarities...

I really liked the Delaware St. John Series. Big Fish has two, The Curse of Midnight Manor and The Town with No Name . All three were very isolated and creepy with interesting old places to explore.

Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None had great ambiance with nostalgia in an isolated English country side. I liked this one as well.

Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand has a museum with puzzles featuring the exhibits. I remember it was one of the titles I liked because of that aspect. Not really isolated or creepy however...

And Voyage was set on the moon, but I loved the SteamPunk aspect and the puzzles were challenging.

Black Mirror was a tad infuriating for me (voice acting, hotspots, and puzzles) but I liked it in theory. It's isolated English countryside in any event. It's not on BFG but you can Google the demo.

I'm sure there are a few more I can't think of right now...

I liked Black Mirror too, once you got into it(it does take patience but is SO rewarding!)..Have you played Myst and the 2nd in series Riven? They are great puzzle and story games and Riven Wonderful graphics and sound (GOG has them now for download and are supposed to run on xp/vista--but i can't remember if on win7)..Also if you like a bit of isolation and puzzling...Rhem, and all in its series (Rhem, Rhem2,Rhem3, and the 4th in the works)..for me..the puzzles (especially in 2..have but not played 3 yet)are not easy..so i sure treasure the walkthroughs available here!!! But they are really good games. I find the Frogwares, Nancy Drew games tedious. have gotten a couple of the Frogwares and not finished...ditto with the ND. But..everyone has their own likes! Schizm was very interesting(there was also a Schizm 2..it was also named something else but forget what..have not played it yet..have it though. just got around to playin the first several months ago(on my old xp that is still going!)). I really enjoy a good creepy game but also enjoy a game that has good exploration/puzzle and story. I know as soon as i post there'll be a dozen more i should've listed but i bet other 'boomers will!

I really enjoyed "Nibiru" although it probably wasn't as creepy as some already mentioned grin

Hehe, forgot to list Black Mirror, even though I am playing it at the moment! I'll have to take a look at Dead Reefs, and the Delaware games. I've played ATTWN.
I've played all the Myst games. Beautiful, but I hated the puzzles. Too abstract.
And Broken Sword is fab. I remember being about 5 and gazing at the box for that game for hours. Finally got to play it when I was about 12, ANC it has been burned into my memory since then. It's great that it was there years before The DaVinci Code craze by several years. A testament to Charles Cecil's writing.
