The following clues form a word chain. The last three letters of one word form the first three letters of the next word, and the list wraps round from the last word to the first. Mostly straightforward, but there may be one or two hyphenated ones in there, and remember it was compiled by a Brit. Plenty there, so feel free to grab a couple smile

-17. Remark made to open or redirect a conversation.
-18. Mixture of hydrocarbons, a constituent of asphalt and tar
-19. Crystalline terpenoid alcohol, 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanol
-20. Firearm container
-21. Edible turtle
-22. Highest point
-23. Butcher’s tool
-24. Product of atmospheric corrosion, especially on copper
-25. Laughable, ludicrous
-26. Labour-saving kitchen device
-27. Dense inner layer of the skin

-29. Plus, minus, square root etc
