Doris, one of our church members and her 13 year old daughter Ann were involved in a car accident yesterday - struck by another vehicle on the drivers side of their car. Daughter has fractured pelvis and various other injuries and will have surgery tomorrow to put a pin in her hip. Mother (driving) is more serious, tear in her Aorta and other serious injuries. Both medivac'ed to different hospitals - husband managing the back and forth between locations as needed. More family to arrive in 2 days. Please pray for this family, that Ann comes thru her surgery and injuries well, and that mom gets good medical help and recovers well also. Thank you all for your moral support for this family.

Annie came thru her surgery quite well - however her mother Doris is not doing well, according to our church office Secretary "Doris is not responding to her treatments" - I do not know what "treatments" she is receiving since I do not know all the details of all her injuries. Update on Doris as of yesterday...they inserted a stent into the Aorta to fix the tear and it is doing it's job (did this after her admittance to the hospital). They have her on breathing equipment and she has progressed to only needing it 50% which is a good sign. According to John (husband) they plan next to see if she will respond to a command - like "Doris, move two fingers" and if she does that too is a good sign. Up to yesterday she was allowed no visitors, no stimulation of any kind, there was bleeding in the brain, and the trauma of the accident undoubtedly bounced her around so they are concerned about how much brain damage took place - we pray for the best. UPDATE as of Saturday night = Annie was released from hospital and sent home, on crutches. Has been placed in her friends house to be taken care of for a while. Doris' condition is showing some improvements...they have a drain to the brain which has now been clamped off and is on 'standby' if needed. She has moved slightly the fingers on her badly damaged left arm. She kept her eyes open for about almost an hour in the afternnon, husband was singing and talking with her. She is much more alert but confused, quite naturally. She is now on 40% vent support. She should be off the ventilator soon. Her chest drains have also been clamped. They do not know if she will be able to speak much less sing again, more on this later. (Sings, plays guitar, flute and other instruments as well - has always reminded me of Mary from Peter, Paul and Mary group from the 50's). Doctors tell John they are so pleased she is alive as she came so close to not being so.
All your prayers have helped bring her to this point and continued prayers are so much appreciated by Doris' family and friends and our church...thank you all so much

Update from last night/early this AM = Doris is much more awake/alert, responding to John's presence, squeezed his hand and nod (slight) of her head in answer to yes/no questions, eyes open and focusing more....will hopefully be off ventilator soon. Very good news indeed, her Guardian Angel is hard at work for her. Thanks all. More when I hear it.

Doris is now off the ventilator. Not talking yet. She will remain in ICU and needs surgery to fix her shattered left arm and until the drains are removed when her brain stops producing excess fluid. Update yesterday = Doris can speak understandable words, on Thursday she was reminded about her daughter visiting her and said "I remember". Arm surgery was Monday, at least 3 breaks fixed, doing OK. Was put back on ventilator (Friday or Sat) because she started having trouble breathing again. Brain drain is still draining. Her progress to full recovery is going to be a very slow process. Thanks for good prayers.

Betty Lou, I'm just seeing your post for the first time. So sorry to read about Doris and her daughter, what a terrible thing to happen to them. I'm glad that things are improving for them and will add my prayers to the rest for their recovery.

Update - saw Annie in church last Sunday and she was walking (no,running) still with crutches. She was also in attendance with her dad at our Seder (Passover) Supper at church Thursday evening and no more crutches. She has returned to school and is pushing to catch up on her missed school work. Mom (Doris) is again off the ventilator but struggling with breathing, improvement is slow and understandably expected. Slow healing. Our church members have been asked to pick a day of the week for providing a dinner meal for John and Annie and I chose Fridays, will be doing this for the whole month of April. Don't know how much longer we will have to do this, but we have good people who support and help each other when needed, Praise The Lord. Thanks for your prayers

Annie has returned to school and is getting caught up with missed lessons. Church people are providing dinner meals for John and Annie. Doris is once again off ventilator, ragged, raspy breathing; arm cast is off already (a good sign?); still in ICU but can now receive visitors of friends as well as family; sitting up in a chair twice a day (with assistance naturally); not talking but early in day more alert and animated; if tired or sleepy mumbles some. It would seem she is slowly on the mend and it is going to take a very long time. Thanks for all your prayers and concern. I will post about once a week or so.

Update (hospital web page was down for a couple of days about the time Doris had another setback)= last week she had an infection, high fever and Friday was bad but by Sunday temp lowered. Doctors/specialists have determined infection is connected to the stent inserted in Aorta (prophylatic) and includes the carotid artery.....surgery was performed yesterday (Monday) afternoon to replace with 'tissue' (not sure what that means) and she is "holding her own" at that point - not sure how she did during last night. Prayers needed to help her through this 'bump in the road'. It's been 5 weeks plus now since the accident. Annie is doing very well, no crutches needed and she has lots of energy....thanks for all your support

today's update on Doris = she was moved this past week (4 times) from trauma ICU to a regular room and will be moved again to another hospital (downtown) to start her theraphy. Still has trach because of her breathing problems but mainly because she is still unable to cough and fluids need to be suctioned from her lungs - this to keep her from pneumonia. The trach has a valve so that when she inhales she can use her voice to speak, not sure how that works, John explained there is a balloon in the trach that deflates when she inhales (I think I got that right). She is in good spirits, enjoys visitors and needs them to encourage her to talk more. She has a neurological problem in that she cannot control her legs at times and they flail around. Hopefully physical therapy etc will put her on the road to recovery sooner. She has a long road ahead of her. Please keep her and the family in your prayers. Thanks

Update - Doris was moved to another hospital downtown for extensive theraphy and was there about 2 weeks then sent home for continued healing. Last Sunday was her first Sunday home in 14-15 weeks and her husband brought her to church in a wheelchair. It was good to see her after so long and she is improving slowly. Her condition appears to be = she can barely maneuver herself (with help) from one wheelchair to another, can move the chair about a bit by herself, speaks very softly, her voice is weak and it is difficult for her to talk but she must keep practicing. I'm not aware of what kind of physical theraphy she is undergoing (as outpatient?) nor what kind of breathing exercises she needs to strengthen her lungs. We pray she recovers and can sing for us again (she had a beautiful voice) and hopefully she can return to playing her guitar, flute etc. She will be a very long time of recovery but she is a fighter. Thank you all for your positive prayers for my friend.
