This was such a great game. It is one of those that I wish they would remake for modern OS's.
I am playing it again on Win XP and can't finish the game because it crashes in the zoo area trying to enter the Sphinx area. There is a save game that gets you into the area but after you do all there is to do in that area the game crashes again when entering back into the zoo. So I guess I will have to hang it up until I get my old computer with 98se set up again. If that even ever happens. Don't have room for a forth computer. cry

It truly is a great game. I have my old W98SE set up in my bedroom and I have Nightlong installed to replay at a later date. Would you believe that I still have my old W95 in storage with Orion Burger installed because I could not get it installed on my W98 even with the compatiable factor. I had better check if my W95 is still operational because it's been three years since it was used...the battery you know. I hope you get your old system up and running so you can finish the game. thumbsup

I never did get the chance to play Nightlong. I had always heard that it was a really good game. Maybe someday all the old classic games will be available in a format that will run on todays machines.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I second the Virtual PC suggestion. Just make sure if you are installing it on XP you choose the 2004 version, the 2007 caused me a lot of problems and didn't come with an uninstall, but 2004 works perfectly. I put Win98 on mine, but any other OS will work as well. Suddenly old games are playable again!

Hi Johnboy,

Did you try changing the game properties compatability mode to Win 95 (right click the game exe. icon-properties-compatability and check win 95. If not see if that works.

Regards,

Barry

Johnboy that happened to me. I think I tried compatability and lowering the hardware acceleration and that worked. Also if you can get a saved game anywhere after you have to go in the Sphinx room that will work (see walkthrough). I think that's the only placed it crashed and I was able to get through the rest of it.
There's also a patch; did you install it.

I can still play it - on my Win98SE machine - but maybe GOG will tweak it for us some day ??

Another oldie with a really good story grin

That's a VERY old patch that predates XP.
If you download it and unzip it, it comes with a readme that says
Quote:
Nightlong - Union City Conspiracy Patch version 1.1

This patch was coded to fix video problems experienced with some new video cards such as Voodoo3 and Savage4. Just replace the "nl.exe" file copied to your hard disk when the game was installed, with this new version.

Note for German version: please press "y" instead of "j" to quit the game.

The crash at the Sphinx happens with both Windows ME and Windows XP. Using the saved game may get you past it, but you miss out on a chunk of the game. The best solution is to play using Windows 98, either on a computer with Windows 98 or on Windows 98 inside of Virtual PC (or possibly VMware).

Just curious; why hasn't this topic been whisked away to the Tech board?

To add what Barry said: While you are there, I added checkmarks to all of the boxes and this worked for me.
Another solution that worked for others was to change your computer resolution default to 640 X 480, you might have to jump through hoops to dig out that resolution. (I hope I got the resolution right, it’s been awhile I haven't used that resolution).

Good luck and as mentioned by Mad, hopefully GOG will pick this one up; I am also hoping to play this game again.

It's a wonderful game and I had no problems with it on XP. smile

As for GOG getting it, it's not the same as to say, that THEY can make it work laugh

Probably because I had already exhausted all my hopes of getting the game to run. All suggestions that were mentioned here were already tried by me and none got the game going from that point at the zoo. The only available remedy is a saved game that gets you into the Sphinx area but the game crashes again when you go back.
I merely wanted to acknowledge what a great game it is and that my hopes of finishing it on XP were hopeless.
I did dig out an old emachine with Win XP installed. If I can figure out how to format the drive to install 98SE, I plan on getting that done sometime this week.

Do you not want to try the Virtual PC option? It's not a huge download and would solve your problem.

Does it work on Vista 64? I do not have an internet connection on the XP computer.

I don't think Virtual PC 2004 works with 64-bit Vista.
But you could download the Virtual PC installer on your 64-bit Vista and copy it to a CDR or flash drive to move it to your XP computer.
You can download Virtual PC 2004 from here

Well I finally was able to get the Virtual PC going. The game is now playing fine. I was able to get into the sphinx area with no problem. Glad to find out about the virtual PC. Had no clue it existed. Thanks all. JB
