I can't seem to locate the "counter flap" to enter the basement. I found the cellar just fine, though.

By the way, I think the inkeeper is a ghost, as he walked right through me eek

Ikonius, if you examined the stuff on the desk and talked with the bookseller and telling him you are a writer interested in the war, you should be able to go to your right and open the counter flap.

Hope this can be of help.

Here's another question for you, and now I'm POSITIVE I am where I should be LOL

I need to have Henry translate something (about the talking machine) but I have no dialog option to that effect. I also tried dragging/dropping the index and the book, to no avail. Little help please?

I'm assuming you've already unlocked the book. Click to examine all the pages in the book. Then go upstairs and talk to Henry. He needs another book in order to translate the one you just unlocked. From the walkthrough:

Click to reveal..
Go downstairs (enable lantern) and find a book called The War of Northbridge. This book is easy to see -- it's on the second shelf of the other bookcase (not the one that contained the first book) and the book is a greenish color. Go back upstairs and talk to Henry completely. Buy the camera, the map, the music box, and the jeep.

Leave the store and then return. Henry will give you an Index of what's in the book. It goes into inventory. Right-click to examine it. It seems as though you should be able to combine the index with some of the thoughts in Howard's Mind, but I never did manage to get that to work.

If you've already done the above, I think you may need to use the map to go to the Old Building/hovel and get as far as possible there, then come back and Henry will have done the translation.

Becky,

I've done all of the above. The only strange thing is that I no longer have the "Any progress?" dialog option when I talk to Henry. And he already has both books. Should I be doing something with the index in Howard's Mind to trip a flag?

Ikonius -- I don't think you need Howard's mind to do anything. How far did you get at the Old Building/hovel? Are you down in the cellar yet? Maybe getting into the cellar triggers something. I think the translation is about the speaking machine in the cellar -- have you clicked on everything near or on the speaking machine down in the cellar?

The only other thought -- is the translation finished and it just wasn't made obvious? Is there anything new in your inventory?

If none of that works -- there is at least one other walkthrough out there. If you google it, you could see if it describes something not in my walkthrough. grin

Hi, I found the untripped flag. Let's just say it's the biggest, strangest and oldest-looking thing in the room that needs to be clicked on (and the only thing I'd passed!) You then get a "Henry" thought from Howard reminding himself to ask Henry to translate the speaking machine bit.

I've checked the other w/t and there's no mention of this specifically.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction smile

You're more than welcome.

By the way, you never did take us back to that big metal door with the letters lock below The Gate...
