I've been bouncing between playing KQ8 and this game and in this one I'm stuck near the end of act 2. I've double checked the hints on UHS-hints and in MaG's walkthrough, and have come up emptyhanded, I honestly don't see what I'm missing. When I travel back to Poirot's office, and try to click on that finger thing, Poirot tells me it can not aid me this time, so I click on him and choose the I'm at my wit's end option and he just tells me that most of the hotel's staff is away from their area and to snoop. I have done that, numerous time for Mrs. Castle, Gladys, the beach attendant and the bartender, coming up absolutely empty every single time.

Does anyone have a save from the opening of act 3, or can point me to what I'm missing?

Thank you so much, oldmariner laugh That'll give me something to play after work tomorrow evening!

Question though...where do I copy the saved game files to? My Evil Under The Sun folder doesn't have a sub folder called Saved games (or something to that effect. I tried making one, but when I open the game it doesn't show that game, it only shows the one I had saved while playing (which I titled Act II) I also tried copying them to the EUTS main directory, but it still doesn't appear in the game menu frown

If you're using XP then the save folder should be at: C:\Program Files\The Adventure Company\Evil Under the Sun\Saved.Games

For Windows 7 or Vista you'll need to try a file search.

You could also try enabling viewing hidden files & folders if you haven't already. Sometimes folders get hidden that way.

luck

Thanks, oldmariner.

Okay...here's the weird thing. I did a search (as my computer has Vista Home Basic as it's OS) and it couldn't even find my saved game (the one I titled Act II)

So I looked in C:\Program Files\The Adventure Company\Evil Under The Sun, and there are no files named Act II, and the only folders are: Elements, Interface, Inventory, Locations, Models, Movies, Sound & Text.

I'm starting to wonder if when I installed the game if maybe it didn't fully install right since a file search doesn't even find the saved game I did in the game.

I took a look back through some older threads, and it seems the save files for this game are difficult to find in Vista -- none of the threads I checked were successful in finding the relevant folder. Did you try showing your hidden files & folders just in case? Here's how, in case you're not sure:

Open your Documents folder. From the top toolbar, select "Tools".
Select "Folder Options", then "View".
You may then need to scroll down a little until you see "Hidden files and folders". Be sure that the box for "Show hidden files & folders" is checked.
Confirm and exit out.
Then try searching for the save folder again.

I have no idea where Vista buries saves. Rushes is correct for the XP location. One other point, that save I sent is named slot12.act and slot12.bmp

You will need to rename them by changing the number to reflect the next highest number in the saves in the game. If there is a gap in numbered order the save will not be recognized.

Good luck in finding the saves. Somebody with Vista should be able to tell you.

Also you could do a search by typing in (slot) in the files search box at START/search/files and folders. In XP use the Start button on your bottom bar on the desktop.

Although I still can't find where the game saves at, I do have amazing news! I figured out what I needed to progress! I was missing the brochure next to the door in the Library/Alchemist shop/Post Office.

Thanks for your help though, Oldmariner and Rushes

Now if I can find what's halting me near the end of act 4...

Yesterday I printed off MaG's walkthrough and I'm following it. I got to the part where you get the three gold darts and use the to unlock the hidden secret passage in Smuggler's End's basement. I went into the passage and looked at the footsteps, and took the luminescent coat.

The walkthrough next says to leave the pub, go back to the hotel and down to Rocky Beach and talk to Emily Brewster. Here's my problem, when I do just as the walkthrough directs, I arrive in Rocky Beach and Emily is nowhere to be seen.

Difficult to say what you might have missed doing -- this series is so picky with detail. Be sure to have read all documents picked up along the way, and that you have right-click-examined all items in your inventory. That can sometimes be the problem. I'd also suggest checking back carefully against the walkthrough to see if you can spot anything that hasn't been done yet. Once you've done absolutely everything, that should trigger Emily's appearance.

I double checked everything. I had missed examining some stuff in the inventory and reading some stuff in the journal, but I examined everything, even stuff I knew I already had and read everything, still no Emily.

I headed back to Poirot's office and used the Finger if Suspicion, and the only names available is Col. Weston and Christine Redfern, and it says to talk to them. I cant find Christine anywhere, and Col. Weston just says "Can we talk another time, I have my other duties to attend to."

I've just recalled that there is a glitch in this game with the car repair puzzle on the mainland, which stops progress through to the next Act of the game. The car repair needs to be done after everything else possible has been done on the mainland.

How to find out if you've got the glitch: return to the mainland and see if the car is still in the garage. If it is, then you'll need to replay from an earlier save while you were still on the island, before fixing the car.

Keep us posted!

This is starting to seam like a solutionless battle. I've resumed this earlier save five times. I've made sure to examine everything in the inventory, read everything in the documents and all other sections of the journal. Before even entering the garage, I do all that and also go to the three other buildings on the mainland that I can. I try talking to the people there, and get nowhere...so I do the car puzzle and continue onward to the island and get the darts, followed by going to the pub and getting the coat. As new things arrive in the inventory and the journal I read/examine them. After the pub part is complete, I leave and head to rocky beach, yet still no Emily.

Has Poirot mentioned hearing the sound of water running during the day when nobody usually would be taking a bath? I looked for that in the walkthrough, on the theory that Emily's appearance depends on something else that happened earlier. Didn't see it until I came to the summing up in the last chapter.

I'm not saying that's it, only that someone had to throw something earlier for her to mention it after you see Emily on the rocky beach. ( I know that doesn't make sense but if I'm remembering the sequence of events correctly - the big question - the running water and the thing that nearly hit her are connected.)

Honestly, this game is not non-linear! You toe the line or else!

Did you check to see if the car is still in the garage, or if it has gone now?

You've hit that glitch then. You certainly won't be able to move on if you try to continue using your current saved game. You'll need to go back to a save before the garage and replay through again exactly by the walkthrough. Argh! I know you've said you've already done this more than once, but there's something you're missing doing on the mainland that's messing things up here. frown

I'm starting to wonder if I need to just plumb start fresh with the beginning. I have a save from the beginning of Act 3, and that's the one I restore and play from and follow the walkthrough explicitely except for the spot where you talk to Christine outside the hotel at night time, and give her the sketchpad

If you have one at the beginning of Act 4 that should be good enough. It's the garage/mainland section in Act 4 that's causing the problem, not anything in Act 3, as the game wouldn't have allowed you to progress into Act 4 otherwise. luck with whatever you decide to do.

A question just appeared in my head while unsuccessfully playing again (though I now have a save from the opening of Act 4)

in the walkthough, it says (and I'll type it as written)

Original high point of the Island: Go back to hotel.
Go to go to the path going to the cliff side. *At the lounge chairs, automatically start pacing to the different directions.
The Gardeners are close by.

Okay...the question that occurs to me is, if I've done everything correctly at this point, where would I see the Gardeners? Everytime I've played through the act I've never seen them

It sounds from the walkthrough as though the Gardeners aren't always located at the same place as you play through this part. Have you looked everywhere for them? lol

No, I've just gone to the original highpoint at cliff side then Poirot automatically begins pacing

this time I made sure to specifically look for the Gardeners, and I looked everywhere for them, but couldn't find them anywhere in the island.

I even wound up starting fresh from act one and following your W/T to the letter, but I got the same result frown The only other thing I can think of trying if fully uninstalling the game and reinstalling and seeing if that help any since it's past 3:30 here and I'm a bit sleepy, I'll try that tomorrow

A few weeks later I shall give EUTS another go...I finally found out where Vista puts the saved files!

C:\Users\**\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\The Adventure Company\Evil Under the Sun\Saved.Games

where I listed ** the person's specific windows username (like mine's Jen) would be

xoxo, Jen

-----------------------------------------------
I played through act 4 but still have the same problems. I took extra care to make sure I was following MaG's w/t to a tee, but alas, no success. Since I now know where to find EUTS's saves, can anyone help me with a save after finishing act 4? Thanks in advance

Great that you managed to find the save folder.

I no longer have my saves for this game and haven't been able to source any elsewhere, so let's wait and see if anyone still has theirs, and one at the point you need.

Hi Amanda,

Unfortunately I haven't been able to source any saves for this game -- I lost my own on my old computer. Perhaps someone else has a set to send you.

Or perhaps you could tell us exactly where you're stuck in the game, and we might be able to help you past this point?

So you're playing 2 sets on this game? Part 2 and Part 4?

In Part 2 - check the shops-bar in town-Leathercombe Bay then.

Part 4 - I sent you a saved game at Part - Smuggler's Inn Pub. I believe this is just before seeing Emily. luck
