Here it is: The definitive documentary regarding the real locations in Cornwall and Devon, UK, used as backdrops for The Lost Crown. You'll get to see comparisons of the in-game scenes to the real places, along with general information and trivia.
The video is pretty long, so it is in five parts. The first part is ready to watch now, and I'll be uploading the others over the next few days. Please take the time to click through advertising, as each click goes a little way towards paying for the cost of producing this documentary!
Cheers!

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I like the intermixing of video and screenshots from the game, as well as the brief info about the sites. I've heard your footsteps in the sand, AmunPtah, and I've seen your shadow! grin

I'm struck by how much the real town is grey, white and dark green -- the splashes of color (from a child's shirt or the hull of a boat) stand out just as the splashes of color stand out in the black and white images in the game.

Where is the tea-drinking-man in the pub? I missed him!

Eek! In a few shots (I remember the exterior of Gruel's Antiques being one) you'll get a glimpse of a figure in a white T-shirt - me!

On a wet day, Polperro truly becomes Saxton. Many of the locations set outside Saxton are very green, as you'll see in the other parts of the documentary.

I have learned how to adjust photos to create the same black and white with colour splashes effect as in The Lost Crown. I'll have to post a few pictures...

I don't quite understand. Do you mean Bob serving drinks at the bar? ZeframCochrane over at the AdventureGamers.com forums liked the waitresses!

I actually started looking for you. I thought I saw you on a display case (I think in the museum), but realized it was a puppet or figuring. lol (I mean figurine.)

The tea-drinking-man refers to a much earlier thread when the game first came out. He responded when I announced that the Saxton Village Council was complaining that hordes of adventurers had descended on their town. grin

Really, great stuff. I wished the screenshots from the game would be shown for a few more seconds, so it would be easier to look at it and find the final marking points to compare it with the video. But anyway, pretty nice work that you did there.

Excellent work, Tom--I enjoyed it tremendously!
The locations are even more beautiful then the game if that's possible.

At the beginning of Part 3, I saw what I thought were thousands of birds flying out of the hedges as you drove along that narrow road. Turns out it was raindrops on the windshield. lol

I would have liked to have them on a bit longer, but I found it broke up the flow too much when I dropped in a screenshot midway through a "walking" section. I'll experiment on the Barrow Hill tour that's on its way.
If Bracken Tor comes out soon I'll do a trip down this year to film those locations. And then there's The Last Crown...

I thoroughly enjoyed watching these videos! smile I feel like I have really been to Saxton, thanks to your fascinating tour! I can just begin to understand what a daunting task it was for Jonathan to do all the legwork and integrate all those many photographs into the game. It was extremely interesting to compare your video images with screen shots of the game and see what was left nearly the same and what changes Jonathan made to the scenes.

You created a great tour and did a fabulous job - thanks for all your legwork to create these videos. bravo If Bracken Tor does not come out at the end of October, I will be more than satisfied to play The Lost Crown again on Halloween weekend. I'm in the mood to play the game again now.

The stone and wood carving inside the church is beautiful! Do we still have the craftsmen around who could do that nowadays, I wonder?

Do they really allow crows to fly around INSIDE the church? (Does everybody wear hats inside?)

laugh

Thanks all! Part 5 is online now: http://blip.tv/on-location/exploring-saxton-part-5-5668562
The birds are not inside the church (although they did get in regularly before the roof repairs) but nest near the gables, making quite a bit of noise!

No problem at all. I'm working on the Barrow Hill one at the moment, and I will do a trip to Cornwall after Bracken Tor for that, and again for TLC2...
