Hi,

I've been playing this game for a bit and it plays fine but when there is a cut scene, the sound stutters. I just downloaded the latest driver and it hasn't helped, if anything, I'm afraid it might have made it worse. I'm wondering if the problem is with the disc or my dvd player. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

funkyhippy

It's probably related to your in-game (video) quality settings. Try lowering them a notch or two and see if it helps.

The game doesn't provide many options, only Brightness, Contrast and Subtitles. The Brightness and Contrast came preset at 50%, I've reduced them to 44 and 42 respectively. The subtitles are on. However, this hasn't made any difference to the stuttering sound. My laptop is only about two years old, do you think the DVD player could have gone bad? And why only the sound of the video?

Thanks

I had this problem in a game a couple of years ago and it turned out I needed to update the sound card drivers. When you said you updated the driver, you didn't say which one. Was it for the sound card?

As I recall, there were other options. I'll have to reload the game and take a look.

Apparently I still have the game installed on my laptop. In the version I have there is a program item (under Gray Matter, off the Start Menu) named Configuration. I have Shadows set to Low, Mirrors set to None and Rendering set to Medium.

My laptop has a GeForce 7600 GT and it played just fine.

Is your's the disc version, or was it a download?

OK, this is really creepy! After adjusting the sound and updating the video driver, I saw no improvement at all. I haven't been able to get back to the game until just now (by the way, I don't have the Configuration option, I even started a new game, but that option wasn't there). So now, after several days, I start the game and the sound is fine even though last time I tried several times but it wouldn't work well! I hope it keeps on working, but it makes me wonder again if the problem might not be the DVD player in my laptop. I am using a disk not a download.

Modern games install completely to the hard drive and the only reason to have the DVD in the drive is to pass the copy "protection" check. I doubt that's what's causing your sound problem. If the DVD player didn't read the game files correctly during the install, you'd be having sound problems now, just as you were when you first posted -- and quite possibly you'd have gotten a CRC error during the install.

It's more likely that the computer was running some maintenance programs in the background while you were trying to play the game, and it was eating up enough of your computer's resources to affect the game.
