Here you go:

Dead Mountaineer's Hotel

You need to set up a Steam account (if you don't already have one) in order to be able to buy and download the game.

Think it was 1024 x 768. I had to change it before starting the game as it didn't change it automatically. Also couldn't finish the game as for some reason the game wouldn't save for me. Tried all the suggestions here with no luck so gave up!! Hope it works for you. wave

Thanks, Upsy.

I'll move this thread to Glitches for more suggestions for you, Matty.

Hi Matty and Upsy-

The Steam forum said that you can change the gameengine.ini file if you're having problems with the resolution (supposed to run in 1024 X 768). I think someone said that they had to change the refresh rate to 60 from 0 to get the game to work. Good Luck

Was that the demo or the full game?

If it was the game, the things to try are:

Install in a location that Windows isn't trying to protect from changes -- for example in your user's My Documents folder.

Start the game as an administrator by right-clicking the game exe or shortcut and choosing to Run as Administrator.

Change the compatibility mode of the game to Windows 2000 (a different compatibility mode may work better on your computer).

Temporarily disconnect from the Internet and turn off your antivirus when you play.

You may have to do one, two, or all of these things in order to get the game to save, despite the fact that people will tell you the game worked perfectly on their computers without making any changes. No two computers are alike. If you order 10 computers the exact same model and specs from a computer manufacturer, there will always be one of them that is different and will have quirks.

Is it saying "optimum mode" or is it saying "not optimum mode" and not displaying a picture on the screen?
If it is this error

one of the Youtube viewers had a fix:

After 4 years' trying, I got easiest even perfect solotion. D:

step 1: Connect monitor to computer

step 2: Apply Linux system (the logo disappears)

step 3: Reset VGA similar to Windows set

step 4: Press F8, apply Windows safe mode, and set resolutions again

Hopefully, it recovers. Good luck.!!

Your Samsung monitor is what is producing the message.
At the bottom edge of your display there should be a row of buttons, one
of which will initiate 'auto adjustment' on the monitor settings, this
should bring your display back at least temporarily.
You should also check that the screen resolution setting you have in
Windows matches the native resolution of your Samsung display, it will
contintue to blank the screen if you do not set it to native resolution.

If these do not apply, tell us the name and model number of your monitor -- for example, Samsung Syncmaster 710N

I downloaded the manual for your monitor and here is what it says in the Troubleshooting section:
Quote:
Can you see "Not Optimum Mode","Recommended mode 1280 x 1024 60 Hz" on the screen?

You can see this message when the signal from the video card exceeds the maximum resolution and frequency that the monitor can handle properly.
Adjust the maximum resolution and frequency that the monitor can handle properly.

If the display exceeds SXGA or 75 Hz, a "Not Optimum Mode","Recommended mode 1280 x 1024 60 Hz" message is displayed.

If the display exceeds 85 Hz, the display will work properly but the "Not Optimum Mode","Recommended Mode 1280 x 1024 60 Hz" message appears for one minute and then disappears.

Please change to the recommended mode during this one-minute period. (The message is displayed again if the system is rebooted.)

You need to make sure your refresh rate is set to 60Hz.
Are you able to get into normal Windows at all?
If not, start the computer in VGA mode. Instructions here
http://www.playtool.com/pages/safemode/safemode.html
I think you can change your resolution from VGA mode.

Have you installed monitor drivers for your model monitor or are you just using the Plug 'n Play drivers? Sometimes drivers that are made for your monitor will work better.

According to ***this***, it's looks like what I'd call a flaw in the monitor's software design, where you can't get rid of this useless message (useless when using the non-optimum mode doesn't risk harming the monitor). You could try setting your desktop to 75Hz and see if it makes a difference.
