I completely agree with the video and have felt that way for years.
The only reason they seem to need to exist is due to prices that fall a penny short of the next dollar (.99, 1.99, 2.99, etc). Doing that may have been a workable marketing ploy at one time but do retainers still believe people don't realize those prices mean $1,$2,&$3? If they were priced to the whole dollar, pennies could easily be abolished. Plus, with the abundance of credit cards, how many of use cash that much any more?
Everytime I pay cssh, if it involves a few pennies, I refuse it. I don't know abuot anywhere else, but in the Chicago suburbs it's common for cashiers to have a small container of pennies nearby. People who don't want their pennies leave them in that container so that when someone else is short on a bit of change, the cashier simply dips into the penny container. I've had cash transactions where I've donated and others when, instead of giving me change from a nickel, the cashier adds the amount from the penny container. So, in the long run, one customer helps another. It's easy, compassionate and cool.
