I keep getting a weird message some time after I have turned off Windows Internet Explorer.
It reads 'The installation at 0x05cf8197 referenced memory at 0x00000000 could not be read.
Click OK to terminate the program'

It doesn't seem to matter, since I have already shut IE down, and it doesn't stop me from reloading IE when I next wish to, but it seems to be strange.

Is this a problem with IE or with my computer - or what?

It may be a toolbar or add-on in the browser. Try running IE in safe mode. You can (or at least shoud) find it located under Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Are you still getting the "The installation at 0x05cf8197 referenced memory at 0x00000000 could not be read" error message after turning off add-ons?

Yes, I believe so.
I have not done anything to turn off add-ons, but as I wrote above, the message I get is that IE is running without add-ons.

petert,

Your exact question...and an answer...is here. Maybe that will help.

Gil.

petert, if you run IE in Safe Mode, you will not have any add-ons. What they're asking is if you are still getting the error message when running it in Safe Mode. If you're not, then the culprit is likely an add-on that DOES run when you are running IE in normal mode.

And maybe one of the links that Gil provided will explain too...

Followed the instructions on the Microsoft site and disabled all 5 of the add-ons. (Don't understand why I had previously been assured that IE was 'running without add-ons', but there you are).
They were 4 Microsoft add-ons - Bing Bar and Bing Bar Helper, Microsoft Silverlight, and Research, and Adobe Shockwave Flash Object.

Weird message disappeared!

Flushed with success, I re-enabled all 5 one by one, but at no time during the reinstallation sequence did the message come back when I came out of IE. Not even when I had put all 5 back in.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

petert

Curses!
Spoke too soon.
Message is back again, so I have disabled all 5 add-ons again.

Try disabling the Adobe add on, rebooting and seeing what happens.

Yup! Next, try disabling one of the Microsoft add-ons until you find the culprit.

Tried all that, to no avail, but then discovered that there were more add-ons enabled. I did not notice that there was a scroll-down arrow on the list of add-ons, so I duly scrolled down and found 3 Google add-ons that were apparently installed just before I first noticed the message.
Having disabled them all, I THINK the problem has gone away.

Thanks to all
