Yeah, I'm becoming hopeless.
I like suspense/murder mystery and have played all of Art of Murder series, Scratches, Post Mortem, Still Life I & II, and Dracula:Origin.
I don't mind horror as long as there's a good story and suspense with it. I can't do FPS because I die fast and often.
What do you guys suggest?

to Gameboomers BabaLa. First off, tell us which Windows you are using? XP, Win 7, Win 98? Yes, there are some around here and I still have mine. Works great too. Anyway, this will help us tell you which games you can play. Bets

Win 7, so I can do most adventure games, plus an NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card.
I've done Mystery of the Mummy, but really want to play Testament of Sherlock Holmes when it's available.

Have you played the other Sherlock Holmes games like Nemesis (SH vs. Arsene Lupin) or The Awakened? I would ask about The Silver Earring but that has a horrible action sequence in it.
Have you played any of The Last Half of Darkness games? I particularly like The Tomb of Zojir, myself, and Society of the Serpent Moon. They're horror but not horrible, more creepy and atmospheric.
And before I forget, Black Mirror 2. Very good game. In my opinion, the best of the three.

Try looking over Andrew Plotkins review list--anything on there is worthwhile(unless of course he trashes it): eblong.com/zarf/gamerev

to Gameboomers BabaLa. Well, everyone already beat me to The Lost Crown recommendation, which perfectly fits your criteria. Glad you're going to start with that one. The Black Mirror series may also be something you would enjoy. I would start with the first before the second because I actually played the second game first and felt I was missing quite a bit. After experiencing the story of the first, I appreciated the second game much more, as the locations I was visiting and characters I was meeting carried a lot more meaning. And the third completed the trilogy nicely. I favored the first overall, but they were all good. If you don't mind older games from the 90's and haven't played them yet, I strongly recommend the Gabriel Knight games, which are some of the best games I've ever played. You can find the entire series at http://www.gog.com/. And Jane Jensen, the writer of the GK games, came out with a new game, Gray Matter, recently, which was also excellent. EDIT: Hm, I checked out Andrew Plotkins's list, and he pretty much hated (or at the very least was luke warm toward) every game I loved. Seems like he doesn't like third person dialogue based games and finds them a chore. Not recommended unless you're strictly a first person fan.

Thanks a million for all the great recs!
Third person dialogue games don't bother me very much. As long as the story is good, and it keeps me interested, I'll play it.
I think the first "old game" I ever played was Zork: Grand Inquisitor. It came with my new computer and I thought it was hilarious.
I'm dying to play Testament of Sherlock Holmes when it comes out. Is there any one of the older ones you recommend over the others?
I have Black Mirror I and Grey Matter, but didn't complete either. The first was glitchy, the second didn't grab me, so I asked ya'll for recs.

Hi BabaLa, For the Frogwares Sherlock Holmes series, they are all quite different in tone. SH vs Arsene Lupin (aka Nemesis) is the most challenging and puzzley, but with a light feel and humour. The Awakened is quite dark in its theme, and the storyline is gripping. SH vs Jack the Ripper is my own personal favourite -- the environments are fantastic, and the theory as to who JTR was, is very credible. The puzzles for this one are easy, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Silver Earring is also wonderful, but as traveler says, it has a few offputting timed sections. Otherwise, it's a cracker too.

Babala, the first Darkfall Game: TheJournal was good. Not sure if it will play on newer PC though. One of my favorites.

I'm playing The Lost Crown now and loving it. It's just intuitive enough that I haven't touched the WT, n00b that I am, but challenging enough to hold interest. I hear it goes on for days.
Thank you for the other recs too!
BTW other games I've done are Syberia I & II, Paradise, and Sinking Island.

Isn't there a way of making older games play on PC? For instance, I have Win 7, but I think you can alter it to make Win XP games play, but I can't remember how it's done.

BabaLa -- the talented folks in the GameBoomers Glitches forum have lots of ideas for getting older games to run if you're having problems. They also have a list of games that members have played on Win 7 with no problems.

Finished The Lost Crown in 5 days, mainly because it was so engrossing (and I pulled an all-nighter the last day). Fabulous game! And there's to be a sequel?
I had the misfortune of already purchasing Dead Mountaineer's Hotel previously without paying attention to the review here. What a snore! Wandering about endlessly in a clunky interface with little to do.
I'm going to start working on your recs now, and reading the reviews a bit closer, eh? Thanks again for all your input.

Hmmm, would you recommend getting the trilogy? It's only 24.99

I'd recommend Tomb of Zojir anytime. It's in the trilogy and it's Billy's best game, IMO, followed by Serpent Moon as a close second. Can you get all four? Gil.

BabaLa, That's a great price on that trilogy. Go for it. If you like them, you'll be back for Serpent Moon. The LHOD games are all first person through Zojir and you are the stranger moving through these eerie, haunted places. Serpent Moon is third person if that makes any difference to you, but just as atmospheric and creepy. I don't much care for first person games, as a rule, but these are so easy to move through that I didn't even think about it after a minute or two. Anyway, IMO, whatever you get you can't lose. Gil.

I don't mind 1st vs 3rd person games. It's all good.
Finished SH vs Jack, and SH:The Awakened. Really don't like it when I know what to do but have to look at Objects A thru L, and talk to Persons A, B & C before I can actually do it. Still I love Sherlock.
Wondering if they're going to tease us with screenshots of Testament forever or it's actually going to be released!

I second the Gabriel Knights. I don't think I've ever met an adventure gamer who disliked the series, and they're one of my favorite of all times. Kinda suit what you described in your preferences.
On the other side, I couldn't stand the lost crown, and you liked it - so... :-)

Welcome to GB. If you haven't already, add a generous dose of Tex Murphy. Not a big Gabriel Knight fan, but I did like Sins Of The Fathers and LOVED The Lost Crown. Still Life and Post Mortem are excellent for the murder and detective end, too. PLUS, Chief has a huge amount of detective type games in the free games department.

Hey, BabaLa, You asked about Tex Murphy. Do you like film noir mixed with sci fi? Well, here's a review of one of the Tex Murphy games by a guy who kinda, sorta likes it. I haven't played any of them yet but they're waiting in the stack and who knows, I may join the cult that longs for Tex's return. There's quite a bit about Chris Murphy's Tex on the web and videos of the games on YouTube. Gil.

Post-apocalyptic San Francisco? That's got to be interesting. I take it since the review is from 1998, I'll be looking for him on GOG.
I keep seeing ads for Carol Reed mysteries. Are they any good?

Very good to know. Is it necessary to play them in order, or can I just pick and choose?
I know I'm picking your brains incessantly, but there are just so many choices out there. What do you think of the Dark Fall trilogy?

It is not necessary to play them in order but if you do you can catch some subtle references to previous adventures. Ana

Hi BabaLa I've followed the thread & see that you have been given many good recommendations. The Last Half of Darkness games, I thought, were wonderful especially the latest one Society of the Serpent Moon which introduced a 3rd person perspective for the first time. I was completely engaged throughout The Lost Crown - a very long game which frustrated & disappointed me on conclusion because of the lack of explanation & tie-up of the overall plot - I'm hoping this will be resolved in the sequel The Last Crown which I'm looking forward to. I don't mind a little ambiguity where you can make up your own mind such as the conclusion to Paradise. Some later games I thought excellent & worthy of recommendation were A New Beginning, Alter Ego, Memento Mori, 15 Days, & finally Alpha Polaris - quite short & download only. All of these games have intriguing storylines but in the case of 15 Days please be warned - many players have encountered technical problems with the disc version - I don't know whether these were resolved in download versions available. Good Luck with your BAAGs training - it won't take long! NB We do as a gaming community, as well as indulging ourselves in old classics, need to support newer games to keep current developers in business!

Yes, I do appreciate the newer game recs. Lost Crown was fab and I look forward to the sequel. I'm all about supporting game devs, especially since it's so difficult to stay in business.
I'm going to try Alter Ego. Thanks, Chrissie.
Thanks to everyone for their great game recs!
BTW can anyone tell me what a Spider is, as in 15 Spiders online?

Google is probably here. Spiders are also known as web crawlers. Honestly, I think Google comes by a lot since a thread will find its way there very quickly. Let us know what you think of Alter Ego. Gil.
