But it's so predictable. If it weren't for having to pay attention to find hidden objects, I could have whizzed through the demo on automatic.
Then there's the always annoying factor that the protagonist will constantly let him or herself be sidetracked by a zipper that doesn't have a pull or a chest that for some unknown reason has a peculiar lock which, for an equally unknown reason, just has to be opened. I never feel as if they're really frantic. If, just once, one would say aloud, "Okay, I should just calm down and search everything here for a clue," I might be less inclined to want to yell at him/her to get a move on and stop fiddling with everything in sight. Sure, it's a game, but really! They might give a nod to what people really go through.
Becky should write a piece on originality and/or human feeling in casual games. Of course, she might be staring blankly at her monitor close to forever trying to think of an example.
Gil.

Gil! I agree with gamenut that my biggest pet peeve that annoys me the most is having a crowbar and you use it once and then have to look for another one to open a box in the next room. I do however love Elephant Games and you always get a lot of game for you dollars. Ana

Thumbs up on your comment, Gil, However, I was impressed with Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray. The protagonist would breathe fast when something frightened him or angered him, kinda cool.
My pet peeve would be when you must suceed with a particularly long and challenging puzzle to open a box, only to find something minor. Ack!
Do like the Mystery Trackers series.

"My pet peeve would be when you must suceed with a particularly long and challenging puzzle to open a box, only to find something minor." Oh, no kidding! And the crowbar you can't use on anything but one specific item though you've been lugging it around forever. And (so true) the knife you gaily tossed away just before you needed it again. And the pile of leaves you won't brush aside because you might get your hands dirty. Lol! They obviously don't know me. Yeah, adventure games are more my thing because they're so involving, most of them. There are a few casuals I've played that were really good and kept me playing because I was interested and did want to know what came next. And, let's face it, you can hit the Windows key and go do what you should be doing then come back really easily. I like them well enough, they just have much more propensity to annoy the heck out of me. Gil.

I like Elephant games also. I played this one twenty minutes and bought it. Maybe if I get a crowbar I'll get to keep it. Love all the comments.

If, just once, one would say aloud, "Okay, I should just calm down and search everything here for a clue," I might be less inclined to want to yell at him/her to get a move on and stop fiddling with everything in sight. Ugh! I gladly do without those sorts of comments. I want to play the game, not listen to the protagonist blabbing about obvious things I can see for myself. If they're going to talk, it should be important to the story or offer a clue to a puzzle. I was impressed with Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray. The protagonist would breathe fast when something frightened him or angered him, kinda cool. I hate that kind of thing. I don't want to listen to the character breathing. I always end up telling them to stop breathing. I can do my own breathing. I don't like hearing footsteps either. They're nearly always inappropriate for what's being stepped on.

I have recently begun playing casuals without the sound, I find I can focus more on what I have to do. I usually skip the dialogue and cut scenes anyways, since the diary or journals contain all you need. One of the recent games I played didn't have a journal (Grim Tales maybe?), but that just added to the challenge.

I have recently begun playing casuals without the sound, I find I can focus more on what I have to do. But a good music soundtrack or good ambient sound can add to the game's atmosphere. Sometimes puzzles can have aural clues as well. There may be some where I turn off all sound, but not that many. I usually skip the dialogue and cut scenes anyways, since the diary or journals contain all you need. One of the recent games I played didn't have a journal (Grim Tales maybe?), but that just added to the challenge. I've played more than one that didn't have a journal -- or that had a very sketchy journal -- or that had a journal that included different information than was revealed in cut scenes.
