These are from what we thought was quite a tricky puzzle and although I have answers for all of them, I am still struggling with some of the justifications:

* 1. Fringe, associated with Mile in Edinburgh, always havoc (6) - mayhem

* 2. Be more adventurous, eg knocking back one of Mr Kipling's tucking into porky pie... (3,1,4) - get a life

* 3. Contrarily, design includes gold on bronze liner (10) - Mauretania

* 4. Group of cats piddling - sidestep left and right (6) - litter

* 5. Boffin, first in engineering, occupying piano? No way (8) - Einstein

* 6. Fling mashed potato, say, around pan edge in infancy (9) - dalliance

* 7. Single male penetrates novel in Dutch (9) - unhitched

* 8. Movie featuring GI and the victory over Germany? (4,4,3,4) - Gone with the wind

1. Fringe, associated with Mile in Edinburgh, always havoc (6)

Easy enough, thanks to "hem" = fringe; mayHEM;
but "Mile in Edinburgh" = may ?!

Correct CD and Bernie, but sorry Soot.

CD, Mile = m + ay = in Edinburgh always!

Bernie, a litter of kittens.

I have now given you the letters we had.

We think that 3 must begin with M and the third letter of 7 is probably H, but those could be wrong.

We cannot fully explain any of the three remaining answers (although we cannot see what else they could be!), so will be interested to see what you come up with...

on = REgarding
bronze = TAN

Thanks Jill, I can see that my problem was mis-spelling Mauretania with an i instead of the e...! oops

Okay, our answers were:

#6 dalliance = fling - mashed potato, say = dance around alli or llia, but how/why is either of those "pan edge in infancy"?

#7 unhitched = single, but how/why is that "male penetrating novel in Dutch"?

7. Single male penetrates novel in Dutch (9) U_H_T_H_D

You already have single = unhitched (direct)

he (male) included in (penetrates) unhitcd (anagram [novel] of "in dutch") = unhitc(he)d

Thank you Jema: I should have thought of that, but an anagram did not cross my mind!

For #6, "pan", as a prefix, means all and the edge of infancy is "i"? wink

Thanks: that works, and I must remember that use of pan!

Apologies for tardy response, but we were travelling back from France and then I was busy at work!
