Here I am again, another problem.

I've played Dracula Origin before, though I cannot remember if it was with XP or not. Probably. Now I'm running Win 7, 64 bit. I have the boxed copy and after installing it, first in the default location then in C:\, everything is fine until I click New Game. The screen goes black and nothing happens although Task Manager tells me the game is running.

Is this a Tages problem? Is it possible I need a Tages update?

I honestly can't figure it out. Initially, I took the disk out to see if it would play without it (should after that long install) and darned if an activation code window didn't come up. There is no activation code on this boxed copy. And, as I've said, I've played the game before and wasn't asked for one. But with the disk in there...New Game = black screen.

Do any of you have a clue as to what I should do now? I would surely be grateful.

If you haven't downloaded the Tages copy protection update for Windows 7, then you need to do that before the game will run. I think I have a link to it in the Windows 7 and Games thread, but I'll have to check.

I don't know which edition of the game you have, but mine was published long before games used TAGES as copy "protection."

That one is for Dracula Resurrection, not Dracula Origin!

Jenny's link was for Dracula Resurrection, not Dracula Origin. Dracula Origin needs the Tages copy protection update before it will work on 64-bit Windows 7. Make sure your version of Tages is 5.5.7.2.

If you have the correct version, then I'm not sure what's going on as I know you have more than enough "computer" to run the game. Unless you have a quad core processor? I can't remember what you got.

Yep, it's a quad core. You think that's it? If so, why do the title pages load? Because they're more or less static?

I went to tagesprotection.com and downloaded the Setup_x64. When I clicked on it, it gave me the info I noted above so I assume it's the right driver.

It cold be, I suppose, that the game just won't run on Win 7, 64 bit. Does that mean I'm doomed to trying a Virtual PC? Grim certainly wouldn't play in one I tried when I had XP, even with the launcher.

Btw, the No-CD didn't help.

Oops. Sorry. Draclvr's right. I can't read today. I'm not sure why I was thinking of Dracula Resurrection. Maybe because I was thinking of replaying it.

Actually if the game starts enough to get to the Main Menu, it may not be a TAGES problem either.

Oh, yeah, I vaguely remember that about the PhysX drivers. Traveler, I just loaded it on my Windows 7 and it plays just fine. I checked my Nvidia driver and it's dated 5/25/2011. That PhysX update was released in August 2010.

I went to that link for the physx driver and it's dated 2010.08.11. I can't figure out if that's 08/Aug. or 11/Nov. but it's definitely 2010, not 5/25/11. Are we talking about the same thing?

It shouldn't. But create a restore point before installing it if you're worried. You might also check your (Add/Remove) Programs list to see if you already have a version of PhysX installed. Either the PhysX linked to or the one Draclvr has should work.

I didn't download from that page. What I've done is keep my Nvidia drivers updated for my GTX 260 at Nvidia. Try going to the page for your i560 and see what the latest driver is there.

I just did, Drac. I'll see if that helps. The Physx driver didn't. It said I already have a newer version installed and cancelled. Hello? May I win sometime? <g>

If you want to try the older PhysX drivers, you'll have to uninstall the newer ones. It's possible for the older ones to work with a game while the newer ones don't. Inland said it happened to him, in ***this thread***.

Fingers crossed! There's always the option of running the game with only two cores instead of four. I can't remember how Jenny said to do that though.

I've tried compatibility settings for 2008, no go. XP, no use.

I found Focus Home Interactive and sent them a plea for help. We'll see if I get it.

If I don't, I can try rolling back to a previous version of Physx if I have it. I'll probably have to ask which version if I end up trying that.

Uninstall it from Add Remove Programs - you should see it as a separate program item.

There's nothing labeled Physx in my Uninstall or Change a Program folder. There is something called ProtectDisc Driver, Version 11. Is that it?

ProtectDisc is a copy "protection" driver.
So no that isn't it.

Could it be in your (Add/Remove) Programs list only not under P for PhysX? Maybe under N for Nvidia PhysX or A for Ageia PhysX?

I'm an idiot, but you knew that. It is under Nvidea. So, what is the fallout if I uninstall it? The game installs another version? And what happens afterward? Do I reinstall this one, which is 9.11.0621?

Your version of PhysX is current . The ramifications if you uninstall PhysX may or not be realized . I would suggest that , in order to uninstall PhysX , or video drivers for that matter , properly , to use a third party tool , such as Driver Sweeper : Driver Sweeper

More often than not , Windows will not uninstall a program or driver completely . Remnants will likely still be left , even though Windows displays that the program is no longer installed . Out of curiosity , while I was waiting on a game download , I pulled out my copy of Dracula Origin , & installed on my computer (Win 7 Ultimate x64 , six core cpu) . I was able to start a game with no issues .

Well, fine. I ran dxdiag and I'm missing files, mostly .dll files. They appear to be DirectX files even though MS refuses to replace my DirectX, saying that I already have the latest version installed. And it seems I can't uninstall and reinstall it.

I'm not sure this has a thing to do with Dracula Origin since I told it to go ahead and install DirectX 9. But something's screwy.

Sorry about all those vacant spaces. I didn't know whether to post the entire report or not. So I did. <g>

I found advice on replacing missing .dll files on About.com. Even so, not all of the files missing appear to be on this list.

So, what do you advise? Should I try his solution for the ones that are on the list?

I have no clue what a .vxd file is or why dxsetup.exe would be missing.

.vxd files were drivers for Windows 95/98/ME (and DOS).

The about.com website is describing a procedure for replacing a single DirectX file. You seem to be missing a lot more than that. I've never seen a dxdiag with so many empty categories. It doesn't even list a driver date or name for your video drivers.

Can you reinstall your video card drivers?

Jenny, I just found out that there are ways and ways of running dxdiag. I searched it and clicked on the file itself, which then gave me those results. But if I search it and hit Enter, a ton more info shows up. I can post it if you think you want to wade through it. Strangely enough, though, there is nothing at all about missing dlls in that run of dxdiag that I can see. Not that my eyes aren't glazing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the computer where the first video card failed and eCollegePC had to send you a replacement? I'm anxious to see what Jenny has to say about this DX DIAG.

The most recent driver for the GTX 460 is this one dated 10/24/2011 which is the one you have, as do I. My DXDIAG for the video looks pretty much like yours with the obvious differences between our video cards.

I'm not seeing anything wrong in the DXDIAG.
Maybe someone else can spot something.

I'm still suspicious of a problem with PhysX. The best version to use would probably be the one that came with the game. But if you uninstall your current version, follow Creeping_Doom's advice and use a driver cleaner afterward, before reinstalling any other version of PhysX. You may want to uninstall and reinstall the game after removing PhysX. That should install the correct version for the game.

Jenny, I heard back from Focus Home Interactive. It could have been a form email prompted by my squeak for help but nonetheless...should I wait and see what they say? If they say it reasonably soon?

About that driver cleaner. You use it 'after' you uninstall?

Use Driver Sweeper to uninstall both video & PhysX drivers , then reboot . Re install both video & PhysX (which will install with your video drivers) . An update of the tages drivers may be needed also .

CD, I found more than one version of Driver Sweeper out there. Are they the same? They look the same, but seem to be "powered by" different things like Phyxion and Guru3D.

Alright, now I know why I was confused (I thought we were talking about another game )

Let me see if I can find the game and reinstall it (after I remove my PhysX drivers). If I see them after that at least I'll know the game (this game) requires them.

Wait, are you saying I should uninstall my Nvidia drivers? Not gonna happen. I'm willing to uninstall the PhysX driver but there's no way I'm removing the rest of my updated Nvidia drivers. If that's a requirement, I'll just forget this game.

I don't know if it's a "requirement" or not, but you have a better chance starting from a clean slate. Up to you though.

If the problem IS the PhysX drivers, you'll probably have the same problem with other games that use PhysX -- which is most everything from Frogwares.

So, I can remove the PhysX driver without removing every other Nvidia driver.

I'm honestly not willing to have to go to Nvidia and download all my drivers again.

I loved Origin but this is screwy. When I played Nemesis and The Awakened, not long ago and on this computer, I didn't have any trouble with either of them. Something just doesn't compute.

What I was trying to convey (perhaps I should have stated as much) , is that it would not cause any harm to uninstall both PhysX & video drivers , with Driver Sweeper , then re-install both . I had read on a Frogwares forum posting , I believe , that if there was an issue with Origin , this very issue point of fact , to update the Tages drivers . Seeing as your Tages drivers are current , that renders that issue irrelevant . It would be wise to have a current copy of your video drivers on hand , so you do not have to re download . I wonder if this is not , by some strange chance , an Nvidia conflict . If I remember my research in the past , Frogwares have had issues with Nvidia drivers with a couple of their games . Which games specifically , I don't rightly remember . This may be a far gone question , are your Nvidia drivers current (current drivers are version 285.62) ?

Just to throw this into the mix, I have an Nvidia GTX 260 and have the same driver that Gil does - the 285.62 - for her GTX 460. I also have the same PhysX version and the game plays perfectly for me.

Gil, I have my downloaded drivers in my Download file on Windows 7 so I don't have to redownload them. If I uninstall my drivers, I don't have to redownload - I just go to my Download folder and reinstall from the file there.

CD, you say it's playing with 8 cores, so cores must not be the problem.

Gil, have you tried the game in Safe Mode? That might indicate a conflict with something on your computer.

Safe Mode never occurred to me, Draclvr. How does one play a game in Safe Mode? Or did you mean actually play in it?

Once I reboot, tap F8 repeatedly and get there, which of the options would I choose?

There could still be a problem if Traveler's drivers or PhysX have any corruption. There might also be a conflict between the video drivers and drivers for something on her system.

Home Focus Interactive (Dracula Origin, to be precise) got back to me. They checked my (more extensive) dxdiag and said that everything looked alright and to please install the protection patch (link). So, later today I'm going to try that and see what happens. I sure hope it works.

I sure hope this patch works for you. And, no, you wouldn't want to play a game in Safe Mode with the basic video drivers. If it works there, it just might indicate there was a conflict with another program on your PC. I agree with Jenny that there might be something - other drivers or whatever - that is in conflict with this game.

The patch didn't work. But I got it running.

I have the latest graphics driver from Nvidia but my PhysX driver wasn't up to date. I had the one released just before 9.1.1111. (I imagine it's much newer than the driver the game would have installed so go figure.) I installed it over the previous version and it worked.

Next time I'll have to remember that all those drivers have to be downloaded separately.

So, Jenny, you were on the right track. <g> Thank you all very much for giving so much thought to this. I'm happy. This is really one of my favorite games and I'd have hated to shelve it for good.
