Hi,

I all of a sudden have a Homegroup icon on my desktop. It has a green ball surrounded by 3 blue balls. (That's what the icon picture looks like.) I don't know where this came from or what it does. I don't know if I should/can just delete it or what.

Anybody know?

Thanks.

You can right-click on the icon, select properties, and find out what it is supposed to do. Report to us the contents of the General and Shortcut panels.

MaG,

I did google before posting and saw the page you link to above but I don't know. They don't show a picture of the icon that I saw.

Robert,

Right clicking only brings up:
Open
Change HomeGroup settings
View the HomeGroup password
Start the HomeGroup troubleshooter
Share with devices
Create shortcut

That's the one MaG. So it is not some virus/spyware/malware thing?

I don't really care if the icon is on my desktop as long as it is something that belongs in my computer. I just don't know what it is or why it all of a sudden appeared and thought it might be trouble.

It sounds like it is safe but just has a pesky icon?

Homegroup is a nifty feature with Windows 7 if you want to be able to share files and folders between computers. You can safely delete the icon. It's also very easy to enable and disable Homegroup.

Enable or Disable Homegroup

Here's a thread with a few explanations of why it might suddenly appear:

Thanks to you all. The icon disappeared by itself.

How is anybody to know of this "nifty feature"? I don't see it listed in program files or anywhere so how would you know you have it and how do you use it?

I am just glad to know it was not something harmful to my computer.

Ah, now I found it. I have no use for it though since my other computers are not Win7, but nice to know it's there Draclvr.

I didn't do any of those things Jenny.

And MaG, I should have said I Binged, not I Googled.
