If, just once, one would say aloud, "Okay, I should just calm down and search everything here for a clue," I might be less inclined to want to yell at him/her to get a move on and stop fiddling with everything in sight.
Ugh! I gladly do without those sorts of comments. I want to play the game, not listen to the protagonist blabbing about obvious things I can see for myself. If they're going to talk, it should be important to the story or offer a clue to a puzzle.
I was impressed with Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray. The protagonist would breathe fast when something frightened him or angered him, kinda cool.
I hate that kind of thing. I don't want to listen to the character breathing. I always end up telling them to stop breathing. I can do my own breathing. I don't like hearing footsteps either. They're nearly always inappropriate for what's being stepped on.
