I got it yesterday and have played through twice already. It's extraordinary. Certainly not for everyone, but as an experience in itself it is a beautiful one. Worth replaying over for different visuals and narration.

Just finished.
Well... it is a unique experience and a unique game, that's for sure. However, it is really hardly a game as such. And I did find it incredibly short.

The graphics, atmosphere and sounds (+voice acting) were simply superb. I would pay a lot more to get a lengthy game (with puzzles and all) that feels like that.

I wasn't as amazed as you, Ladycav, but I'm happy I purchased it. I will replay it sometime soon.

:-)

IT's a stunning looking game. And quite realistic in that you're rather walking at normal speed...no running allowed or "speed ups". It does feel a bit sluggish because of this, but just...the visuals...beautiful! THe music is also incredible, and the narrator script and voice are also pleasing.
Relatively quick DL from Steam...no virus issues...
One nitpick I have is...no saves? Really? I have to start each level from scratch? That seems excessive.I"m not a programmer, but why dont ALL game devs..indie or otherwise...include save slots...or at least auto-saves...nowadays?
I fell in the water trying to swim to the abandoned ship, and apparently drowned as I couldnt swim anywhere or see anything,so I had to restart chapter 1....a save slot would've been nice before this happened!
Anyway,still a lonely,immersive game...just my style!

***Edited to add...THIS is one reason why I LOVE LOVE LOVE the GB site and forum. I just happened to log onto it,saw a post about Esther (which I hadnt been aware of)...and an hour later I'm playing it! Thanks Carla and GB!

EDIT: WOw...the caverns...I have honestly never seen a more beautiful area in a game. Stunning.I've been playing this for almost 3 hours straight and my shoulders are aching! This is one heck of a beautiful game.

It changed my life. Before playing it my life was Gray and sad. It had no meaning.
Now everything is amazing and wonderful. I cannot imagine life without it.

( crazy )

Beautiful game, wonderful graphics, I am a water person and the waves move even from a distance.
One little problem-I can only play in short bursts as I get motion sickness. Tried to move slowly, but this doesn't help much. crazy sick

So beautiful! just bought it tonight and have been wandering around just looking at everything, almost feeling the wind in my hair as I move. Very nice! I only wish I could pick up things and bring them with me, lol, but like others have said it's not that kind of game.

Still, I'm intrigued by the dialog and what's to come, and by the beautiful graphics. I feel like if Myst were made today, these are the kind of graphics that might be used. SWOON! smile

Tracy, trying to forget about Skyrim and finding it's not that hard to do in a place like this!

Anyone else seen any of the ghosts that wander around the island? They appear every now and then, although if you look directly at them they disappear. You have to pan away a little.

The water effects are simply gorgeous. And those CAVES. hearts

Rushes, check out the steam forum,
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1346

They have lengthy discussions about that and a lot of other things. Reading there made me want to play the game again.

And they obtained all this just by word of mouth!

Quote:
DEAR ESTHER PROFITABLE IN UNDER 6 HOURS

Experimental indie game pays off financial backing in just five and a half hours, selling more than 16,000 units on day one

15 FEBRUARY 2012 - Experimental indie game Dear Esther recouped its financial backing from Indie Fund in just five and a half hours, soaring to the top of Steam's sales charts in the process.

thechineseroom and Robert Briscoe's first-person walk-'em-up released yesterday to critical acclaim, picking up glowing reviews from the likes of Edge, IGN, Eurogamer and PC Gamer.

Less than 24 hours after its release, Dear Esther has already sold over 16,000 units on Steam.

Originally a mod for Half-Life 2 developed as part of a research project at the University of Portsmouth, this recrafted version of Dear Esther boasts gorgeous vistas constructed by Robert Briscoe, a former environment artist on Mirror's Edge.

Jessica Curry's ethereal soundtrack, which has already picked up plaudits and award nominations, is available to purchase via Amazon*.

Dear Esther is a ghost story, told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional gameplay, the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of a Hebridean island, of who you are and why you are there.

Fragments of story are randomly uncovered when exploring the various locations of the island, making every each journey a unique experience.
