If anyone knows, what is supposed to be done in the "black" areas? I know you have to light the torches and make any match 3's you can, but anything else? Thanks for your help.

It's been a while since I've played this game, but to the best of my recollection that's what you need to do with the black areas: illuminate the torches and make any matches that you can.

There is a walkthrough here that may help. I could not however find anything in there specifically related to black squares.
