Anyone paid attention to Kingdoms of Amalur the Reckoning ? It's supposed to be released today. I played about 10 minutes of the demo and it seems like it will be a good game. Great graphics. The controls are similar to Skyrim.

I still am having a lot of fun with Skyrim but have Reckoning in mind for my next RPG.

My son was really impressed with the demo and can't wait to play it. Apparently one of the developers of this game was also involved in the development of Morrowind. wave

Thanks Oldman, I think it looks amazing. I hoped I would be finished with Skyrim by now so I could snag Amalur, but Life had other plans.

I do plan to play it, but have a feeling it will be awhile until I can. wave

Marian, there were several famous folks involved in development, including R. A. Salvatore. puppy

Ken Rolston who was the senior lead (just under Todd Howard in rank) was indeed involved in Morrowind. He alter joined Studios ro work with R.A. Salvatore who has created the world. [I'll see if I can dig up a link where this is confirmed].

Via rpgwatch comes a thread on what we know about KO:A Reckoning. http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1061125901#post1061125901

A snip:

Quote:
The combat in Reckoning is its most distinctive feature. Despite the traditional trappings of the rest of the game, Big Huge promises combo-based, action-RPG combat more along the lines of God of War, with the occasional quick-time event. This is the kind of game in which a mid-air target falls more slowly if it’s being shot full of arrows, and you’ll have to make nimble use of the block and dodge buttons. There’ll also be a special time-slowing/finishing moves.

Players will use the XP they accumulate to unlock Abilities in three trees: Might, Finesse, and Sorcery. Rather than being to locked into any one tree, however, players will be able to select whichever Abilities they prefer, creating unique hybrid classes, in addition to classic RPG archetypes.

There's a nice and rather lengthy 4 page interview up on Gama Sutra with the game's lead world designer, Colin Campbell.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6692/building_the_world_of_reckoning.php

A snip:

Quote:
With open world games, I don't know if it's a weakness, but a challenge is environmental storytelling. Have you given any thought to environmental storytelling? Because I know R.A. Salvatore, in particular, is big on world building and society building.

CC: Yeah. It's one of the things we really strive for. We built a game where you can run along the path and veer off... The main quest is telling you to go in one direction, and you can veer left and explore the tiny shack that's been destroyed, finding quests that lead you down to the dark, spider-infested forest.

So, we try to build a world that ebbs and flows, and has moments of large visual storytelling -- like I said, a whole forest that's spider-infested, and then, like, a tiny overturned cart you find.

Oh, and if you wonder if your pc can handle this game, here are the recommended requirements:

Quote:
RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

OS: Windows XP with Service Pack 3
Windows Vista with Service Pack 2
Windows 7 with Service Pack 1

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad (or equivalent) running at 2.4GHz or greater
AMD Phenom X4 (or equivalent) running at 2.6GHz or greater

RAM: At least 3 GB for Windows XP
At least 4 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7

Disc Drive: CD/DVD ROM drive (required for installation only), 8x or faster CD/DVD drive

Hard Drive: At least 10.5 GB of free space

Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 1GB RAM or better
ATI Radeon HD4850 1GB RAM or better
Supporting Pixel Shader 3.0

DirectX: 9.0c Compatible

I agree that this game looks amazing and probably plays out amazingly as well. I'll try to see if I can find some reviews. First, I wish I had a machine that was cable of playing this game, second I hope that I got a new job someday and third, I still have many a game to play on this 8 year XP machine of mine.

Can somebody help me with this please? I downloaded the demo from Steam, but it must have downloaded incorrectly. I get some graphics, the introduction, customizing the character, but not the game itself. My screen remains blank, but I have audio. The subtitles however print on each other. I can't find the demo to uninstall and that is my problem. It seems to be in the Steam folder with everything else Steam. If I remove this whole folder will I be able to get back on Steam? Thanks

Fildil, according to the Steam forum, you can't uninstall them. You can however move them into a separate category by right clicking on the game and then on "set category." I am sooooo not tekkie but I think if you remove the entire Steam folder, you would need to redownload Steam to use it again, but that is strictly my opinion. Have you tried contacting Steam? Or a reboot?

Thanks Karsten, your help is invaluable wave

Thanks for directing me to the forums L4L, they helped me fix the problem of my blank screen and I was able to play the demo.

Sorry it took me so long to reply L4l. I enjoyed what I played of the demo but I'm wondering if I should get this game. The panning is very quick and this makes me seasick sometimes. I didn't get sick in the demo, but I didn't play for a great length of time.

I saw that the game is now on shelves at Gamestop and Best Buy (probably Walmart and Compusa as well but I didn't check them).

I thought of getting it from the brick and mortars but will hold off for a while since I am still really immersed in Skyrim.

I will be playing this game though.

Well I finally got around to taking a break from my Reckoning game play and decided that I would make some comments.

I've had a couple of days into this game and have done a few of the main quests and several side quests. As far as the quests it is similar to most RPG's the quest givers are located on your map with a ! icon and you talk to them and obtain the quest and can get to them at your convenience.

There are also factions in this game which are similar to the Thieves, Mages and Fighter guilds in other games just called something different with a complete set of quests of their own.

The movement is the same as in Skyrim and Dungeon Siege and many others. The combat takes some getting used to but I've become acquainted with it now and am fairly comfortable with it. It is mostly pressing left mouse key to use your weapon and right mouse key for spells. As you progress in the game you build various combat moves and magic skills.

As was said earlier in this thread it does remind me a lot of Fable. There are also similarities to the Dragon Age games as well accept that you have no companions.

There's a thing called reckoning (hence the name I would guess) that I still haven't completely figured out. It just happens as your meter fills up and then I press the X key and the game more or less does the rest and directs you to press a couple more keys during the FMV. It looks pretty cool but I'm not sure how to build up this power or how to really use it but it's there.

Overall I like the game as much as I did Fable, Dragon Age origins and Dungeon Siege, but not as much as I enjoyed Witcher, Morrowind and Skyrim.

It is an enjoyable game and I would recommend it to all who like these type games. If you enjoyed Fable then you should enjoy this game.

Well it's back to my side quests. I'm presently involved in a faction called Travelers which seems to be the equivalent of the Thieves guild in other games.

Oldman, I will join your thread. I missed it when I started the other one.

Your fatemeter builds up when you slug away at your foes. When it's full a blue flame appears beside the bar. This indicates you can press x. I hardly use it except when there is a boss fight and a prompt comes up to press x.

This game also reminds me of the game called Fate.
