This really doesn't have anything to do with games but I thought I'd ask. smile More and more, when I try to view a video of a game (the latest time was on the Amanita website and the video was a trailer for Botanicula), I get a blank screen that's bright green. I see that a lot on YouTube, too.

Is this because of a regional lockout? Or am I missing something? My Adobe Flash is updated (though not Air) and I can't think what else it might be.

Gil.

Funny, I seen the same issue as of late - I'm assuming it a video codec issue.

Hmmm... no such issue for me. I just happened to come from the Amanita website where I was watching the Botanicula trailer - prebought it at GOG and can't wait till tomorrow!

I'm running Windows 7 in a new installation which I'm slowly rebuilding (thanks to Carbonite) after a hard drive crash.

Traveler - does this look like the problem you're having?

Was this trailer a YouTube video? If so perhaps this will help?

YouTube Green Screen

Someone posted what may be a fix ***here***:
Quote:
1) Right click on youtube video.
2) Click Settings
3) I get these tabs: Display, Privacy, Local Storage, Microphone and Camera.
4) Under Display, I UNCHECKED the "Enable hardware acceleration"

Edit:
Looks like Cruise's link says to check hardware acceleration, so whichever way is giving the problem, try the other way.

Hi, Jenny, Boy are you fast! Your post came onscreen just as I clicked the "submit" button after editing my post in an attempt to help Traveler with her green screen.

So, could you please check out the link to the green screen I provided, Jenny, and tell me what you think of it?

This week for one of my computer classes in networking, we're on chapter 11 in the textbook, which talks about VoIP and video over IP, so this is a reason that I got interested in this thread, and out of curiosity, Jenny, according to the set of video over IP protocols that I learned about this week from that chapter, what do you think is causing Traveler's issue with the green screen?

What specific protocol or set of protocols do you think are at fault?

How does -

1) the solution you posted fix them?

2) the solution I linked to fix them?

Cruise,
As I said in my edit above, one link says to enable hardware acceleration in Flash and the other says to disable it. So maybe one way works best for some computers and the other way works best for other computers. Whichever way it is, it's a Flash issue. My guess it's a problem between Flash and certain video drivers.

I don't know which protocol Flash uses. I assume it's RTMFP, which seems to be the Protocol Adobe developed
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-media-enterprise/rtmfp-faq.html
I don't think this is a protocol issue.

cruise02, thanks!!

For me, unchecking Enable hardware acceleration worked. Never would have thought of it, though, without your help.

Nvidia drivers, in case it does matter.

Gil.

Wow, I just learned something today about being a tech and helping people by fixing their computers/network transmission today just from your thread alone, Traveler!

Also, was glad to have have helped fix your problem.

Also from that Flash link about the protocols that you provided, Jenny, I recall learning about UDP in previous chapters from this semester's textbooks, UDP is used to send messages over the internet in the form of datagrams, so aren't messages such as these that are transmitted on gaming forums where people reply to others' posts by typing their message in the textbox & clicking submit or email message text that is typed into email messages a datagram that is sent over UDP (User Datagram Protocol)?

Also, I've learned that UDP works in the Transport layer of the OSI model, which is layer 4, and I know by heart that routers work at the Network layer or Layer 3, and MAC addressing works at the Data Link layer, which is Layer 2 of the OSI model.

Usually UDP is used for time-critical applications, like streaming video files. UDP datagrams are much smaller than TCP packets, and do not have error checking at the Transport Layer. Forum messages aren't time critical the way streaming applications are. There are certain protocols that use UDP, such as TFTP and SNMP, which you should learn about in your classes.

TCP packets include error checking, which slows down the transfer but resends any packets which are dropped during the transfer. With UDP datagrams, any error checking is done at Layer 7 by the program itself. Think about what's important -- if you miss a few datagrams out of a streaming YouTube video, it might cause some artifacting, but it's not going to matter much when it comes to viewing the video as a whole. If you were using TCP for the video, it would be halting and choking all the while you were watching it (even worse than some YouTube videos already do). And if you're posting a forum message, you'd want the error checking to make sure your message is posted properly and doesn't have corrupted text.
