4 married couples: Art, Ben, Cam and Don with wives Ann, Beth, Carla and Diane, (not necessarily in that order, like Art not necessarily married to Ann) are in Cam's recreation room, having a drinky-poo and shooting the breeze.
There is a dart board in the room; a few games are played: one against one.
Ben (likes stats!) records who played who on the back of his cigarette pack.
After they're finished, Ben updates 'em with these statistical gems: 1: you 3 guys all played over 3 games each 2: you 4 ladies all played under 4 games each 3: none of you 7 played the same number of games 4: none of us guys played against our better halves 5: nobody had the same opponent more than once 6: Cam, you played twice as many games as my wife 7: Don, you played twice as many games as Beth 8: Art, you played as many games as Beth plus Carla 9: Diane, you won more games than Ann
Who is married to who, praytell ?

From 2,3 the ladies played 0,1,2,3 games each (not necessarily in that order)
From 1,3,4,5 Art,Cam,Don played 4,5,6 games each (not necessarily in that order) Don't know how many Ben played at this point (4,5, or 6)
From 6,7 Cam played 4or6, Don Played 4or6, Art played 5, Ben's wife(?) played 2or3, Beth played 2or3
From 8,9 Carla played 2or3 and is Ben's wife, Diane played 1, Ann played 0
Either Cam or Don (whichever played 6 games) must be married to Ann and also have played Diane (who played 1). So Art (who played 5) must be married to Diane (since he played both Beth and Carla).
So far we have Art is married to Diane Ben is married to Carla
Ben couldn't have played 5or6 games becuse he would have had to play his wife, so Ben played 4 games, Carla played 2, Beth played 3, Cam played 4, Don played 6
Finally, since Don played 6, he must be married to Ann, and Cam is married to Beth.

Ben can only have played 3 games; his wife also.
(H6 = husband who played 6 games, likewise W3 ...) H6 played Ben, H5, H4, W3, W2, W1 (W1 now out) H5 played Ben, H6, H4, W3, W2 (W2 now out) H4 played Ben, H6, H5, W3 (W3 now out) So Ben played 3 games (no more wives available!).
H6's wife = W0 H5's wife = W1 H4's wife = W2 So Ben's wife = W3
I'll let you have the fun of wrapping it up!
BTW, this is a version in disguise of Rog's handshakes problem.

OK, I made the wrong assumption from 1. that Ben played over 3 games. Denis, if I don't have the correct answer, please just tell me that. By telling me, Hmmm...I don't quite have that... Can you give a quick "how"? it made me think that you were not sure of the answer, and forces me to go thru my whole logic chain (making the same wrong assumption) and writing it all down. Plus, it doesn't give anyone else a chance to find the correct answer.

Denis, if I don't have the correct answer, please just tell me that. You don't have the correct answer. I have the correct answer. Sincere apologies if I answered unclearly. I'm a bit confused by the "tone" of your post; I was simply trying to tell you "incorrect" as politely as I could.

Yes Sir. From now on, I'll do what others do: I'll include "show your work" IN THE INITIAL POST.
Anything else I can do for you?

Yes. Well I'll post my solution before I get in more trouble! Clues 1 to 5 do this: (H6 = husband who played 6 games, likewise W3 ...) H6 played Ben, H5, H4, W3, W2, W1 (W1 now out) H5 played Ben, H6, H4, W3, W2 (W2 now out) H4 played Ben, H6, H5, W3 (W3 now out) So Ben played 3 games (no more wives available!). H6's wife = W0 H5's wife = W1 H4's wife = W2 So Ben's wife = W3
Clues 6 to 9 are simply to assign names: 6: Cam, you played twice as many games as my wife
Since we know that Ben's wife played 3, then Cam = H6
7: Don, you played twice as many games as Beth
since 4 and 5 are left, only 4 is possible (5 can't be double), so Don = H4, and Beth = W2; by default, Art = H5.
8: Art, you played as many games as Beth + Carla
Since Art played 5, then Beth + Carla = 2 + 3; so Carla defaults to 3, hence W3 and Ben's wife, thus leaving Beth as Don's wife
9: Diane, you played more games than Ann only W0 and W1 are left, so Diane = W1, thus Art's wife, leaving Ann happily married to Cam.
RECAP: Art : Diane Ben : Carla Cam : Ann Don : Beth
And I'll tag the original with ye olde "thumbs up" to consider it over with.
