Hi smile

I have always liked all my computers to play the same two specific "sounds" .. one when logging-on to Windows and another when logging-off.

I had my Win95 machine, my Win98 machine and my WinXP all doing this without any problem simply by by transferring the sound files to each machine, putting the files in the appropriate place and then using "Sound" via "Control Panel" to link them to log-on and log-off.

[I no longer have a Win95 machine but my Win98 and WinXP do still use them.]

Well, now i'm trying to get my Win7 machine to do it also but although I can change the logging-on sound in Win7 to the one I want, I can't change the logging-off one woozy

Does anyone know how I might be able to do this, please ??

Cheers.

Looks like Microsoft made it incredibly difficult to do what should be a simple thing.

Here's a link that uses a 3rd party program called "Resource Hacker" to do it.

Most of the wave files are located in C:\Windows\Media - create a folder under Media and copy your wave files there.

To select them, Right Click the desktop and select Personalize - type Sound in the search box (look for Change System Sounds). Peruse to the sound you want to change and press the Browse button... point to the folder you created above.

Hi - And thanks very much for your replies smile

Winfrey .. Your link only took me to the Google Search Bar woozy

Jenny100 .. I've already changed the "log-on" sound in the usual way - via Control Panel/Sounds.
It's the "log-off" sound that's the problem rolleyes

InlandAZ .. Your directions are slightly different to those I've already tried so I'll definitely give them a shot. But tomorrow.
My brain is thoroughly frazzled right now lol

Sorry Mad, I misread your post. I thought you wanted to change the Windows Startup sound, which is different from the logon sound.

Mad, using either Sounds in Control Panel or right clicking on your desktop, you should still be able to change any sound you want.

When I right click on my desktop and chose Personalize, I'm taken to another window. In this window I can set Themes, sound, screen saver, and others things I can't remember at the moment.

At the bottom of this window are some icons, one which is sound. Left clicking on this one takes me to the Sound window where if I scroll down to Window Login or Window Logoff, I can select either and change the sounds. Left click one to highlight it, then go up towards the top and click the down arrow to choose the sound you want. If you don't find the right .wav file, then at the bottom you can browse to locate the file.

If you use Control Panel to access Sounds, once you open Sounds, click on the Sound tab and you're at the same Sound window. The procedure is the same as I described above. Once you find the .wav file you want, you can test it by clicking on the Test button, click on Apply and you're set.

Hi again smile

I have an apology to make - particularly to Jenny100 !!

When I started this thread I had been messing about with Sounds for ages and getting pretty brain frazzled. And consequently gave completely the wrong info. I am so sorry blush

It IS the Windows Startup Sound that I'm trying to change. It's the Windows Exit sound that I changed with no trouble.

But to change the Startup Sound requres a completely different box of tricks - as Jenny100 has pointed out eek

So I think I'll have to get my Son in Law to attempt it. As it looks way too complicated for me.

But thank you all so much for responding. I appreciate all the help I'm given here at Gameboomers.

Cheers.

Because I was so annoyed at there being such a faff to merely change a sound, I emailed Microsoft Support and asked for "instructions" lol

And today I've been told that instructions WILL be sent shocked

It sounds, though, that a change of audio drivers might be involved so it will still be a "Son in Law" job yes

Just thought I'd let you know grin

I think you'll have to wait for your Son-in-Law, Mad. There's no easy way to change the startup sound because they integrated the wav file into a dll.

Good luck Mad, I never tried that. You can always do what I do, leave your speakers turned off until you need them.

Hi oldmariner smile

I want to "keep my set". Not turn anything off !! lol

I've managed to have all my computers play the same Windows Startup and Exit "sounds" since I first got Win95 all those years ago - and I want my Win7 machine to play them too.

Why Microsoft have chosen to make this so difficult is a mystery.
What does it matter to them which of their sounds I play as long as it IS one of their's ??

Darned maddening but I've not yet given up.

Cheers.
