Wondering what would cause my other xp to run slow when I'm using the enternet. Would it be cpu,ram or my graphic card. This is what I have on my pc.

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
Memory: 2040MB RAM
Page File: 319MB used, 3616MB available
Thanks
Richard

Viruses?
Slow Internet connection?

Assuming you have XP, your processor speed and memory are fine.

A slow Internet connection has nothing to do with your computer -- unless your network card is bad.

What speed are you paying your ISP for?
If you run a broadband test at
http://www.speedtest.net/
or
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
how fast does it say your connection is?

If you use wireless, there are a host of other problems that could cause a slow connection. Many things can cause interference with the wireless signal.

I have two computers xp.
the fast one is.
ping 37-ms
download speed-44.37 mbps
upload speed-5.42

the slow one is
ping 27 ms
download speed-44.91 mbps
upload speed-5.45 mbps

The two of them are about the same speed. It has to be the computer don't you think.
Thanks Jenny.

kjos, for your reference, my speeds right now are:

ping 25 - ms
download - 4.84 mbps
upload - 1.45 mbps

Since I would sell my firstborn for your internet speeds (sorry, Jason!), the problem is not your internet connection.

It looks like you don't have a slow Internet connection after all. If one of your computers is slow when you access the Internet, there must be another reason.

What web browser are you using? IE? Firefox? Chrome? Something else?

Are you sure you don't have a virus on the slow computer? How full is the hard drive? Have you emptied your Internet cache recently?

It must be my hard drive.
Pretty small---37.2 GB Hard drive
free space--17.1 GB
used space--20.1 GB
Would it make much of a difference to put a bigger HD? I'm using IE. I checked and found no virus

It could be the hard drive -- not because it's small but because a drive that size must be quite old by now. A new drive with a fresh install of Windows XP would probably run quite a bit faster.

It would run faster, but... it also depends on the chipset. Does this PC support UDMA at ATA 100 or ATA 133? If you've got a model number we can look it up for you.

I'm guessing that your interface is IDE/EIDE because of the hard drive size.

Where are you buying a computer with XP on it from? This is a very old PC and is a form factor they call a "micro-tower." At the most it has an old GMA 3000 graphics chip in the motherboard. Do not expect it to play even newer casual games. Unless your finances are extremely limited, this is not a good computer for a gamer.

There are no AGP expansion slots on the motherboard. According to the docs there is a single PCIe x1 slot and 2 full length PCI slots. The power supply is 300 watts, so that would be another limitation to consider if you upgraded the graphics card.

Here's a link to the specs -

I don't know if this pertains or if it would help but I had used Internet Explorer forever and swore by it until I started to experience problems associated with it and very slow and erratic behaviors in the last year. As an experiment I downloaded and installed FireFox with much improvement and speeds back to normal. Strange, I did a test with opening the same web page in each browser and IE was a lot slower than FireFox. So slow in some instances as to lock up the browser.

I've had similar experiences, but it seems to be limited to a small number of Web sites. In general, most of them don't embed scripting that can be read in the page source, so it hard to say, but I'd suspect it's just a poorly coded script.

None the less, it's just another good reason to have multiple browsers installed.

Given the age of the computer kjos is saying is slow - the 40 gb hard drive - could it still be running IE 6? Has it been kept up to date with SP 3 for XP which at the very least would installed IE 7?

I worked on a computer about 6 months ago that was still running IE 7 and it barely worked on the internet. Once I upgraded IE to 8, then it worked much faster.

Well, that shoots that theory! Just thinking out loud. Unless you have a really limited budget, I would suggest a actual new computer with new hardware and Windows 7. You can get a low end one for $454 at eCollegePC.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_sector
Originally Posted By: the Wikipedia
When a sector is found to be bad or unstable by the firmware of a disk controller, the disk controller remaps the logical sector to a different physical sector. In the normal operation of a hard drive, the detection and remapping of bad sectors should take place in a manner transparent to the rest of the system and in advance before data is lost.

There are two types of remapping by disk hardware; P-LIST (Mapping during factory production tests) and G-LIST (Mapping during consumer usage by disk microcode).[1]

There are a variety of utilities that can read the SMART information to tell how many sectors have been reallocated, and how many spare sectors the drive may still have.[2] Because reads and writes from G-list sectors are automatically redirected (remapped) to spare sectors it slows down drive access even if data in drive is defragmented. If the G-list is filling up, it is time to replace the drive.

In other words, if your hard drive has enough remapped sectors, it will be slowed down, even though the hard drive continues to work.

If your hard drive has SMART capability, check to see how many sectors have been remapped. If the hard drive has to get part of a file from a different part of the hard drive, it will slow things down. The more sectors have been remapped, the slower the drive. Defragging with the windows defrag tool will not fix a slowdown due to remapped sectors, though there may be some 3rd party utilities that do.

If there is no slowdown EXCEPT when using IE on the Internet, then the problem is IE. But check out other web browsers to see if they run faster or if they have the same problem. If they have the same slowdown as IE, then you know the problem isn't IE.

Another possibility is if you have an antivirus that is checking everything on the webpages you visit before allowing IE to load them. If that's the case, the speed of your computer will matter because your antivirus will be using processing power for scanning.
