I'm looking for a game that is more intellectually challenging than most shooters and that has a Cold War spy theme or at least has that feel to it.

What I'm trying to describe is not the sort of game that interests me but I vaguely recall there was a recent one.

Shooter elements are fine. The teenager in question is currently playing the one that has David Petraeus and Oliver North as characters and the USS Barack Obama as a ship. He's also playing another in which the player takes the role of head of security for a corporation in a world where I gathered nation states have dissolved into multiple corporate fiefdoms.

Any thoughts? I'm looking for worlds as described in the the first paragraph with an emphasis on the intellectual and intuitive challenges adventure gamers treasure.

The recent game set in the Cold War that I recall is 1953: KGB Unleashed. Flotsam has reviewed it here.

There may be others, but this one springs to mind.

Mass Effect games, maybe? Though not directly cold war games, they do have some shooter element in them (or a lot). It's about exploring the galaxy etc.

A game like Obsidian's Alpha Protocol could also be a good idea. You play as Thornton, a spy, who go on mission. Your dialogue options and how you react to them decide hoe the outcome of the story will be.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution maybe as well? Agreat deal of thinking is required here as well as there are some shooter elements in the game.

Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas could also be good games for him. Again, thinking is required and shooter elements are also in these games.

What about the Assasin's Creed games? Sneaking, thinking and no, not shooting, but stealth etc. are required.

The original Bioshock game as well, I think.

I can't recall any adventure games set in the backdrop of the cold war, but maybe others can help here?

Adventure gaming is fun smile

Thanks, Becky. That was the one. Sounded too grim for me.

Karsten, I'll give the others a look.

HAve you looked at "Spycraft" on GOG.com, Looks like just what you want!

"What's cool about it:

William Colby (a former CIA director) and Oleg Kalugin (former Major General of the KGB) reveal secrets from the “great game” of espionage.
Master the tools of a CIA operative, surveil double agents, and intercept radio transmissions to infiltrate a web of rogue spies.
Actual CIA footage along with Hollywood actors portray the intrigue and skulduggery.

Overview:

In Spycraft: The Great Game, you take on the role of a CIA operative who must attempt to unravel an............" sherlock

Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II are the original stealth games. I has more action, but the main objective is sneaking and stealing.

No tips re: cold war I'm afraid.

Thanks for Spycraft and Thief. I wish Spycraft were a bit newer, sounds perfect otherwise.

Have you considered Memento Mori? It's more modern day than Cold War, but large chunks of it are set in Russia.

I had forgotten Memento Mori. I'll look into it.
