First, determine a four-letter solution to one of the numbered clues below, and then add a letter and rearrange the five letters to form a new word which, ends with the letter "E", and solves one of the clues from the second set of lettered clues. When we've solved all of the clues, the first letters of the five letter answers will spell out a familiar quote from an old silver screen favorite I'll solve #1 to start us off  1. A Chief magistrate is a "doge"...and then if I add the letter "I" to doge and rearrange letters I come up with the solution of "dogie" which is the answer to clue x --> Motherless calf  = 1. Chief magistrate = 2. Equipment = 3. Circuit = 4. Pleasing = 5. Scot for ewe = 6. Unit of measure 7. Barren = 8. Dog pest = 9. Computer expert 10. Grassland = 11. I ___ at the office = 12. Garner = 13. German art song = 14. Ten cent coin = 15. Mirth = 16. Form of energy = 17. Petitions for redress = 18. Hearing devices = 19. Calf meat = 20. Sugar source = 21. Secluded valley = 22. Honey source = 23. Smile greatly = 24. Story = 25. Chair = 26. Martin was one = 27. Bridle = a. Legendary story = b. Kitchen cooker? = c. Concur = d. Mother of pearl = e. Light anchor = f. Shaping machine = g. Australian yeti = h. Perhaps i. Swiss call (alternate spelling) = j. Leap rhythmically = k. Double birdie = l. Active = m. Path = n. Magazine copy o. Look into = p. Curly .. you are on track with "tale" for 24 but not by adding an "h" Michele .. you are on track with "dime" for 14 but not by adding an "a" All other solutions are spot on   (edited a typo on my part)

Curly, you Jema and Cue are correct on this round. Your 24/f although a possible solution does not fit this total solution set as the "f" part is used with another "numbered" clue Yes, Michele did use an "a" .. typo on my part

Michele 14/n although a possible solution does not fit the puzzle's total solution set (my answer key) as the "n" part is actually used in the 17/n pair solution which ManXman just solved Michele 21/v although a possible solution does not fit the puzzle's total solution set (my answer key) as the "v" part is used with another "numbered" clue .. your 4-letter 'glen' for #21 is correct and you have found the correct additional letter to add (the letter 'a') you just need to rearrange your 5 letter word to find the correct solution for the proper letter-clue answer. In reality, some of the 4-letter solutions can have different letters added to them allowing multiple solutions for two or more of the 5-letter, 'lettered' clues. With all that said, the 5-letter solution set can only be created one way to properly spell out the quote from an old silver screen favorite .. does this make sense? ManXman .. 17/n is correct
