Hi there!

I'm back to bug you guys again.. razz
The whole little pallawa with the burnt out VRAM ended up in me upgrading my GPU to a GTX 660 ti, and now it's just my horrible old WD conventional HD that is holding my system back from a 7.6 Windows rating, to a nasty old 5.9 rating, and anyway, i really really can't handle working with such a slow system anymore, so i've decided to go the SSD route.

Now i need to decide between an OCZ Vertex 3 240 Gb and a Vertex 4 120 Gig.

The bench comparison is here. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/352?vs=627
Only, i'm not sure how to read it. How important is read times and write times, and random whatever times? Which one will help make my apps like Word and Sigil and Drawing/painting apps and Frapps and 2 or 3 browsers at a time (and VERY importantly Windows Explorer) etc etc being all open and working, matter less, (and help them work faster) and what will influence game loading times?
I use a lot of apps at a time, and i play games like Witcher 2 and Risen 2, both which of present with really slow load times currently.

Honestly, i can go make a cuppa while Witcher 2 loads. At first i thought the game was broken or something, but no, it's just my slow hd.

Oh, here are my current specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.110408-1633)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: System manufacturer
System Model: System Product Name
BIOS: BIOS Date: 02/05/10 19:13:52 Ver: 08.00.10
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 8172MB RAM
Page File: 6009MB used, 10333MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
lay Devices
---------------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 660 Ti
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1183&SUBSYS_35521458&REV_A1
Display Memory: 4042 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1994 MB
Shared Memory: 2047 MB
Current Mode: 1600 x 900 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor Name: Generic PnP Monitor
Monitor Model: SyncMaster
Monitor Id: SAM0521

etc, etc.

My mobo is a http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8P67/ It does support SATA 3.

Now, let's imagine the price of the product is not an object- which SSD do i choose? The bigger but rather slower Vertex 3 (the question is- how much slower for my purposes) or the smaller Vertex 4?

Help will be much appreciated. smile

My first question was going to be if your MB supported SATA 3.

This is a really good article on SSDs at Tom's Hardware. I like reading the interpretations of the benchmarks because sometimes I'm not exactly sure what they mean in the real world.

Tom's Hardware's SSD Hierarchy Chart

I would get the most GB you can afford. The difference between even a slower SSD and your HDD will be significant. I have a 60 GB OCZ Agility 3 as a boot drive for my Windows 7 installation. I love it, but it's always a struggle to keep data, temp and other assorted files off it and on my 500 GB HDD. It's easy enough to point all your installations etc. to the data drive, but stuff always seems to creep onto the SSD. Plus, you lose the main advantage of having some of your favorite programs on the SSD - such as Witcher 2.

One nice thing about keeping data and programs on a separate hard drive is if you ever have to reinstall the OS, you don't lose anything.

Thanks, Draclvr. I think you are confirming there what I wanted to hear. I think I'm going to go for the Vertex 3 240 gigs. Definitely.

Thanks for helping me make up my mind!
