Hi Mad I've played M&M8 several times. It's similar to M&M6, but easier, IMO. You start the game with one character, but you recruit more as you go along. I usually start with a necromancer, because he can cast the same spells as a sorcerer in the earlier games. You can add a knight, cleric, vampire, & another necromancer (with promotions for each) as you go along. You can dismiss any character you've added at any time, except for your main character. The best thing about the game, I think, is that you can add up to 3 dragons to your party. They are VERY powerful. I'd say give it a try. I've been thinking about playing it again. Right now I'm playing M&M6 & having a hard time in Kriegspire Castle. I bought it from GOG & they fixed the bug that gave unlimited gold, so I'm having a hard time with only 200,000 gold!

Well, I installed it this afternoon and had a bit of a play but so far I don't like it as much as M&M6. It seems much more "restrictive" somehow Of course, I'll play some more before I might actually throw in the towel but it will have to get better (or probably I will have to get better) pretty smartish !!

Whilst both games start out in pleasant enough villages, looney4labs, to my mind the one in M&M 6 certainly offered better shops. And the first enemies weren't so madly difficult to beat, either !! Of course, it could very easily be my poor combat talents holding me back but I do feel much more "pressured" at this start of M&M 8 than I ever did at the start of M&M 6 !! [So maybe I should have said "pressured" rather than "restricted" in my previous post.] But I will certainly have to "run away and live to fight another day" a lot more and for me, too much of that gets boring .... Even worse, I read somewhere that the Pirates here (the first enemies) constantly regenerate whereas in M&M 6 it was at least a year or more before anything regenerated - which was a massive bonus !! Obviously I'll have more tries but I'm definitely NOT over excited at this moment

It gets better, Mad. Once you get your whole party together, it's pretty much the same as the other games. I was able to avoid most of the pirates at the beginning. Collect the cleric Frederick & head for the big temple on the other island. There are lots of shops on Dagger Wound Island, but they're hard to find.

I agree, Looney. What I love about RPGs is how you get better as you go along. It's fun to come back later & wipe out those bad guys like they were insects.

Hi looney4labs and Barb Oh, yes !! I too enjoyed coming back, when stronger, to cause pandemonium against those who once terrorised me in M&M 6 Well, I've played a little further into M&M 8 now and found a few more shops and waded to another island. So some progress at least !! But wading across the water can bring my party close to death !! I definitely think I'm going to be much slower at "improving" in this game. In fact, as real time "passes as you play", after a fashion, I could very well end up a rather creaky old Hero Cheers. Mad

You don't have to go in the water, Mad. There are teleporters that will take you to the next island with the temple. Find frederick Talimere in one of the houses & he will have the artifact necessary to use the teleporters.
If you played M&M 6, you must be a pretty good fighter! I thought that game was hard! I've been playing it, & got all the way to doing VARN, but have a glitch that won't let me enter the place. So I can't finish it.I couldn't find a patch to fix it I thought getting it from GOG would solve the problem, but it didn't. Maybe I'll play M&M 8 too!

I found Frederick Talimere some time ago, Barb, but the only teleporters I've tried so far have just taken me to differents spots on the original island. That's why I tried "wading". I guess I'd better try some more !! And, oh !! [Now here's another laugh for you, looney4labs ] Although, yes, I love playing M&M 6, I've never actually made it to the end. It gets way too difficult for me in the last chapters. But I do always enjoy playing through as far as I can. Indeed .... I can probably count on one hand the RPGs I've managed to totally complete but that doesn't bother me if I'm having a good time !! And I won't even mention how often I decide to re-start one because I've suddenly fathomed better what I ought to be doing !!

I can't stand to not complete a game once I've gotten into it. I've finished M&M6 3 or 4 times before I ran into the bug & it is VERY hard. It wasn't until M&M7 that you could use Invisibility. As long as you're having fun, that's what counts!
The teleporter you should use is one of the 2 right in town. It does take you to a different place on the same island, but then you should take another teleporter to the island with the temple.

Mad, most of those games do get much harder near the end. I always want to know how the story ends, but really, I just have fun building up my character and learning new stuff, so I'm ok with not finishing as long as I'm having fun. Thanks Barb...glad you are able to help.

Hi Mad, You guys talking about Might and Magic 8 have got me looking for my CD. Did you have any trouble getting it to play of Windows 7, 64 bit? I have 6 & 7 installed, but I had to find some patches for them. Loved the Might & Magic games. Going to try to install it. Kay

Hi Kay,
I haven't tried to install MM8 on 7, but it did run on XP. I've had a problem just recently. I tried to install it this morning & it won't run. Mad has me wanting to play it, too, so I'll probably try it again. Hope you can find your disks, it'll be fun to play it together. I love all the M&Ms, too, except I and II.

I'm playing mine on my old Win98SE computer [It plays beautifully on that so I haven't bothered with either WinXP or Win7.] Anyway, thanks for more help and encouragement. And I'm certainly going to try the teleporting as it should be done, later

Hi Barb and Mad, Yay! I got it to run on my windows 7, 64 bit. First I installed it, then set it to run using software. It wouldn't work using the hardware. I also, set the compatibility mode for windows 98, put a check mark in disable visual themes, disable desktop composition, disable display scaling on high DPI settings, and I put a check mark to run this program as administrator. Then I went to the internet and found a patch and installed it. Then when it started, under options (where the save and load game is), I set the turn to smooth. It was already set to 16X. That was too fast. It was going to far when I would turn. It's working great now! Hope you have good luck with it too! Kay Thanks Looney4labs!

Hi Barb, I'm in the abandoned temple now. Made it through to the outside once, but had to rest. Came back to finish the job. What town is the dragon cave in to hire the dragon. I remember it but forgot how to get to it. Kay

You can pick up the first dragon in the dragon cave in Garotte Gorge. I got started this morning & finished the temple & got Ithilgore. Now I'm in the Smugglers' cave.

Well I think I'd better go hide in a corner !! I decided to start over and made much better progress (in general) this time but my first venture into the Abandoned Temple was an out and out fiasco Good job I had a save right before I went in because on reaching the bottom of the entrance stairs I was thoroughly "bested". I told you I was pathetic !!

The temple is very hard, Mad. I died many times in there. What characters do you have? Doing the temple I had Sophia, a necromancer, Fred, the cleric, and Simon Templar. My necro has ice bolt & Fred has Heal. I also got Bow for everyone.

Hi Barb I have five in my party : Me, a Knight Simon, the other Knight I met on my first visit to the Temple. A Necromancer from The Adventurer's Inn. A Vampire, also from the inn. And the Cleric. We have an assortment of rudimentary magics between us and now we each have either a bow or crossbow. Along the way as I've been gathering my team (and my wits !!) I've visited two other islands and done the "Disperse the Cure Potions Quest) and also (to gain experience and cash etc) engaged with bunches of Pirates all over the place. I guess I need to do more of the Pirate fighting but keep trying the Temple inbetween times until I make some headway in there Cheers. Mad

Thanks, Mad, but I'm not all that great at fighting. I enjoy the exploring and doing quests the most. I DO enjoy killing a few monsters once in a while, though!
Kay, have you got to Ravenshore yet? For some reason I'm having a really hard time in smuggler's Cove. I think I'll pop over to Alvar & see if I can find some good spells.

Hi Mad and Barb, Mad, your doing just great! I haven't done the cure potions quest yet either. I wanted to get the dragon, Ithilgore first. Now, I'm on my way back to do the quest. There are different things about all the Might and Magic games that I love. Thanks Barb for letting me know where to find him. I have him now and I can fly. Yay! Kay

Hi All, Smiley, I sure remember us all playing. I have Might & Magic 6, 7, and 8 installed. Will be ready for 9 in June, maybe. Mad and Barb, I've been playing all morning. Found out I forgot most of it. Trying not to form an alliance yet until I get Dragon Ability Grandmaster for Ithilgore. I don't know! I do know I'm not going to pick up Overdune just yet.

Hi all, Yay! I got Grandmaster Dragon Ability for Ithilgore. I messed up the last time and couldn't get it. I also made sure to train a Necromancer so I could get water to Grandmaster. No one in my party could get it the last time. Working on the Alliance now. Just found the spear Ebonest from the Mad Necromancer's Lab. That took awhile to be able to do. How are you guys doing?

i'm going very slowly, Kay. I know I need to do the Troll Tomb, but I keep getting killed. I'm also working on the minotaur place in Alvar. I think I can do that one eventually. I did get master in Water & Town Portal, so that helps a lot. I'm having a hard time keeping up my interest in this game. Mybe I've played it too much.

The hardest part being how to fit 200,000 gold pieces in your pockets?

Phew !! After reading all the achievements you folks manage in what seems like five or ten minutes, I think I'll have to re-name my character .. And "Sir Plodalong" sounds mightily apt I can take weeks to play through an Adventure - but RPGs ?? Those I count in months

Necros & clerics are pretty weak, but they're very important to a party. Mine get killed a lot, too. I have 2 necros now. Kay, did getting Ilsigore promoted help? I don't think I usually bother. I've cleared out the top part of the Ogre Fortress. now I have to do the hardest part. Then I'm going to make another try at the Troll Tomb. I'll be glad to get the second dragon, but I remember you have to have Fly to reach him, & he won't join until the party is at a higher level.
Mad, do you have a dragon yet?

Barb, It helped a little. I can stay up in the air a little longer, and a few more hit & damage points. My Necromancer and cleric are getting a little stronger now, but I still have to watch them close. I haven't tried another dragon! Where is it at? Hi Mad!

The 2d dragon, Brimstone, is in Yaardrake's Cave in Shadowspire. The cave is up in the mountains north of the city. According to my notes, you have to belevel 27-29 before he will join you. I'm about L15 now.

Hi Barb No, I don't have a dragon and have no idea how to acquire one !! I've been killing wasps most recently (although not visited anything that looks like their nest yet) and a few ogres as well I'm not sure at all though that I'm attempting stuff in a sensible order - I've just been going where the mood takes me Cheers. Thanks Barb! Found Brimstone, He's waiting at the Adventures Inn for me. I'll have to check him out later, two year old is here. I won't get to play much the next two days. I'll have to trade Cauri in and she has grandmaster merchant and Grandmaster disarm trap. I need both of those skills. will see if another can get them. Your doing great Mad, play the game and go where the mood takes you.

Hi guys! I finally finished the Troll Tomb, so now I'm ready to form an alliance.
Mad, sounds like you're doing well. Kay is right - just have fun! Getting the first dragon is easy - from Ravenshore, cross the bridge & head west along the shore until you come to Smugglers' Cove. Keep going past it & you'll come to Garrote Gorge. Go across the bridge, stay right & go into the mountains. Eventually you'll see a cave. Go on in, the dragons won't bother you. Ithildore's home is in there & he will join your party. I usually do Smuggler's Cove next - it's not too hard & you can finish one quest there & pick up another one.
Kay, do you remember where you got disarm trap? I don't have it yet, & I keep getting blown up!

Thanks for that info, Barb I did Smuggler's Cove a little while back so I know my way there. [BTW. I'm pretty sure I got "Disarm Trap" from The Grog & Grug on Dagger Wound Island.]

Hi Barb, Cauri already had Grandmaster in it when I picked her up in the wooded area of Murmurwoods and also she had Grandmaster in Merchant. She was also at a high level. She is the only one to trade for the dragon, Brimstone. Hate to give her up. This will be a tough decision. Chevon Wist in Dagger Wound Islands teaches expert disarm trap. Kelli Lightfingers in Alvar teaches master. Gareth Lifter in Regna teaches Grandmaster.

That is a tough decision. I'd drop Simon for Brimstone. He has no magic & Brimstone is a much better fighter. Thanks for the locations of the trainers. I lucked out & was able to get the disarm trap skill in Alvar.

looney, I'd love to get him, just don't know how. Barb, that's my problem. I don't have Simon in my party now. I found in my notes too late, that I should have started out with a Necromancer. Nobody in my party can get even expert disarm traps, so I guess I'll have to keep Cauri. I started out with a troll which I can't trade. Someone suggested it when I first played. In my party, I have a troll, Ithilgore, cauri, cleric, and a necromancer. Any suggestions?

I think if I were you, I'd drop Cauri & let someone else learn disarm trap. You could probably get by with Master disarm, if anyone could learn it. Does Cauri know any spells? I don't think I ever used her. your party sounds pretty good, anyway. You should be kicking butt with 3 dragons!

Barb, I don't have anyone who can even get disarm trap to expert. You can pick Cauri up early in the game soon as you get Ithilgore. She is a dark elf and level 50 to start and has master in all her spells but can't grandmaster the skills. Has Grandmaster in disarm trap and merchant too. Cauri is the wooded area of Murmurwoods, turned to stone. The monsters are two tough to start with but after I go to the Dantillion house in Murmurwoods and get the quest for Cauri and some stone to flesh scrolls. I fly over her, area x:15700, y:15000, then fly down and use the scroll and go back up without taking a hit. Then go to Alvar and finish the dark elf promotion quest. Then go to Adventure's Inn and pick her up.

Thanks, Kayc, I might look up Cauri, just for the xp. I don't have anyone who can master disarm, either. I did go back & picked up Simon, who can learn expert, but he's pretty much useless in battle. I've just been opening the chests & taking the damage. Nobody has been killed yet.
I'm doing the Balthar Lair now to get the minotaur alliance. I also allied with the necromancers. Have you made any alliances yet?

Hi Kayc, sounds like we like to ally with the same groups. I'm having to do the Balthazar Lair over again. I must have pulled a lever out of order, because I couldn't get to the last lever. At least it's one of my favorite parts of the game, and with 2 necromancers with Acid Burst, it's not too hard.
Are you having fun with your 2-year-old? Is that a grandchild? That's got to be the cutest age. Mine are all grown up now.

Not had very much playing time of late, Barb, but I am getting through some lower rated stuff - the latest being that of acquiring two of the cheeses in the "Three Cheeses Quest" - And I do now have a Dragon of my own I think I've cleared all the Centaurs and Dire wolves and most of the wasps and the few Ogres outside in the wilds but I'm not yet good enough to take on the Ogres in their lair. [So not quite the standard you and Kayc are at !! ] BTW. Two of my team have yellow spell books they can't use yet. Do they have to increase their "Learning" skill in order to be able to use them ??

Hi All, Mad, You're moving on and doing great in the game. If the person in your party doesn't have the skill, you have to buy the skill at the book shops where you buy the books, or if they have the skill, you just need to put points in the skill until you are expert, then you have to find the expert teacher. My guess is your person in the party doesn't have the skill yet. You don't put any skill points into learning yet unless you want to, because it doesn't let you learn the books. I haven't even raised Learning any from the people who already have it. The trouble I'm having is so many skills that each person can't get. No one in my party except Cauri can even get expert bow. Now I'm just going around improving the skills that the game says I can and going around doing the side quests. Barb, She my great Granddaughter. That's why when I sit on the floor playing Barbies with her, I have to have help getting up, but I love her very much and get plenty of exercise.

Hi Kayc Ahhhh !! Thank you !! I do have the skills for the "yellow" books I've acquired but not to "Expert" level yet. I've played a bit today though and have "upped" some of my weapons and armour - so I'm venturing into the Ogre Lair (by degrees) to gain some experience points [ Wow !! What a team you must make if you and Barb play a game together then !! ] Cheers. Mad

I think you're doing great, Mad. I did the Ogre Fortress the same way - go in, kill what I can, leave, rest, repeat.
You have a necromancer, don't you? I think the most important skills to have are water and air. With water you can learn ice bolt, acid burst, town portal, and Lloyd's Beacon. With Air, you can learn you Fly, Invisibility, & Implosion, among others. You will need to improve your skill in air & water before you can use most of them. I just got Grandmaster in water, so I can use town portal in combat situations. I haven't been able to find Lloyd's Beacon yet. Do you have it, Kay?

Hi All, Barb, I found it in Alvar in the magic shop early. I went ahead and bought it and put it in the chests they give you to use in Ravenshore. I was afraid I couldn't find it later on. It's the best spell in the game. I just got the water Grandmaster this morning. So now I can use it. I use Town Portal a lot too! Boy, the Fire Plane is terrible. Lots of fire Elementals in here. I may never get out. Kill a few, then go outside and heal. Come back and do it again. Mad, You have a good crew there. With the Dragon, you can fly early in the game, too!

An "ogre" question .... I completed the "rescue quest" for the Smuggler Leader and whilst doing it killed all the ogres in their fort. [And also the ones hanging about outside.] But apparently there are more ogres to deal with Does anyone know where, specifically ?? Thanks. Mad

There are more up on the hill north of the fort. I think you need Fly to get up there. I still haven't found them all.
I've been to the magic shops in Alvar and Ravwnshore several times & can't find Lloyd's Beacon. I hope it'll show up eventually. That & town portal are the coolest spells in any game, I think.
Mad, sounds like you have a good party. Since you only have 4 characters, you could pick up another good fighter until you're ready for the 2nd dragon. I just got him & got all the alliances I need, so my next step is the Pirate stronghold. Did you get your necromancer promotion, Kay?

Hi Mad, Things do have a way of keeping us from playing. Yay! You can fly now. Just click on the the dragons magic in the book where his spells are, then click fly. You are in the air flying everywhere. Use the 6 keys on the right of your keyboard. Page up, makes you go up, insert, makes you go down, delete, makes you look down on the places you are flying over. End, just gets you looking straight again. Now, you can fly anywhere you want. Make sure you have plenty of time while in the air or you take damage going down if you run out of time in the air.

Thanks, Kayc I actually read the manual as regards "dragon flying" so I found out how to but combat whilst flying might need some getting used to [Haven't had time to give it a go, yet.]

Well, looney4labs, I had a wonderful time dealing with the Ogres on my first "flying combat" mission .... Yahoo !! So bring 'em on !! EDIT : Later, buoyed by that success, I attempted the Wasp Nest. [No flying there.] And all I can say is

Phew !! I'm attempting to wipe out the Naga so I can possible get inside their vault. And so far, I seem to have been eating, sleeping and breathing the darn things !!!! However I think there is now only one band left - positioned just outside the vault itself. Could I be right ?? Do they mostly hang out around that area ?? Or could there be more bands of them elsewhere

Hi Mad, The name of the spell Smiley is talking about is Meteor Shower. I love the spell when groups of monsters are on the ground below. Your whole party flies, but while in the air, hit enter and the Nagas will stop. When it's the person's time whose has the fire magic, then use the spell. The rest of the party just uses bows. I used it a lot in Murmurwoods. I just cleaned out the wasp hive. Boy! Lots of wasp in there.

Thank you all !! I haven't acquired the "Meteor Shower" spell yet but I am already using turn based combat a lot as I tend to win more fights that way And, looney4labs !! Your potion sounded SO good. Pity it isn't real !!

Actually what I was referring to is the Dragons ability to use Flame Blast, which basically is an upgraded version of Fireball but explodes out. Good against larger groups Flame Blast
Expert level: 10 points + 1-10 of damage per point of skill. Master: 11 points + 1-11 of damage per point of skill. Grand Master: 12 points + 1-12 of damage per point of skill.
But true, there are other explosion spells that works just as good

Well, Smiley456, I've now finally and definitely killed all the Naga who are outside of their fort but I feel like a change of scenery before I venture inside and so am considering a tentative foray into the Wasp Nests of Alvar. However, so far I haven't been able to master jumping up into those holes in the ceiling I have several "Jump" scrolls but how do I use them ?? When I click one onto a character portrait, the "jump" happens in a split second but I've not jumped anywhere

Thanks Smiley, I haven't used that spell yet but I sure will try it out. I keep forgetting that the Dragon has other spells too. Don't think I've tried any of the other ones. Mad, I haven't use the jump scrolls yet. My air magic person has the spell in his book to use. Look up and see the hole that is just a little darker and bigger. Then you stand under it and use the jump spell. When you jump up, use the forward key at the end of the jump. May take you a few times to get it right. The scrolls probably work the same way if you click it on the person. It happens fast. I always use the turn combat. Some people don't, it's whichever way you want to play. I'm doing other things to try to get a little stronger before going back into the Fire Plane again. Hi Looney!

Hi Mad, Jump just throws you up in the air. You have to push the forward key to go forward in the air. Like Kay said, it might take a little practice to get it right. If your necro has air magic, he should be able to cast jump.
I don't think I ever did the Naga vault.

Hi Barb I'd better check if he does have the JUMP spell !! But thanks for the tip on jumping. I'm pretty sure the Wasp Nest will be too difficult for me right now but I wanted to give it a go as I expect the Naga Vault will be tough also. It's probably just going to be a case of "where would I like to die the most" ?? Cheers. Mad

While the Naga Vault might be tough (not much space to avoid the Naga attacks). Plane of Earth is way tougher considering how much damage the Earth Elementals can deliver. So having a high level party is recommended before giving those two places a try.

Tired of dying already, Mad? Your necro might need air magic to expert to use jump, and master or grandmaster to use Invisibility and Fly, but both those spells are invaluable. I have all 3 dragons now, and it's MUCH easier.

Hi all, Barb, when using three dragons, how do you open chests, repair, heal and other things that your party need? I can't even get one more dragon. Sure would like to have at least two.

Your party should be good enough to get the 2nd dragon - Brimstone, in Yaardrake's Cave in Shadowspire (you need Fly to get up to it.) I was level 28, I think. You can get the 3d dragon, Duroth, in Regna after you sink the Regnan fleet. I don't have a problem with repair, pick locks, etc. I have enough gold I can just go to a shop or a temple for what I need. If I have to open a chest, my party has enough HP to stay alive if it blows up. I had to drop my second necro to get Duroth, but he's worth it. Good luck!

You're doing great, Mad. Now you just have to get your MUs promoted so they can get Master and Grandmaster! I got Fred promoted to Priest of the Sun & he can heal the whole party at once. Your necros will become Liches. That's one of the hardest promotions, I think. Kayc, did you get Brimstone?

Hi Barb and Mad, Barb, I got Duroth from Regna in Old Lorb's cave after sinking the Regnan fleet. I'm doing great now. I have Brimstone waiting at the Adventurer's Inn in Ravenshore. Mad, Your moving up and doing good.

Ah, I see. I never played with a troll. Does he know any spells? The first time I played, I started with a minotaur. It didn't take long to realize that was a mistake! I do think a necro is the best.
Maybe you should drop Ithilgore for Brimstone. He's a little better fighter, I think.

Hi all Barb, that sounds just like my Troll. No magic, only great to start out with. Ithilgore is my best fighter. I put a lot of points into Dragon Ability. He's even better than Duroth. I have to give Duroth's more Dragon Ability. So, I guess I'll just stick with the two of them. Finished the game. Was nice playing an oldie again. Barb, you were right, my troll wore a couple rings to help disarm, and chests weren't a problem.

Hi everyone. I've never played the Might and Magic games, but reading all of your posts is making me interested! I was wondering---is this MM8 a Multiplayer game or Single player? I'm not crazy about multiplayer games, but if it's single I might have to give it a try. Thanks for the info! Tracy

Definitely not multi-player - as looney4labs so rightly says - or I certainly wouldn't be running it !! It's a great series, with Might & Magic VI being the most popular, I believe. But I'm very much enjoying M&M8, too

Hi all, Way to go Mad! Your doing great! Hi Tracy, Glad you are trying out the game. I love all the older Might and Magic games. 6 through 9, but 6 and 7 are my favorite. I just finished the game, but will be glad to help if I can.

Thanks so much you guys! I appreciate your being there for me! btw---It's so much fun to have found yet another "old' game that I've never played. I LOVE the old-style graphics of games from this era and so I think that alone will make me happy. lol I think I should put in a plug for GOG too while I'm here because without them, I'd never be able play the oldies but goodies on this new PC! Tracy, who's hoping to finally sneak off and play some of Might and Magic 8 today. (Last night I was all set to go and my hubby came home early--darn it. So....going to sneak in some playtime before he gets home from work. lol)
