It is Java Update Check.
There are mixed opinions whether it is ok or dangerous on the internet. You should Google it and decide for yourself.

I would disable Java in all your browsers for the time being. To get rid of that update popup, you will have to disable it in your startup programs using msconfig.

I have been reading your comments on Java in this and other Topics. I have Java Oracle.

What (why) is the reason I (we) have Java on our computer in the first place?

What is the purpose of Java?

Would I need Java in other sites?

GB being a game site, obviously if you say we do not need Java, then we can play our games without it, being download or DVD. Possible exceptions?

I have one scare: I'm playing "Trainz Simulator 12" and building my own train world. Do I need Java?
I certainly do not want to lose all those hours of work.

Thanks for your responses. thumbsup

Java is widely used around the web for applications and games.
My internet bank uses it for log-in!!

Anyway - I still have mine enabled and there was a patch not long ago to take care of the hole.

Unfortunately, the patch did not take care of the problem at all. Read the link I posted. I would enable it only long enough to use it for the websites you need and disable it after until they fix it.

EDIT: It was REALLY late last night and I was too tired to post any more information. As Geo says, you have to read some of the warnings and then make up your own mind about Java. I don't have it on my Windows 8 computer at all. Supposedly this security hole is bad enough that US Homeland Security is advising people to uninstall it. I'll just link to a couple of blogs and articles and you can make up your minds yourselves.

Chief, if you really need it for some things such as on-line games, you could just leave it installed on your computer and enable it in your browser and then disable it when you are through with something that needs it.

This blog is from a year ago, long before this latest flap about Java security failures.

Can You Really Quit Using Java?

Drac, thank you so much for all these info. I will keep it.

But to be sure on how to disable it, how do I do that with Win 7?

Thanks in advance. thumbsup

WOW!!! So much info is making me dizzy. or should I say 'dizzy-er?
Does all this data mean that as long as I don't open the program it can't hurt my 'puter???

I bought the Studio Visual Steps - Windows 7 for Seniors... (Dummies) and so far, many of the pictures are not what is on my screen. Haven't had a headache for years, but this book has certainly changed that. Each subject sends you to another, which then sends you to another, over and over, and I end up back to the first one again.

burble-burble, burble.....

Just remember that Java and Javascript are not the same
http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/javascript/article.php/3470971/Java-vs-JavaScript.htm

You uninstall Java the same way you uninstall any other program on Windows 7 -- through Control Panel
http://www.java.com/en/download/uninstall.jsp

Or you can disable Java in Control Panel, using the instructions in the series of pictures here

If a program uses Java, and you have Java installed, the program will use it. But it's not the programs you have installed on your computer that are the real problem. Do you know whether every website you visit uses Java? Or whether any of the ads on the websites you visit use Java? If not, how do you know that none of them will infect your computer through Java?

I'm not familiar with the book that's giving you a headache, and Amazon doesn't seem to let you see inside this particular book. But is it possible that the book isn't showing you pictures of every step? Or could they be showing you pictures of Control Panel when Category View is selected instead of Large Icons or Small Icons -- or vice versa? This page shows how to select Category View vs Large Icons view

Thanks Inland. I just disabled my Java. I never knew it posed a security problem. I've had the same pop-up messages as Granny, and never knew what it was all about.

I just checked several of my favorite websites and they were half blank - missing pictures and text, so I turned Java back on, and now they're back to normal. So i guess I need it after all.
