I doubt it has anything to do with Windows 8, but rather your browser or an add-on that is required such as Flash. Usually there is some kind of message saying a plug-in is needed to display a website, but I've had this happen on a couple of computers with new installations of Windows 7 and there was no message. I assume you're using IE10? I would contact Gamersgate and ask them.

It won't open whichever route I take either from Google search or directly from previous emails from them. I assume therefore that it is something to do with their site not being compatible.

Draclvr is probably right. Your problem is more likely due to IE10 than Windows 8 itself.

Have you tried a different web browser -- like Firefox, Chrome, or Opera?

Hmmmm. Installed Chrome and tried it that way but still can't get the webpage up. I did receive message saying the server sent no data which is more than on Google. I have tried replying to a previous order email from them tho I suspect that is probably auto generated so am not going to hold my breath! I've only ever bought one game from them so have not lost much luckily but I do browse them regularly.
Oh well. If anyone hears that they've tweaked things please keep me posted

If you enter
81.201.212.158
into your web browser's address bar instead of
gamersgate.com
or
www.gamersgate.com
does the Gamersgate site come up?
If Gamersgate loads for you using the IP number, you're having a DNS resolution issue.

Also, is it possible you have a firewall (or an antivirus suite that includes a firewall) that could be blocking the Gamersgate website?

One thing some web browsers have started doing by default is going to the https version of the address instead of the http version. This causes some websites to hang, since they have no https version of the homepage. Web browsers usually automatically change to the http version after a short time if there is no https version, but this doesn't always work.

I tried the IP address route and disabling firewalls and still can't get the webpage to display. Think I'm gonna give up

Big Thank You to Draclvr. I have very few of these games and don't have Windows 8 yet but I appreciate the effort you went to to record and share this.

Here's hoping I will get to personally try these games on Win8 soon.

urock thanks wave

Thanks, Bob. I'm plugging away at it as time permits. I'm hoping that people who have games that I don't will check them out so we can add them to the post.

Hi,
Just dropped by to say that I was able to play "Riven The sequel to Myst" from GOG on my Windows 8 64 bit Laptop, I just let GOG pretty much let it install by itself and do it’s setup, the only thing I changed was the “Install to destination” in which I choose to install it in my C:\Games folder and the game played without a hitch, crash or any hiccups.

That's good to know, Starcom! Does GOG advertise Riven as playable on Windows 8?

Hi, I am still having problems with Gamersgate despite several emails to and fro with them. They fully admit that they have had several others with the same problem but still have not rectified it.
However I now have a greater problem. I downloaded Simon the Sorcerer 5 from Adventure Shop and cannot activate it. It tries to take me, via Chrome, to a website which will not display. I have used AS before and never had to activate a game this way. Usually a box appears where you can directly enter the Unlock code.
I have emailed AS 2 days ago and have so far heard nothing back from them so I have paid for a game I cannot play...not a happy bunny!
Has anyone else had this problem? thumbsdown

Try copying the web address in the Chrome address bar to a different web browser -- like Firefox or Opera -- to see if it's simply a problem with Chrome.

This may be a login page or something necessary to activate the game.

It's unlikely to be a Windows 8 problem. So if you continue having problems create a new thread for it.

Thanks Jenny100

It seems the publisher has gone out of business. Adventure Shop have now refunded me.
Reading some other blog sites it seems others have had the same problem and the game has been taken down from all sites which were selling it inc. Amazon and Gamersgate (which I still can't access!)
General comments seem to suggest this is unusual as other games from the same publisher have been picked up by other publishers.
If anyone can find out anymore I'd be grateful.

On a slightly different tack...when I first changed laptop, I couldn't access FreeRide Games either. Now I can. Why have they managed to sort out the problem and Gamersgate still haven't?

lynthorpe, be very wary when using Free Ride Games. They get an extremely poor rating from WOT (Web of Trust). Ratings comments range from "spam, phishing and malicious content to virus downloads with the games. Most of the negative comments are older so perhaps they have cleaned up, but just be careful.

I'm really surprised by this Draclvr. Neither my Norton nor SpyBot flagged it up as suspect. I have been using FreeRide for about 4 years on my old laptop (Dell Inspiron)...in fact it was preloaded along with WildTangent (the latter also preloaded on my current HP laptop). I assumed a PC manufacturer would not endorse a suspect site.
Thanks for your warning tho. I'll be careful and if anything goes wrong you can say "I told you so!" LOL
