Overview:

Diskworld Noir is a parody of film noir style detective movies. it is set in the strange world of author Terry Pratchet's imagination. I have never read one of the 'diskworld' novels, but the manual that comes with the game gives extensive background on this fictional world inhabited by humans, trolls, vampires, and the dead. (and even The Grim Reaper himself)

Game Play

Diskworld Noir is a traditional 'point & click' adventure game, with most movement and inventory controlled with the mouse. You play a "down on his luck" Private Eye named Lewton. (is there any other kind of Private Eye??) His assignment as the game begins is to find a missing person. You explore various locations in the game, choosing your destination from the game map, which shows new locations as they are discovered. you meet and have conversations with many strange characters. Conversation topics are selected by choosing them from Lewton's notebook. The notebook is automatically updated when anything of importance is discovered. This is one of those games that gives you a little audio and visual clue when you have discovered an important fact.

About 1/2 way through the game, there is an unusual plot twist that gives your character some new abilities to help sniff out the bad guys. I won't give it away and spoil the game, but those who have played this know what I mean!

Graphics :

The game setting is dark and rainy "Ankh-Morpork", one of the cities on the 'Diskworld". The animated graphics and setting are appropriate to the atmosphere of the game.

Conclusion:

I enjoyed this game much more than I expected to, and I was sorry to see it end. The game was produced in England, and was not marketed extensively here. . If you can dig this one up somewhere, I highly recommend it.

One of my all time favorite games Thanks for the great review nolalou. What I especially liked is in addition to information being added to Lewton's notebook it is also crossed out after you've exhausted the possibilities. That way you know you're done with that topic.

I really got into the characters in this game. I felt so sorry for Sapphire. She only wanted to get ahead and like so many choose wrong and wound up paying for it and poor old Malachite - I wanted to take him home and take care of him and Nobby was a hoot - everyone has met someone just like him at one time or another.

A great, great game -

I thought this game was fantastic

this and TLJ were the only truly great adventure games to have come out in the last 2 years.

Nolalou, what a great review!
One question only ... you write that the game setting "is dark and rainy". How is it compared to Blade Runner? (which is a game I thought was too dark)

Thanks for all the feedback!

Mammamu, it's dark and rainy, but I didn't find it hard to see what I was looking for. You just don't see any sunshine! I thought the graphics were very well done.

The big problem with this game is I don't seem to see anyone selling it at the moment. I bought it from an online retailer about 6 months ago (I think CDACCESS, but I'm not sure), but they don't have it listed now.

If anyone knows a source for this game, you may want to post it here.

Thanks
nolalou

This is such a good game!
Just a friendly word of advice, it is a bit on the talkative side. Not that I minded since the dialogue is witty and amusing. In fact even the instructions in the manual is hilarious. A personal favourite of mine is the copy protection description .
