Looking for something other than Words with Friends to play on my new Android phone. I picture something like Professor Leyton (Nintendo DS) to pass the time while I am waiting for my kids karate/gymnastics classes to finish.

Better if not a lot of sound required, I do not want to have to carry headphones everywhere I go.

Any thoughts?

Broken Sword is a must, you might be able to play with subtitles, but I have not verified if you can do that on the phone version (I have an Android tablet).

I cannot help much on Android, because I am already buying all the adventure games for the iPad and iPhone, I draw the line there. I can't possibly also buy them all for Android (as well as PC and Mac!).

Soon these publishers will need to start selling one game that will work on all platforms. It is ridiculous to buy them 3 or 4 times as I do now.

Yes I already played all the BS games years ago and recently repurchased them during a Steam sale. I am actually replaying BS1 right now on PC!

Oh, but you must instead play them on Android, so much nicer... finally these tablets are not just for emails and news websites.

Actually its a phone... but thats beside the point. The ones on Steam are also the "upgraded" versions, they look awesome.

There is not much adventure wise on Android (for phones), I suggest the Adventures of Tintin, more action and arcade though, but not difficult. There is Machinarium.

I have not seen the equivalent of Professor Leyton on Android, but I have not looked that much on the Google Play website. And I exclusively searched for what was ported to Android from other platforms.

They must have their own adventure and puzzle games that don't exist on other platforms. Let us know what you find out in time.

But since you have a Nintendo DS, you might wish to look at this thread, there are many adventures:

http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/327373/1

On Nintendo DS you must play: Hotel Dusk (1 and 2) and Trace Memory/Another Code – Two Memories.

I had trouble making the links work, but I think I fixed the problem. If the links don't work, you can put the developer name in Google Play's search field to get the game lists.
__

I haven't played many adventure games on my Android, but I found these developer lists. They include several adventure type games.

Google Play: Big Fish Games

Google Play: Synthesis Design Solutions Games

Google Play: HeroCraft Games

Google Play: Alawar Entertainment Games

Some of the game titles: The Haunt, Mirror Mysteries, Twisted Lands, Treasures of Mystery Island, Tiny Bang Story, Majesty.

Hope you find something you like!

PS: I've lurked here for years, but finally joined a few days ago. This is my first post.

Thank you for the welcome, BrownEyedTigre. I've always enjoyed browsing GameBoomers. I've used the walkthroughs many times, and appreciate all the reviews.

Not sure if I was suppose to introduce myself elsewhere, but just to let you know: I started playing adventure games around 5 years ago (Nancy Drew). Since then, I've played many different ones and have even gone to the Dark Side with Morrowind, Oblivion, Witcher, Dragon Age, etc. I also enjoy Sims. Not much of an action/arcade person though.

Thanks, rmt!

I read what I had written about starting gaming around 5 years ago and knew that I had miscalculated. So I looked it up just now. My first adventure game was Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion, bought June 8, 2004 on Amazon. That's been almost 9 years ago. How time flies when you're having fun!

Checking the other orders soon after that ... before the summer was out, I'd bought 8 more Nancy Drews, The Longest Journey, Syberia I & II, Myst 10th Anniversary Ed, and 10 more adventure games. And on it went. I was hooked from the start! lol

Those are all great games, I enjoyed all the Nancy Drews, I am playing all the latest ones again now on the Mac. Syberia and the Longest Journey are at the top of my list, with Culpa Innata.

Adventure games are like watching movies, except it is much more immersive, with deep impact. It helps a great deal when you fall asleep, when you dream. You think about it, you live in it, it is a real evasion and escape from reality. No film could ever come close to that kind of feeling, films are just not immersive enough.

I don't watch TV anymore. If I am not playing an adventure, I am writing or reading a book.

Dave,

I play lots of games on my Android tablets. I think Professor Layton would be considered more of a puzzle game but if you want adventure games, I can give you some suggestions. I have a Nook Color and a Samsung Galaxy Tab Note 10.1. Playing on a bigger screen is wonderful! I have bought games from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google Play. Amazon has a Free App of The Day and Barnes & Noble just started a Free App Friday but I'm not sure you can get it if you don't have a Nook. If you want to buy games from Amazon, you will have to circumvent Google Play because they want you to buy from them. It isn't hard to do and I love the Amazon Free App of the Day. Here are some suggestions:

Broken Sword-I know others have suggested it but I am playing th Director's cut and love it!

The Secret of Grisly Manor
The Lost City
Twisted lands: Shadow Town
Tweisted lands: Insomniac
Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek
Mystery Behind the Mirror
Special Enquiry Detail
The Haunt 1 & 2
Deadly Association
Jennifer Wolf and the Mayan Relic

There are actually quite a few games that you might like. Some of them are hidden object games with a story but I have still enjoyed them.

Playing on a phone or tablet is going to be different than playing on a PC. Big Fish Games has adapted some of their games to tablets. I see lots of neat games for the iPad and iPhone and hope that the game developers will port some of these games to Android users.

Hope this helps!

gatsbygirl, a few years ago I tried a couple of hidden object games on an 8.9 inch screen (netbook) and thought I'd go blind! crazy Really tough. Are the new hidden object game apps made with larger, simpler objects than the regular HO's? Not sure I could do more tiny pixel hunts! My Android is an 8" tablet.

rmt: I agree about preferring games and reading over TV. And if I get into an RPG, I could almost live there ... well, if reality didn't call me back!

Oh, and Draclvr, thank you for the welcome.

So RPGs are even more immersive? I never made the leap to the dark side, but there is also a forum for the dark side on Gameboomers as you probably know.

I intend to play The Matrix one day, after I used all the hacks so virtually I can just walk through it without having to kill anything... wink

Do you have any suggestions of RPGs in which you lived that are more like adventures that you feel I might like?

lanlynk,

As far as finding objects in the HO games, it depends on the game. Some of them have objects that are way too hard to find and I hate those games! I always read the reviews and if most of the people are saying that the objects are too hard to find, I don't play those games. I much prefer straight adventure games but don't mind some of the hidden object games. The Big Fish games that are a mix of adventure and HO are fun.

I see lots of really fun looking games for iPads and iPhones that aren't available for Android devices. As Android devices become more popular, hopefully the game developers will start porting more games to them.

rmt: I think most RPGs have adventure-style tasks in them, but that's not the main focus. The big goal for these games today is to give players as many choices as possible: in character creation, quests, exploration, non-linear play, and I guess what could be called ethics. But of course, there is the fighting. Hard to avoid that!

I freely admit that I play these games on easy most of the time. I don't do multi-player, so I don't have to worry about competition or "cheating." I just play for my own enjoyment. What's key for me is to use mods. They personalize my game, help me be stronger, make working with companions easier, give me a chance to garden, decorate, dress nicely wink ... what have you! Even more choices with mods.

I'm a fan of the Elder Scrolls games. My first was Morrowind, then Oblivion. I'm trying to get going in Skyrim now. But I like the BioWare games too. Just finished Dragon Age II, which I also enjoyed. Always a bit confusing to learn a new game's movements, interface, etc., but it becomes second nature after awhile. You might be able to find simpler games, but you'll probably lose quality and freedom. Smaller RPGs tend to be more linear, with less replay value. JMHO

Thanks, gatsbygirl. I have played a few adventure/hidden object hybrids, but even in regular adventure games, I don't like hunting around a screen for things. But I know lots of people love those HOs.

Well, I'm just glad we have the variety nowadays! And reviews are a great resource, you're right.

Please, in order to keep conversations where they should be, limit this thread to adventures only. You can always discuss RPG's in the DarkSide and HO and other casuals in the Casual forum. thanks

Yes, rmt, if you ask about dipping your toes into darkside games over in that forum, I'm sure you'll get TONS of recommendations!

Oh no, thanks, I don't intend to switch to the DarkSide just yet. I was just curious to find out which was the RPG that lanlynk found so immersive. It would have been difficult to switch this to the DarkSide forum as it flowed from the conversation. Perhaps I should have sent a PM instead. But no harm done, I got the answer and now we can go back to talking about adventures. wink

The Lost City and Haunt 1 & 2, both mentioned before, are stunning games. I have played all of them on my Kindle Fire.

Oh - just remembered another. I am currently playing it on my Kindle Fire. It's called Tesla's Electric Mist. Pure adventure, although it's hard to tell from the description.
