Drac, if you do the same in the Walkthrough section or in the Game Publishers & Developers section, you will get the same result.

That is why I'm asking if I can get this same effect with IE10 and how to install it if of course it is possible?

Now I'm in Windows 8 and IE 10. As you say, I do not get the box in either the Free Games Galore page or the Walkthrough page. However, I do get the change in color if I click on a link in a list of search results.

I still get the box in my Firefox on Windows 8.

Since IE 10 behaves like it's supposed to with the change in color in other links, I have no idea why the "box" doesn't show up in the links at Gameboomers.

If that feature is helpful to you, I'd suggest using Firefox for the time being. Maybe Inland or Jenny will have a clue about why this is.

Drac, thanks for the help.

I'll see what I can do about Firefox.

It's not something specific to IE. I see the same thing in Firefox. For example the 3rd entry in this screenshot of a Google search has the "box" around it after I select that entry and then use the "back" button to return to the Google page.

Yep, that's what I get at Galore.

I just tried to install Firefox and even come back to IE9. But I can't download them.

Is IE10 blocking them?

We certainly can finish this discussion tomorrow.

Getting late here.

EDIT: sorry, I got Firefox to install.

The thing is, Jenny, that the "box" does not exist in IE 10 for both Chief and me. I only shows up in IE 9 and Firefox.

Well, good to know you can use Firefox when you need to have this feature!

Absolutely none of my browsers behave this way, I wonder if this is some other (non-browser) specific setting in Windows?

I get it on both Windows 7 and Window 8 in Firefox. I get it in IE 9 on Windows 7, but not IE 10 on Windows 8.

In Firefox on Windows 8, if I do a search for say Galore and click on a search result, I am taken to a website. If I use the Back arrow to return to the search results, the color of the website listed in the search results has changed, plus there is now a dotted line box around the one I clicked on. The screenshot Jenny posted is what it looks like. Now, if I close the window and do another search on Galore, the search result I clicked on will no longer have that box, but the color will be changed.

In Firefox on Windows 7 and in IE 9 on Windows 7, I get the same result. It's in IE 10 that I no longer get the box. It's not important in the search results, but Chief uses it in the Gameboomers links because they do not change color after you click on them. The box is the only indicator you have clicked on one.

I see the box in Firefox on a Mac, but not in Firefox on my brother's Linux computer. I also don't see the box in Opera or Safari on a Mac. I do see it in Seamonkey on a Mac, which isn't surprising since Firefox and Seamonkey are related.

I see I misunderstood what Chief was talking about, so I did as suggested and this is what I see.

Using IE 10 or Opera I only get a change in color when I click on the name of a game in Games Galore and return from that site. As I said above, the same thing happens when selecting a link after Googling a topic.

I missed Jenny's link and after seeing the image, remembered I've never seen a box around anything like that. Just the color change after selecting the link and returning.

While there plenty of references to remove the dotted lines with CSS, none will replace them for the last followed link, at least that I've run across. I'm sure you could do it with a combination of JavaScript and CSS, but that doesn't solve your problem.

From what I understand it was a usability feature built into the browser, unfortunately none of mine ever behaved this way.

I just looked through Opera's settings and only saw an option to underline links and change visited links color. I also looked at IE 10 and only found underline always, hover, never. Nothing about boxing a visited link. So I guess the question is why some see a box and others don't.

I don't think anyone sees the box in IE 10. We only see it in IE 9 and Firefox.

I Googled this topic and found many links to sites showing how to disable the dashed box, none how to enable it. On the sites I looked at, it was explained these boxes were once used for those who didn't have a mouse, and were used to let them see where the cursor was at the moment. Now they are considered ugly, and unneeded, their words not mine. Google the topic of dashed box around links to read a lot more on this topic.

Wow, I had no idea! But I do remember the days of navigating using the Tab and other keys and the "box" would move around. Interesting. I think mostly this was an issue for Chief because the links do not change color in the Free Games Galore page here at GB.

You can still change the color of followed links with IE 10 using your own CSS (specified in Tools, Options Accessibility). But it’s a global setting, in other words, every followed link will be affected.

Just create a text file in your Documents folder and paste something similar to this -

Code:
a:visited
{
 background-color:lightyellow;

}

Rename the file to my.css and point to it in the options above. Make sure you place a check mark in the "Format Documents using my style sheet" box)

Chief, you mentioned that the links are highlighted (boxed) when you return to the GB page - when you follow a link does it open in a new tab? Or, does it replace the current page?

By the way, the above mentioned trick will not work well here at Game Boomers, but should work just fine on most pages. Try it on a Google search if you want to see it work.

Inland, it replaces the current page.

I checked to be sure, using Firefox.

And I'm sure that it did the same with IE9.

That would indicate you've got tabbed browsing turned off. I tried that, and all links open in a new window. Normally for that to happen you have to code it in the HTML as: window.open("some_page", "_self");

I'm not sure why that's happing for you - maybe the Web Master can answer that one. Like I said, it's been years since I've done serious Web design.

Chief,

As to color on Free Games Galore, can you reload the page and try to see if that is what you want.

MaG, with IE10, at Galore, after clicking on a game to see it and come back at Galore, I see that the title of the game is darker, but not by much.

If I didn't know what to look for, I would probably have not see it.

I checked other sections and got the same small difference.
