gatsbygirl, a few years ago I tried a couple of hidden object games on an 8.9 inch screen (netbook) and thought I'd go blind! Really tough. Are the new hidden object game apps made with larger, simpler objects than the regular HO's? Not sure I could do more tiny pixel hunts! My Android is an 8" tablet. rmt: I agree about preferring games and reading over TV. And if I get into an RPG, I could almost live there ... well, if reality didn't call me back! Oh, and Draclvr, thank you for the welcome.

So RPGs are even more immersive? I never made the leap to the dark side, but there is also a forum for the dark side on Gameboomers as you probably know. I intend to play The Matrix one day, after I used all the hacks so virtually I can just walk through it without having to kill anything... Do you have any suggestions of RPGs in which you lived that are more like adventures that you feel I might like?

rmt: I think most RPGs have adventure-style tasks in them, but that's not the main focus. The big goal for these games today is to give players as many choices as possible: in character creation, quests, exploration, non-linear play, and I guess what could be called ethics. But of course, there is the fighting. Hard to avoid that! I freely admit that I play these games on easy most of the time. I don't do multi-player, so I don't have to worry about competition or "cheating." I just play for my own enjoyment. What's key for me is to use mods. They personalize my game, help me be stronger, make working with companions easier, give me a chance to garden, decorate, dress nicely ... what have you! Even more choices with mods. I'm a fan of the Elder Scrolls games. My first was Morrowind, then Oblivion. I'm trying to get going in Skyrim now. But I like the BioWare games too. Just finished Dragon Age II, which I also enjoyed. Always a bit confusing to learn a new game's movements, interface, etc., but it becomes second nature after awhile. You might be able to find simpler games, but you'll probably lose quality and freedom. Smaller RPGs tend to be more linear, with less replay value. JMHO

Thanks, gatsbygirl. I have played a few adventure/hidden object hybrids, but even in regular adventure games, I don't like hunting around a screen for things. But I know lots of people love those HOs.
Well, I'm just glad we have the variety nowadays! And reviews are a great resource, you're right.

Yes, rmt, if you ask about dipping your toes into darkside games over in that forum, I'm sure you'll get TONS of recommendations!

Wow I think I'm just going to start bringing my kids DS with me instead... doesn't look like there is much out there for Android. I was hoping there were more... well-known titles. Seems like Broken Sword is the only contender.
Thanks all.
(Maybe that way I will actually FINISH Professor Layton....)

You can legally purchase any of the old sierra or lucas arts games on GOG.com and then load them into Scumm for android. It works amazing! I just finished space quest 5 that way. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.scummvm.scummvm&hl=enyou'll need the sierra plugin to play sierra games.

I got an iPad a week ago. I wanted something to play games on away from my desktop computer. I was lured by a game called The Room, which I read a review on. I'm a true adventer gamer, I love Myst-like puzzles discovery games. While The Room is exactly that (a room), you get to explore puzzles boxes in 3D. It's like Safecracker, but with the ability to turn and manipulate objects. I haven't felt this sort of wonder since I first played Riven a long time ago. Here's a list of games I'm looking into for my iPad. Forever Lost The Witness Kairo (I was going to get this for my PC anyhow) Infernus Verse Flee The Haunt 1 and 2 Tesla's Electric Mist
There are some good puzzle games too. I like the ability to use the mechanics of the iPad in the solve - tilting or shaking. It adds another twist to the puzzles. I'm playing 100 Floors right now and it really gets you thinking outside the box. Between my Windows computer and my Ipad, I have more selection for the games I like to play than I've had in a long while.
