I have no idea whether it will amuse anyone to play this sort of childhood idiocy game on-line, but I thought it might be fun to try. I am sure you all know how it works: (i) I (and each successive setter) put up a blank word (so that all you know is the number of letters) ; (ii) one of you guesses a letter and if you are correct it is inserted into the appropriate space(s) ; (iii) a wrong guess of a letter results in another step towards (a complete drawing of) the gallows ; (iv) as soon as there are enough letters to give you a chance, you try to guess the word; (v) if you guess successfully you win and set the next word ; (vi) if none of you guesses the word within a set number of guessed letters (probably ten, but let's see how we go), the setter wins and sets another word while the guessers get hanged ; (vii) you can try to guess the word at any stage regardless of whether you have been one of those to guess a letter, and there will be no limit on the number of word guesses. C H I P M U N K (8 letters) - successfully guessed by Curly with only two letters revealed! Letters wrongly guessed so far: EATH Number of letter guesses left: 6

Thanks guys, but we need to steady it down a bit: until you know which letters are wrong, you won't know which ones to try next! It will be a (perhaps irritatingly) slow game, I'm afraid, as you will therefore have to give the setter a chance to respond to each letter. However, I will fudge things a bit to get us going. There is no E (thanks Niki for starting us off and for the picture), and as the trick is usually to get the vowels first I will jump to Jema's A (no) and Curly's I (yes). I will then take Doreen's T (no) and MxM's N (yes). However, no offence, but I will ignore Gail's R, Haroula's S and Bernie's W at least for now in case you (or anyone else) want to rethink those given what you have learned about the word. Panda Sue has kindly provided some graphics, so I am adding those. So, another letter anyone?

Sorry Gail, no luck!
Probably best to go for another vowel next.

Excellent mon brave! You can obviously read my mind (such as it is). Are you content to set the next one? I can send you Pandora's gifs to build the gallows if you wish.

O and S yes, but no T, D or M.
No rule against plurals.

Correct Niki: I think that I probably need to go back to the drawing board to tweak the game rules a bit, but meanwhile would tou like to set a word? I can PM Pandora's gifs to you for the gallows.
Actually, I already have an idea which may make the game a little more interesting: each guesser must offer two letters at a time, which means that there is the possibility of up to two steps toward the gallows each time. We should probably also cut down on the number of wrong guesses to complete the picture (perhaps to 7) and include any wrong word guesses.
Do you want me to "roadtest" the change, or would you prefer to have a go?
