I can't turn my WD on, no matter what I do. I've tried manually and also have done a system restore. I keep getting the error 0x800106ba. It can't be removed because it's on my HP w/Vista and it cannot be re-downloaded. Any suggestion or should I just use something else?

Second issue. I tried to post this on my Cyberpower w/Win8. and I can sign into GB but when I click on forums, I'm automatically signed off. What's up?

I looked up your error message and found this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931849

"This problem may occur after Windows Defender is updated."

(Ha! Some "update!")

Microsoft has a "fix-it" utility on the page I linked to above, or you can scroll down to "Let Me Fix It Myself" for instructions.

Here's another link with different instructions for turning on Windows Defender
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/218830-windows-defender-fix-unable-turn.html

And a post from "Brian-Support Engineer" on ***this site*** suggests using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. He gives instructions.

Defender may become inactive if you install another antivirus, but it isn't really necessary then.

I'm not sure what's going on with your remaining signing in. But often deleting your Internet cache will fix problems. Are you using IE or Firefox or Chrome or Opera or something else as a Web browser?

Terri,

If you have MS Security Essentials turned on, it turns off Windows Defender. Evidently, it does the same things and more.

What is Windows Defender? This is the first time I have heard of it.

It comes/came on a computer with Windows installed as a default antivirus, I believe. It's been superceded by Security Essentials.

Except Windows 8 has what they call Windows Defender built in -- and it's actually Security Essentials, not the old Windows Defender.

Jenny is right about the built-in antivirus on Windows 8 being called Windows Defenders - but it's really Microsoft Security Essentials. Talk about confusing... But if it's Defender on a Vista computer, then it's an anti-spyware program and yes, if you install Microsoft Security Essentials, it disables Defender on Vista.

MS Essentials disables Defender on Win 7, too.

Hi Jenny. I had already tried the first solution. I got the message ("this microsoft fix does not apply to your operating system or application version. Fix50784")Didn't try the second.
I used to have Norton and I'm thinking someone on here said to try MSE, so uninstalled Norton and installed MSE sometime ago. It certainly took it's time disabling Defender. duh
So now the question is, can I run with only MSE?
Thanks,
Terri
PS As always thanks for all the imput!

I forgot to mention. I have the sign in issue when signing onto GB with IE, No problem with Google or Firefox.

It sounds like your security level may be too high - try resetting it (press the reset all zones to default button).

Other than that you can try adding Game Boomers to your trusted sites.

Peruse the link below, it describes how to get to the security settings.

Change security and privacy settings in Internet Explorer

If you want to run anything else with your MSE, I would highly recommend Malwarebytes Pro. The two are a great combination. MWB PRo is usully $25, but whenever Newegg has it on sale, I grab a few copies. I got the last ones for $15. You only pay once - it's not a subscription.

Thanks InlandAZ. I'll give it a go. I do have a lot of trouble with IE, but can't seem to get away from using it. wave
