In Part 2 of GreyFuss is getting a new computer (Part 1 is HERE ) we look for answers, options, opinions, suggestions and help on new Monitors.

I really don't need a new monitor (or a new computer for that matter) but if I am to grow up and get out of the Win XP world I might as well get out of the 20" 4:3 aspect ratio monitor I have now. This Dell Flat Panel has been great but it is older than 9 years and once again I should grow up to wide screen.

First some criteria that I want and then the questions.

* Need at least a 24"

* Vesa compliant as I plan on mounting it to the wall behind my desk.

* Have at least 2 type of connectors. At least one DVI for new computer (plus one for the XP PC for older games, maybe one, D-sub?, for 98SE) See question below for HDMI.

* Have Built in speakers for the XP & 98SE. The main computer has surround sound system

On to the questions...First Round

Is HDMI connection just for watching HD TV or HD games or is it the preferred method now for PC to monitor connection and is it better than the DVI? (of course the Graphic Card would have to support this)

Response Time: Is the lower the number the best or the higher? i.e. 5ms vs 1ms

Is LED backlit the best? It is for TV's but what about PC monitors and game playing?

Is an LCD Monitor the best used with a PC or is LCD TV technology just as good. Which is preferred?

Of course more questions will be generated by any and all help from you.

Yea! GreyFuss Computer Part 2 bravo

I don't know about the TV connection aspects of monitors, so someone else will have to comment about that.

Personally, I use a Viewsonic, 22" LED monitor right now. LED is considered somewhat better, or at least the more current technology, than LCD. LED is actually LCD too, though, just a different type. There are other new technologies that have to do with angle viewing, etc. (IPS, for one). Here are a couple of links to read over:

Best Gaming LED/LCD Computer Monitors 2013

Monitors Buying Guide

The lower the response time listed, the better. Although keep in mind that manufacturers often list their "best" recorded times rather than their average. And the language they use to describe these response times can be confusing and difficult to compare to another brand's specs. Check around for reviews.

EDIT PS: That is going to be one heck of a monitor!

Ummm... wow! I agree with lanlynk; that will be one heck of a monitor! Plus those are great links - I've bookmarked them myself.

First my monitor. It's a 4 year-old 22" Viewsonic. It has both HDMI and VGA connections. I have my old XP computer connected to the VGA interface. If I have both computers on, all I have to do to switch between them is press a button on my monitor. That's a very handy option rather than using a switch. I have a separate mouse and just switch my little Logitech Unifying Receiver for the keyboard. It's not perfect, but it works. A multiple computer KVM switch might be an option to allow you to use the same keyboard, monitor and mouse on all your computers. Some of them even have sound options.

HDMI just means High Definition Multiple Input - or that you can get HD video and audio through the same cable. Your old computers will not have an HDMI interface. So, if you want to use the (usually crappy, but adequate) speakers built in to the monitor, you will need to be sure there is a way to connect a separate speaker cable from your monitor to the old computer. That's assuming there will be a normal audio jack outlet from the monitor. Most likely with all new monitors, the build-in sound will be delivered through HDMI. If that's not possible, it might be best to just use a set of old speakers, especially if you want to be able to have sound for two extra computers.

The links explain a lot of the rest, but as you said, I'm sure there will be a lot more questions!

EDIT: Greyfus, this morning I was wandering around Newegg and saw this ViewSonic. It doesn't have HDMI, but does have the regular audio output on the back. This is the type of monitor that would work great with a KVM switch with support for sound.

ViewSonic

This ASUS has both HDMI and an audio output for even more options.

ASUS

The actual user reviews are a great resource. I usually throw out the 1 eggs reviews as most of the time they are not relevant.

You may have to use an adapter for the D-Sub unless you buy an older model.

Quote:

No.

Quote:

Again no.

Quote:
and is it better than the DVI?

No. HDMI has the potential to offer both sound and video over the same cable -- at least if the connections on both ends are set up for it. The picture doesn't look any better with HDMI than with DVI though -- as long as you're talking about DVI-D (digital DVI). Check the Wikipedia for more information on the differences in DVI types.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI

You may have noticed that Frogwares had to make a patch for Sherlock Testament so it would work properly with HDMI.
***Sherlock Testament patch description***.
One of the things they mention is that the patch fixes screen lag with HDMI. Now Frogwares fixed the problem, but other game companies may not. So for best compatibility, I'd say to use DVI for games.

There is another type of port that is even newer, called the "Display Port."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_port

New video cards may have all three ports -- DVI, HDMI, and the Display port.

Quote:
Response Time: Is the lower the number the best or the higher? i.e. 5ms vs 1ms

Not if it means sacrificing things that are more important, like viewing angle, color depth, or color accuracy. 5ms is still fast enough for gaming.
According to the ***Wikipedia***...
Quote:
A worst-case response time of >16ms is insufficient for video gaming, due to the human eye being able to perceive differences in response times greater than 5ms. The difference between response times once below 10ms at 60Hz begin to become harder to perceive due to limitations of the human eye.

Well, choosing a new monitor is going to be the hardest and most time consuming of all the choices of me getting a new computer. There are so many out there and different ratings seem to show a different variety of monitors. Of course I need more schooling and hopefully through my learning others will too.

What do you guys mean when you say "That it going to be one heck of a monitor"? Why?

There are so many choices, configurations we have to move on to Round 2 of the questions but let me say a little more about my needs to help. I may be trying to learn more than I need and making it more difficult.

I only play Adventure games, a lot of Internet use and do some photo editing. So I am not sure about the need for super fast response lag times but would like some speed. Vivid, vibrant colors are a must and I am not looking for bargans or narrowing my search by cost. Looking for the best in my needs catagory to last another 9 years.

Still don't understand the type of connections yet.

DVI replaced VGA (D-Sub) as the optimum connection. Has HDMI replaced the DVI as a better transfer of the graphical data or is it for HD TV viewing only? What about Display Port which is another connection I just read about? Is this the optimum now?

Is a HD monitor over kill for what I need a monitor for? I will never be watching TV or movies on it. Or is it advisable because there may be HD content on the Internet (Youtube and such)? In which case an HDMI connection and Graphics card is a must but I sure would want to disable the audio part of that to direct the sound through the sound system and not the monitor speakers.

What is IPS monitors?

A lot of Monitors state the have x amount of USB ports but they say upstream and downstream. Not sure what that means

I know that I will develop more questions and the thread may get long but all your help is appreciated no matter what or how much you comment on.

I have a very old Nec... but I like it. One feature I have on the front is Not only a menu button but a Select 1/2 that I can switch from my XP to my win 98.
Guess I just have to read all the details on every monitor to find this feature on a new monitor???

Thanks for posting these GreyFuss.... lots of good info for us that have to update soon.

The only "relevant" comment I can make is that my LED monitor is fantastic and I would highly recommend one thumbsup

My father just purchased an led monitor . He stated the difference between led and lcd , to him , was akin to the difference between a dvd and blu ray .

The last monitor I bought for myself was a Samsung Sync Master (LED) –and it's connected with an HDMI cable. HDMI cables a somewhat less intrusive than DVI, but other than that there's no difference video wise.

As to HDMI sound support, I don't use built in speakers, so I've always opted for a good external set. The sound quality of external speakers just can't be matched.

Your best bet is to visit your local electronics store (assuming you still have one in your area - they're getting to be a rare commodity) and compare them side by side. That's what led me to purchase the Samsung, it just looked much crisper that the others.

In the end, monitors (as well as other components) are a personal choice, just make sure you have adequate room for the size, and go with a top end brand.

Are HD monitors any good for game playing or general computing? Or are they just for watching TV or Movies? My mind is boggled for all the info I have been reading. I can't get much information as to the preferred connection now a days. If DVI-D and HDMI are no different where does this new Display Port connection fall? What about DVI-D Dual Link is that the best of all?

All I can tell you is that the best monitor you can get will be better for everything you do. My old eyes appreciate the quality of the display whether I am doing email, surfing or gaming.

I don't see a lot of difference between what you are going to see on your screen and all the different options you mention. From what I read, there are almost no devices on the market right now that support dual link DVI-D. I would go for a good DVI and VGA option to support your old computers.

It looks just the same as the other two to me.
My most recent monitor has DVI, HDMI, and a Display port, and they all look equally good.

Be sure to get a monitor with at least 16.7 million colors. The difference between 16 million and 16.7 million colors may be subtle, but you'll probably notice it.

When they say a monitor is an LED, they're referring to the backlight. Older LCD monitors used a fluorescent backlight (CCFL).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCFL
It's not a choice between LED and LCD.
It's a choice between an LED or CCFL backlight.

You can read about IPS at Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-IPS#In-Plane_Switching_.28IPS.29
Either S-IPS or S-PVA would be acceptable alternatives to IPS and have some advantages described in the Wikipedia article.

I wouldn't get a TN display. Even if the colors are acceptable, they tend to have poor viewing angles -- especially vertically.
The Wikipedia article explains more.

Monitors capable of 16.7 milion colors are pretty much the norm anyhow , so no real need to worry there . Going to a brick and mortar store is a good idea when looking for a monitor , but in the end , more often than not , a monitor can be purchased cheaper online at places such as Newegg or Tiger Direct . Sales sometimes come in to play at places such as OfficeMax . Hdmi actually stands for High Definition Mutimedia Interface . Out of curiosity GreyFuss , will you retain your current keyboard and or mouse ? You could save some money if you decide to . Some keyboards and mice can get rather expensive . So can video cards and all the other parts you will need .

Thanks, Creeping Doom. Had a minor brain drain there - that is indeed what HDMI means. Don't overthink this, Greyfuss... a really good monitor with all the features you want is going to be fine for you.

That is one fine monitor! But I didn't see anything about VESA Mounting Compliance. Will it go on the wall like you wanted?

Wow, all this info! Coming to GameBoomers makes me smart. idea

Gasp... I'm having a hard time getting past the price! Yes, it's VESA compatible - it's down toward the bottom in the Details tab.

This one has no VGA option, so connecting your old computers to this monitor either directly or through a KVM switch would be difficult.

You'll be needing a pretty beefy video card to get the most out of this monitor.

Thanks for the input and opinion on this Dell. I was a bit concerned about this being so new that it didn't have much in the way of user reviews. It does look to have way over the specs of any other monitor and because of that it probably delivers one of the most vibrant colors. What I am most worried about it I can't find the word "gaming" in any article about this computer. The view reviews I read all said it was beautiful and the best monitor they ever bought but the reviewers said they were graphic artists or photographers. One bad review I read stated it was beautiful on still pictures but in gaming it had terrible ghosting on movement and he returned it. Think I will stay away from this as more reviews have to com into play. Plus Neweggs ad is wrong as it does not have built in speakers. It takes the Dell SoundBar for speakers. I do have 2 of those but.....

What do you think of this one released Sept 2012? Don't faint on the price Draclvr but look at all the connection choices including Dual Link DVI-D

... Whew, sorry. Still picking myself up off the floor!

If you go for one of these very large - this one is 27 inches - high resolution monitors, your old computers may not have enough video card to work on them. As I said above, it's going to take a pretty beefy card to work on them. Hopefully Jenny or Inland will know more about this, but you might want to check into what video card/chips you have in the old computers if you still plan on using them with this monitor.

Another search you might try is "best monitors for gaming" keeping in mind that they are talking about shooters and RPGs. They do talk about some of the things you should look for in a gaming monitor. This article is from a year ago in PC Magazine.

The 8 Best Gaming Monitors

Here is another one for May 2013.

Best and Top Rated Monitors for PC Gaming

I agree with some of the other thoughts that you should go to a brick and mortar store and actually look at monitors. You won't get the best representation of colors etc. because of the lighting in these stores, but you can at least get a feeling for the differences.

I will check out Best Buy but there aren't that many stores left and even then they don't seem to carry the models I am looking for.

You are probably right and I need to simplify my thinking and get my head out of the clouds.

One thing though is I have decided not to connect the Win98 to a new monitor as the games that I would use that for don't look good on an LCD so I would use my CRT monitor with that. So its just down to connecting one, maybe 2 XP computers and be able to switch the inputs. I too love the Logitech Unifying Mice and Keyboards. They are great except I hope they would make them so you could program them to more than one computer.

Head out of the clouds...check this out...the only problem is that I am not sure if this is a TN (Amazon says) or a TFT Active Matrix which it says in the review link. .

http://www.reviewgist.com/specs/asus-vg248qe
http://www.reviewgist.com/best-monitors

Isnt there a way to do a side by side comparison at Newegg or Amazon or somewhere between this model Asus and the one Draclvr linked to above? Asus VE248H ? I can't figure it out.

Keep in mind he was probably playing FPS-type games. If you're playing adventures, you may not see a problem. You'd have to use an adapter for the computer with the VGA (D-Sub) connection though.

Well, it's got the VGA connection, so you wouldn't need an adapter with it.

Newegg seems to have this model with 98 user reviews -- so you might want to look through their reviews even if you don't buy it there.

27" is nice. Remember you'll need a more powerful video card to drive the higher resolution than you would with the 24".

The closest I know to a side-by-side comparison is to open two Newegg webpages, one for
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236102
and one for
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236294
and use the "Details" tab on both of them.

The one you're looking at is obviously a better quality monitor. Better viewing angles, better overall brightness, larger monitor, etc. Other specs are better too. If it's what you want, go for it.

Greyfuss, once you get Windows 7 you will be able to "snap" two windows open side by side by simply dragging them to the edges.

That Asus VE248H is actually on my "wish list" should my dear old ViewSonic ever croak. It's old, but it's fine for me. It gets very good reviews. You can always download the user manual if you want to learn more about how it works.

Gardens put to bed for the winter. Time for some gaming!

What ever you decide on, if it's going to be a large monitor - make sure that video card is up to snuff (as has been stated before). Find one with the highest memory bandwidth and a minimum of 2GB of VRAM.

Something along the lines of GeForce GTX 670/680 would do well. If you plan to run multiple monitors, side by side, look at something like a GTX 690/780 w/4GB VRAM.
