What's the difference between these 2? Is there any and do they both have the updated graphics?
Thanks, caz

Myst Masterpiece is 2D and you click to move and realmyst is 3D and you can go around as you wish.

Ok thanks.
BUT what's the difference between just MYST and the Masterpiece edition.
caz
PS-I guess what i'm asking is which of the three looks better. Do Realmyst and Masterpiece both have the updated graphic?

Myst Masterpiece has 16-bit color while Myst has 256 color graphics.
Myst Masterpiece also has better sound.

RealMyst is the newest.
Which one looks better is a matter of opinion.
The still shots in Myst Masterpiece may look better, but with RealMyst you get the atmospheric effects like rain, fog, and snow.
RealMyst also includes the extra, though short Rime Age (the one with the snow).
If you get motion sickness from 3D movement, you may not want RealMyst.
If you want strictly point-and-click, go with Myst Masterpiece. I think you can configure RealMyst to be mouse-controlled, but it isn't point-and-click.

Hi Caz,
Realmyst has by far the best graphics of all fthe Myst games.I have played every Myst game available. The Walkthrough for Realmyst is a little different than that of the original Myst game, but most of it is the same. Of course, the last chapter of Realmyst is brand new.Once you have played Realmyst, you will never go back to the original game or to The Masterpiece version. Happy gaming!
Sandy

One thing about RealMyst. When it was released, it was considered a huge game and overloaded a great many computers. It's not at all big by today's standards, but if you are running an older computer check the technical material carefully.

I had bought RealMyst from GOG awhile back and had installed it on an Win XP computer. I also have the Masterpiece edition which is the one I had originally played. (Yes, I was late discovering the Myst games, but have played them all now!)

After reading this thread I installed RealMyst on my newer Win 7 laptop. There was quite a bit of jerky movement, so I exited and set it to run in Compatibility Mode--XP with patch 3--and now it seems to be doing just fine in Win 7. Nice version, BTW.

I also chose 32 bit instead of 16 bit in the game setup window. But even though it lists some wide-screen resolutions, it still plays in basically a 4:3 ratio when I tried them, just with finer details.

Is there a way to run RealMyst in true wide-screen? Or will it still just have the black edges on the sides?

yes ianlynk.
Open the Realmyst setup in your RealMyst folder on the hard drive. There you can choose from any resolution. i'm playing 1680x1050 now (widescreen). Although the setup should have shown up the first time you ran the game.

Thanks, Caz. I had tried the setup several times, choosing the widescreen resolutions, but it would never go full screen for me.

But I just tried it again, and voila! it worked. Why do things happen that way? LOL

Maybe my resolution changes before weren't "sticking" because I was also messing with the compatibility settings at the same time. ??

You have to run the set-up as Administrator or the changes don't "stick".

Well, since I was installing this in the wee hours of the morning, who knows what I messed up. lol

Thanks so much for your info, though. Without your post, I probably wouldn't have tried it again. And the game looks so much better with the widescreen resolution instead of boxed in with black edges! wave

Also make sure to check full screen anti-aliasing option...

I just looked at setup again, and my option for anti-aliasing is greyed out (unchecked). This install is on my laptop, which doesn't have a great graphics card. Maybe if I installed it on my desktop, that option would be available.

The game, by default, did put my Texture Quality to High, though.

Also, under the Advanced tab, it has an option for DirectSound3D. Do you recommend ticking that?

EDIT: I've been spending a little time in realMyst and came out of a building. It had turned night! I forgot that it did that in this version. Took me by surprise. I'll have to do the indoor puzzles during the night. yes

Oh, and BTW: I looked into using DirectSound3D and apparently Vista, Win7, and Win8 do not support this option unless the hardware can use a special driver, such as OpenAL. Since I'm just playing on my laptop, I'm not going to worry about that setting. Hopefully, I'll be able to hear all the atmospheric sounds in the game.

Hi, Lanlynk,
I'm glad that you are enjoying REALMYST. I guess it's one of my favorites, because I go back to play it ever so often.

This topic got me interested, so I reloaded and am playing the game again. If you've read the novels, be sure and find and appreciate the gravestone. Only RealMyst has it and it's a clever addition.

Oh, thank you! I have read the novels. I need to look for the gravestone!
