At the moment you can only hear it in Russian and French, but the English subtitles are coming shortly.

Interview with Benoit Sokal.

Has anyone seen the interview with English subtitles yet ? I've done a few searches but haven't found anything.

I, for one, don't see the necessity in having the video with English subtitles. I would much rather just have the written text of the interview.

I was hoping they would do that too Greyfuss, but so far I haven't heard any news on that.

They have the English subtitles now. You just have to click on the closed captions option.

He didn't say much other than he wasn't ready before but 'now it's different'.

Thanks Cathy!

Gil, lol To be honest, I am not really looking forward to this game. My gut says it will not stand up to the originals and I am afraid I will be disappointed. I truly hope I am wrong. I would love to be wrong!

Here's the last part of the subtitles translation starting from around 17:45, where Syberia 3 is discussed:
Quote:
Interviewer: Thank you very much, now I'd like to pass on the news that was a bit of a shock to all Syberia fans. The third part, now we know it's under development, at what stage is it now?

Sokal: Yes, it's true, the game is in progress, the release date is currently set for the end of the next year or, what is more likely, for 2015.

Interviewer: I'm not sure whether it's possible to get some detailed information about the upcoming game, like place of action, meeting with characters from the previous parts...

Sokal: It's a secret. I won't say a word (joking)
There'll be Kate Walker, possibly Oscar; the familiar Russian environment will remain. But this time it's the imagery of Chernobyl that fascinate me. Not the real city, again, it's going to be half-fictional.

Interviewer: So will it be a sequel or an independent story?

Sokal: Both. From the point of view of the character who broke with the past and is not sure about the new direction it can be considered as a sequel. However it's completely another story with new twists in the plot.

Interviewer: What about the technical side, will the interface and game navigation design remain the same or should we expect a modern 3D game? I, personally, like the traditional version, and I think, many people would prefer that old school charm to fancy gadgets.

Sokal: My main aim is to make the game beautiful. For my part the visual side and decoration are the most important aspects, concern about the way of technical realization is secondary. I speak to people from research and development, but haven't yet decided in favour of any special technique. What I know for sure is that you can't stop at something that you once achieved, there's always a need for evolution. Dealing with innovations you might be careful and discriminating, however it's not reasonable to ignore the technical development completely.

Interviewer: Was it a difficult decision to undertake the project after such a long pause?

Sokal: According to previous information Syberia-3 was not going to appear. I should explain where it comes from. When the company management changed, I didn't like the ideas of the new publisher, I realized that he just wanted to capitalize on success of the first two games and didn't care about the artistic side. At that moment I was not ready for further work. But now it's different.

Interviewer: What about some other projects apart from Syberia. Will you go in for comic books, graphic novels, maybe new games?

Sokal: I'm going to focus on things that would interest me at every separate moment. For now what interests me the most is the merging of comics and video games. So far they are quite distant from each other, but we are witnessing an obvious tendency towards shortening of paper production, i.e. books, comics, etc. Mainly in the US, but in France we can also observe processes of art shifting to the digital area. I think in time it'll be kind of a new mixed genre which will give young artists the opportunity to experiment and express themselves. One of the advantages of comics art is that it is quite cheap, and that could also help solve the problem of high cost of video games development.

Interviewer: Thank you very much. It was a big pleasure talking to you. Just a few words for your fans, what would you like to wish them?

Sokal:Thank you. First of all, I wish you patience, as the production's going to take much time, and I hope the new part won't disappoint you.

Yes, I saw the part about his interest in the merging of comics and video games. I really don't see how that squares with making a game "beautiful". If he veers off in the direction of Cognition, he's going the opposite way, IMO.

I realize I'm in the minority, but for me, graphics are a huge part of a great game and what he said there is not reassuring.

Gil.

Jenny, thank you very much for doing that. I really like Sokal, and I hope that he delivers something he will proud of. My concern is more of it turning into the publishers vision and not his own.

Well, he said that's why he didn't want to do it years ago, and he seems to be interested in doing it now, so I'm hopeful that the current publisher is giving him more control and the finished game will be a worthy addition to the series.

We won't see it soon though. When he says 2015, he probably means it. Hopefully it will stay close to schedule.

Thanks Jenny100. It's a very interesting read. I hope Sokal will be able to preserve his artistic concepts in Syberia 3.

Interesting to read what he has to say about digital media in the future--blending genres, etc. He says comics art is inexpensive, but I've seen some beautiful graphic novels, so maybe "cheap" doesn't have to mean simple line drawings. think

"...I've seen some beautiful graphic novels, so maybe "cheap" doesn't have to mean simple line drawings."

Graphic novels don't move. Add in animation. If you don't, you get 'cheap' in a game no matter how good the static drawings are and I have yet to see a 'graphic novel' type game that impressed me as beautiful. (Hey, I'm hard to please unless it's an old game where marvelous graphics weren't possible.) I do wonder how Sokal can vary much in style from the previous Syberia games if he has that in his head and do the series justice. I would imagine that anyone who's played the first and second Syberias would expect the same look from the third.

Gil.
