Hi

I have just recieved a new game through the post and hurried to my computer to play it. It downloaded with no problems but when I clicked the "Start game" button although creepy music is playing, my screen goes black and this error message comes up. "Error module sprites() Direct 3D Int failed Code (80040154)". Any idea what it is all about and how if at all I can fix it. My son has tried but he can't get past the error message either. He is uncomfortable about the black spots all over the silver side of the DVD? I know nothing so please can you help?

There's a Vista patch that might help with Windows 7 too.
http://www.patches-scrolls.com/dl.php?file=motd_vista_update.zip
or
http://www.gamershell.com/download_17633.shtml

This game had a configuration utility that allowed you to choose between hardware and software mode. Use software mode if the choice pops up.

Black spots all over the DVD doesn't sound good, but if the disc was unreadable, you'd probably have gotten a CRC error during install.

Is this the 2001 release ??

If so, that's brilliant info, thanks Jenny100 !! I wasn't aware of any help with playing the game in Win7 thumbsup

And good luck, Lozza grin

My son downloaded the patch and the game started running but only for about ten minutes, then a flag came up with Cougar runtime has stopped working. I closed it down. My son then clicked on one of the other things suggested. It ran a little longer than the last time but again with the cougar? Any hope of ever playing this game to the full?

Did you manage to find the configuration utility and set it to software mode?
Besides doing that, try it with compatibility mode set to Windows 98 or 2000.

My son said he had it running on software mode. I will pass info on to him as it is all whizzing over my head! Maybe I will just wait till I get my PC a new screen. Will it run happily on XP.

Glad he figured it out.
Sometimes it's the compatibility you don't expect to work that works best. Some games work with compatibility set to Windows NT or 2000 even though they were made for Windows 98.
Hope you enjoy the game.

It may not be possible to play the game without an occasional error. It may be that some parts of the game are more error prone than others, and you just have to work your way through those trouble spots.

Unfortunately the company that made the game is no longer in business, so there's no help there (no new patch for Windows 7 and 8 or newer drivers and hardware).

I understand thanks. My son has tried windows 95,98 and 2000 to no avail it just will not let us go any further. This time, before the cougar was this message does it mean anything to you please? Is there a way to play this blooming game?
error in module depth buffer()-> Init depth buffer failed. (80070057). I think that was what it was

That sounds an awful lot like a Direct3D error - did you install DirectX 8 when you installed the game?

I'm not sure what it means. It looks like it would be associated with 3D rendering, but you say you were using the software mode.

Is it possible you have a corrupt saved game? Can you restart the game without the error?

I can send you a bunch of saves from playing the game on Windows 98, but I don't know whether they'd work on Windows 7. You'd have to ask about how to use the saves in the Hints forum. Windows 7 undoubtedly puts saves in a different location than Windows 98 did.

I've uploaded the saves to my dropbox account in case you want to try them.

It's possible that the current DirectX doesn't include an older DirectX file that the game needs. Did you install the DirectX 8 that shipped with the game? Installing older DirectX won't overwrite DirectX 11, but will add files included with DirectX 8 that aren't in 11 by default.

If you can't find the DirectX 8 installer on your game disc, you can get it from

I will ask my son to do the above. I did actually get past the place with the cougar by missing the part where it usually comes up. I didn't expect it to work but it did. I got a little further in the game now the cougar is back, on the bridge and nothing to miss. The main character is picking up and placing boards on a gap to cross the bridge so stuck again till my son has a look at the DirecX thing. Get back to you, thanks all for your help so far.

My poor patient son has downloaded Direct X 8 and the game did eventually continue on after I went back to a saved game two lots back. Not sure which one worked but happily played for another half hour and again with the cougar! I think I ought to just concede as I darent ask for any more help. I must be driving everyone daft! Anyhoo thanks once again for all the time spent with me and my lame game. I will keep at it till it gives or I do.

I think the game is just not going to run well on your computer.
Make sure to save often and good luck.
