Each question will hint at one common word with 3 different meanings. OK - a drum is a musical instrument. You can drum your fingers or keep oil in a drum. Just read the story and find the word.

-1. It was getting dark. She reached up to close the curtains. She just had to go and pick the short straw. Now she would do the washing up alone while her brothers watched TV. As she walked to the kitchen she could tell the soccer game had begun. Spitefully she hoped it would be a tie. 4 letters

-2.The captain fastened the duty roster to the little notice board with a drawing pin. He would let the watch know the vessel would have to change direction if the wind picked up from the south. The sails would need trimming as well. He looked down at the long tear in his weathered jacket. No sewing machine on board. Running repairs it would be then. He began cobbling the fraying edges together with long uneven stitches. 4

-3.He watched as she started to place cards in front of each player. He had managed to close the business transaction just before lunch and now he wanted to relax. If the terms of agreement were not met by his company he would be in a large amount of trouble. He picked up his hand. "Here's hoping I'm a better business man than a poker player." He winced inwardly. 4

-4.The boy finished the cherry and tossed the seed aside. He had not eaten much more than his small fruit allowance all day. The elders had decreed he would set his strength against the strongest of the green tribe. He stared down into the large, deep hole and for the first time he was very, very scared. 3

-5.The doctors had all agreed he was not injured. In fact they had pronounced him to be in very good health. He leant over the side of the boat to test the depth of river bed and hoped this might herald the end of his bad luck. He was sure it would. He might even be able to afford his own small boat. Then he heard it. Just a tiny noise at first. His blood turned to ice. 5

-6.It was a careless mistake. The small piece of paper was still in her pocket and no doubt the guards would find it. They pushed her into the icy courtyard and indicated she should walk in front of them to the rough wooden door. It took all her wits to keep her balance and not lose her footing on the slick black stones. 4

-7.He had not even asked her if the room was to be rented out. It made much more sense to live near the college. Who was he kidding? He did not even know if his parents would allow him to leave home. He threw the tennis ball up in the air as all these thoughts jostled for attention. He watched it hit the net and trickle onto the court. "First service" called the umpire. He really must concentrate on his game. 3

-8.She slowed the car. She would have to steer carefully through these streets as she did not know the neighbourhood. Her father had always praised her ambition and motivation and she hoped he somehow knew how much this moment would mean to her. She must be there. White gates and the name - William Manor. She nosed the car carefully past the guard and headed down the long sealed path to the house. 5

9.He did not want to fight. He did not even want to step into the ring. He knelt in front of the square wooden container and opened it. His gloves were still there but he couldn't do it. Not this time. He ran out of the door. The small evergreen shrubs blocked his path. The dark, glossy green leaves seemed to form a barrier. He pushed past the hedge and hurried home - his heart still hammering in his ears. 3

-10.The sun was still hours away. The line of mountains stretched before him. They were still not safe. They passed the testing ground but the guns were silent at this time of the morning. The vehicle should make it across the open terrain but he did not really know how far it would go before it would need refuelling. That was always going to be their biggest problem. 5

Sometimes lost is where you need to be. Just because you don't know your direction doesn't mean you don't have one.
