Hi, fellow Boomers,
I recently purchased the "boxed" version of this game from Amazon. I was quite surprised with the outstanding graphics of this fun game.
It was released in 2002, and it works very well on my WIN XP machine. The only drawback in playing it is that you MUST finish each level. If you "quit" the game without getting to the next level, when playing the game the next time, you have to play from the very beginning of that level all over again. Other than that, I'm REALLY enjoying the gameplay. Have any of YOU played this game?
BTW, I hope this posting is not being considered to be a "review", but as a "discussion" topic. Happy Gaming!
Sandy

Hi Gerry,
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who has enjoyed playing this fun game. I'm almost halfway through it at this point.

I, too, still have my boxed version and played game when it was first released. I remember having to complete each level before saving, that was frustrating for me. I would certainly recommend the game, if the saving method does not bother you.

Years ago, several GameBoomers played Auryn Quest together and posted about it. I remember that they all seemed to enjoy it despite the save-game restriction. wave

AH! I just thought of a way to continue the game if I want to "quit" in the middle of a level. Usually I shut off my pc at night. If I minimize the game
(alt+tab),I now leave my pc ON, I can continue the next day from where I left off.

wave Hi Sandy,
Yep, it works. That was the way several other people who was playing worked it out. It was a fun game. I was one of the older gameboomers who played it and helped write the walkthrough by fellowship of the quest. It was so much fun playing with the others. Now I probably couldn't make all those jumps. lol
Have fun!

I remember how disappointed people were about the originally planned "Neverending Story" game being scrapped. "The Real Neverending Story" was going to be a much longer game with a more involved story than "Auryn Quest." But apparently the developer ran out of money and started over with the cheaper-to-produce and much shorter "Auryn Quest." I remember someone commenting that "The Real Neverending Story" had been in production for years, while "Auryn Quest" was thrown together in 6 months.

This article is about the originally planned game.

These screenshots are from the originally planned game. Note how they have the date 1999.
Auryn Quest was released in 2002 in the US.

I'm not finding much information about what happened except a small blurb at this trivia site
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Trivia/TheNeverendingStory?from=Trivia.NeverendingStory

Quote:
Vaporware: German game developer Discreet Monsters' The Real Neverending Story, which wasn't really getting anywhere even before Discreet Monsters was felled by the end of a tech bubble. The main personnel involved eventually produced a much less ambitious game, Auryn Quest.

I played Auryn Quest several years ago, maybe 3 or 4 years after it was released and being sold at bargain price ($2 or $3 I think). I remember it being very short -- 2 or 3 hours -- and being more an action/adventure than an adventure, though the action was "easy" compared to most action/adventures. I don't remember any story other than some excuse to move to the next game area -- certainly not as much of a story as your average adventure game. I'm glad I didn't pay any more than I did for it. Even if it hadn't been so short, I don't suppose I'll ever forgive it for being such a diminished game compared to the game it replaced.

It's always sad when a promising adventure game that's in production becomes vaporware. There are probably a lot of other vaporware games that current members of Gameboomers have never heard of:

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Southpeak (developer of Temujin and Dark Side of the Moon) -- you even see a poster advertising it while playing Dark Side of the Moon. Nothing to do with the game of similar name that was published by Dreamcatcher.

"Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury"

and

Jenny,
Thanks for all of those links.I had no idea about the history of this game.As for WHY I bought this game, I think I came across a site that offered a DEMO. So I downloaded the demo, played it, got hooked, and found it reasonably priced as a "Used but good" item on Amazon, and now I'm really enjoying the whole experience.Of course, the "Fellowship" walkthrough helps also. Thanks, KAYC for your part in the making of the walkthrough.

You're welcome, Sandy.

I always find game history interesting, even if it's sort of sad sometimes.

Well, I'm in the last level and so far I've gotten 44 "Auryns" out of 50. It looks like I'm going to do some "back-tracking". I think I missed some of them along the way.I'll have to read the walkthrough more carefully as I try to find the place after I had gotten the 10th one and go forward from there. A very challenging game!

YAY! I finally finished the game after doing a LOT of "back-tracking" to find the remaining "Auryns" one by one. I "died" many times attempting it, but thankfully I was able to keep going due to the last Blue Pulsar (checkpoint).I would not quit until I finally "beat" the game. I would call that an Obsession" on my part. LOL Watching the end scene was well worth playing late into the night.

MOST definitely, Gerry. Now that I know how to "navigate' around all of the "Worlds", I'll enjoy the game experience even more the second time.
